Chapter 1 - My Old World

I was an ordinary person in my old world. An average Salaryman if you please. I didn't really get my old world. It was just occupied by a bunch of people who only cared about being number one in the world. My culture is greater than your culture, your gods are more barbaric, mine are peacekeepers, Elections are rigged, promises are never kept, wars, betrayal, confusion, etc. At least, that's what it looked like, to me. Perhaps that's why I got so interested in this famous computer game called "World of Empires". It was an epic game. It was full of enemies I could vent my frustration on. Things I could build. People who would do what I asked without question, who would slave away for me, build incredible things, cheats which could create amazing and rare items. And so on. What's more, I was Incharge. It took a while before I could master the game settings and manual. But after that, It was a magical experience. It was like, I was one of the many Kings of yore. A world of few rules. Survive, and live peacefully without too much confusion and red-tape.

Anyhow, coming back to myself, I felt crushed by society. I just took a work from home policy, citing various causes such as wanting to take care of family more and tried to stay at home as much as possible. The result? I got fired. Oh, and for good measure, declared unfit for work anywhere. This made my life even harder. It became more difficult to find a proper job, my folks at home offered very little comfort. Most of the time, I was blamed for my "inefficiencies" in sustaining myself and ultimately got labelled a freeloader. My only comfort was my favourite game: "World of Empires". I turned towards living a shut-in lifestyle. I rarely went out, stretched out in my room most of the time and kept to mostly playing the game. I soon lost track of time and the days.

Once, my parents told me to look after the house as they were planning to go and spend some days with my older sister who had recently become a mother, and needed help with managing her child, as she settled back into her work life. I was more than happy to oblige. Finally, I would get the peace of mind I hoped for. Little did I realise then that this would be the last time I would ever see my parents. And my old world.

After my parents left, I grabbed some junk food from the kitchen, made sure to lock the doors and windows and rushed back to my room, before locking myself in. I took a cold shower, turned on the air conditioner, then my PC, opened a bag of chips, and sat down to play. As the game loaded, I noticed that the network was down and got disappointed. I sat waiting and waiting for the internet to come back online. It was around half an hour. Then an hour. Then another hour. I had finished three bags of chips, and wondered wether the bill for the internet was paid. I looked through my phone and found that it was paid alright. I just couldn't understand it. You pay the bill on time and still they give you a ridiculous network service. You never really got your money's worth at all. In frustration, I grabbed the wifi router and flung it straight at my PC monitor.

And the last thing I saw and felt, was an explosion.
