Berk. An island full with vikings that kill dragons, because that's what a viking does. But the viking this story belong to? He was different, he is different.
First of all he is an orphan, losing a parent isn't unusual if you live in the archipelago, but both? That was just tough luck. His father died to a dragon raid before he was born, ''got suprised by that damn nadder, he got'' they told him.
His mother? Nobody even knows what happened. She was a fisher, she had a son so she hung the axe up for a less dangerous profession, and one day when he was six, the ship she went out on didn't make it back. The only thing they found when searching was a tattered sail with Berks symbol on it. An entire ship vanished vanished with only a sail remaining.
Simply bad luck that it was her ship that vanished like that, nothing much else.
They did leave things behind for him to inherit, a bit of saved up money, enough for his first axe, and their house. A bit out of the way of the village, closer to the forest then most of the houses for sure, but that also made it less of a target for the dragons. Why go for the standalone house without anything, when you have and entire village filled with vikings and life stock to choose from?
Of course the other Berkians didn't let him starve they gave him all he needed till he could fend for himself. He had to grow up fast without parents anyway so it wasn't long after his 10th winter that he started learning how to build traps to catch small game.
Then with money his parents left him he bought a bow and a few arrows. He was surprisingly talented with it, he got better at an astonishing pace. It got to the point where he was limited by his bodies strength to draw a heavier bow.
Most more traditional vikings didn't expect much of him. He is different from them he always was. But that was the exact reason why him and Hiccup, the son of Stoic the chief of berk of all people, became good friends fast. Both of them knew that the other and themselves were different, that they are different, and always will be.
And he name of this boy? His parents like many Berkians believed that if you give kids ugly or fearsome names, evil spirits are discouraged from attacking them. They knew he wasn't your typical viking even as a baby so they named him after it and the woods they lived so close to.
They named him Oddlog.
