Cherreads

Chapter 3 - CHAPTER 1 (Part 3)

After walking for minutes, I arrive at the village. Fortunately, they didn't ask for documents or anything to enter; I just walked in. There are no walls, so I don't think this village suffers from monster attacks.

Oh. I see a lot of people with armor, weapons, and several cute girls. Exaggeratedly cute and erotic. Wow. They really like showing skin. I'd feel nervous about such a sight, but I'm so amazed to be in a magical world that I don't have time to feel nervous about it.

The village is huge; there are several food and fruit stalls. There are also stalls selling jewelry and weapons… A typical, clichéd medieval village.

It even smells bad. Do people bathe daily? I doubt it. No offense, but this place seems pretty… wild.

"Do you smell that, Daniel? Clichés of an isekai story… Am I the protagonist or an important secondary character? Maybe I'm just a filler character… I'll find out my role in time."

God sent me, but I won't be egotistical. I always need to be prepared for any surprise, including being a mere filler character.

The village is really pretty and interesting. The people seem friendly. I thought it'd be wilder or more violent, but it's very pleasant.

"Awesome. This place looks really cute," I say as I walk among the people.

Oh. Wow, wow.

I see a sign on a house's door; the writing is very strange, like numbers, but slightly different. It's hard to explain… One of the letters looks like the number 2, but with two small circles in the middle.

Will I have to learn their writing and language? Well, God gave me a great memory; I don't think I'll have trouble learning, at least the basics.

"Even though I can't read, their writing is very different from mine… Will I understand their language…? God didn't tell me anything about that."

I need to get answers.

I focus and listen to various voices around me.

"Sandro? Did he really do that?" a girl said.

"That's incredible!" another girl said, excited.

Girls talking about some Sandro. Yes, I understand the language.

I sigh in relief. I won't have trouble communicating with others. That'll save me a lot of time and effort.

"They speak the same language as me… I guess I need to find people who know how to use magic to teach me."

I hope they don't charge me, and if they do, I'll have to find some work.

Hmm… Where will I find the people I need? I guess asking would help.

I see someone in black armor walking and approach him. He's wearing armor; he must know what I'm looking for.

"Excuse me, do you know where the people who know magic gather?"

"People who know magic? I suppose you want to go to the Adventurers' Guild. It's that place with the blue flag."

Oh, an adventurers' guild. Just what I need.

He points his index finger at the guild. The guild is a four-story building… It looks nice, painted black. It's small, but I guess it's not the main guild in this country.

The man's voice is very deep and sounds a bit strange. Being close to him, I can feel some heat. A real adventurer… Awesome! If I weren't busy, I'd ask for his autograph.

"Thank you very much. I really appreciate it, sir."

I head to the guild… Alright… They speak my language… I won't have communication issues.

"They speak the same language as me, but their writing is different… Why?"

Maybe God has something to do with it. Maybe he gave me the ability to understand the language as if it were my own or something like that.

… Hmm… Something's bothering me.

I can tell a lot of people are looking at me strangely as I walk.

Have they already figured out I'm not from here? Do I look like a tourist?

I'm used to women staring at me, but this is weirder.

"Is something wrong with me?"

I hope I'm not bothering the villagers. The fewer enemies I have, the better.

Alright, I'm standing in front of the guild. Come on, Daniel, don't be afraid. I know you're in an unfamiliar place, but don't worry, you have God on your side. Don't be scared and go in.

I take a deep breath and sigh… Alright… I'm ready.

I enter the guild and look around. More than a guild, it looks like a bar.

There are tables where adventurers eat and drink together. I guess it's also a restaurant.

There are adventurers who look very strong with their huge muscles… Oh… Most of the adventurers turn to look at me and stare with hateful expressions.

Why are they looking at me like that? Do I seem like a bad guy?

Their glares make me nervous… Why do they hate me? They barely know me.

Are they xenophobic and hate me for being different? No, we're not different; we're similar humans. It's impossible for them to know I'm not from this country. Is it my clothes? I doubt it. God gave me these clothes; I don't think he'd give them to me if they'd cause trouble. There must be another reason.

"W-wow, wow. I-I don't think they like me."

I'd better investigate as quickly as possible; I don't want trouble with anyone.

I see a girl sitting at a desk… Oh, she's beautiful. The girl has long red hair and red eyes. She's wearing a red dress and a red ribbon around her neck. Too much red. Next to her are five other women sitting at desks. I think they're guild employees.

This world is very different from mine, and I don't just mean the existence of magic, but also the hair colors.

Now that I notice, the people in this world are very different from those in my world.

I look around and see people with hair in different colors. There are adventurers with white, red, green hair, and so on.

"Am I the only one with black hair?"

That would explain why they hate me. Are people with black hair looked down upon?

I'd better stop thinking about it; I have a more important matter to resolve.

I approach the girl, who I assumed at that moment was a guild employee.

"Excuse me, miss, I'm looking for people who know magic."

My question confused her a bit; I can tell because she stared at me silently for a few seconds, as if analyzing my question.

"Huh…? Who know magic?" she said, looking at me with a confused expression.

Yes, she's definitely confused.

She's staring at me too much with that expression. I feel like an idiot.

I couldn't help but get nervous… Did I say something weird?

"Y-yes, who know magic, please."

"All the adventurers here know how to use magic," she said with a small laugh.

I laugh nervously… Yeah, I figured… I think I look like a fool.

I thought it'd be a clichéd world where few people can use magic.

"Wow, wow… I-I see…"

"Do you want to register, or do you want to hire an adventurer's services?"

Register… I think I need money for that… That's right… I don't have money! I need money to survive… What will I do?

I promised I'd do whatever it takes to fulfill my mission, but I don't know if I'm capable of selling my body to get money.

If the curse of not finding a job persists in this world, I'll have to resort to selling my body to survive.

I hope it doesn't come to that.

"I don't have money to register, but thanks."

I smile at her to show my gratitude. I shouldn't act rude to anyone here. One mistake, and I'm a dead man.

… That expression on her… The girl is looking at me with a blush on her face… Ahhhhhhhh! I forgot the effect I have on women!

"I-if you don't have money, we'll charge you through work, don't worry."

Oh, they're offering me work to pay for the registration.

I think I can accept… Yeah, I'll accept. I need money to survive in this world, and a job wouldn't hurt.

I need to eat to have enough energy to keep going.

"Then I'll register. Thanks."

I hope the registration doesn't require official country documents; I'm an illegal in this country.

"Please, could you tell me what type of magic you have?"

Hmm… A classic question.

Ugh… I don't like lying, and since she has magic, she could probably detect lies. If they find out I'm lying, they won't give me the job… I have to tell the truth.

Besides, I promised my grandma to always tell the truth, and I don't plan on breaking that promise.

"I guess I have all types of magic."

"What?!"

The girl stood up, surprised… Did I say something that weird?

"All types of magic?!" she said, shocked.

All the adventurers are staring at me… Is that rare?

If so, I wonder how rare it is.

"Is it rare to have all types of magic?"

"No one can have all types of magic; it's impossible!"

No one? Wow, wow… God gave me something awesome.

"Impossible?"

"Please, place your hand on this orb!"

There's a crystal orb on the desk… I guess it measures my magical power.

Ugh, I knew lying would be bad. Thanks for teaching me to never lie, Grandma.

They were going to find out my magic types with this orb anyway.

I'm confused but decide to follow her instructions.

"Which hand?"

"Either one, it doesn't matter!"

I place my right hand on the orb.

"Please, wait!"

I'm a rare existence in this world, huh?

Ugh, I suspect that'll bring me problems.

A minute passes, and out of nowhere, a card comes out of the orb, and the girl takes it.

Wow, an orb that creates cards. Does it include my personal info and magical attributes?

"Daniel, huh? What a cute name. Age, 16 years. Magic types…"

The girl's eyes widen. Uwaaaah! That scared me!

Is she exaggerating?!

"All of them?!" she shouted, shocked and scared.

"All of them?!" the adventurers around me shouted afterward.

Everyone's shouting and staring at me. The adventurers' faces changed; before, they looked at me with hate, now they're looking at me with fear.

I don't know if it's good or bad that they're afraid of me, but I guess it's good. I'd rather they fear me than hate me.

"I guess that's good," I said, smiling nervously.

"B-but it's impossible! How can you do that?!"

"Well, what happened is…"

I get a call. God again? Did he forget something?

"What's that sound?" the girl said, confused.

"Excuse me."

I take out my phone, and everyone looks at me strangely… I think phones don't exist here… I'm in a typical magical world without technology… Cliché.

I guess phones don't exist in this world.

I answer and put the phone to my right ear.

"Hello? Is something wrong?"

"You're forbidden from telling anyone what's going on. Make something up, but don't say I sent you, and definitely don't mention the demon that will destroy the world."

Alright, keeping that secret will be pretty easy. I just need to avoid talking about it.

I don't want to lie; my grandma didn't raise a liar. I'll only lie when it's absolutely necessary.

"Alright, don't worry."

I hang up and put my phone in my pocket.

"What was that?" I said, looking into the girl's eyes.

Always looking people in the eyes is something my grandma taught me; it shows confidence, though I feel uncomfortable that she's looking at me with fear.

"What's that?" the girl said, still very confused.

Yeah, they don't exist… I have two theories.

First: In a world with magic, technology can't exist.

Second: It's just a coincidence.

Digging too much into the lack of technology won't help me beyond satisfying my curiosity, so I'll only investigate when I have free time. The main thing is to investigate demons and magic in general… Magic… Ugh, Grandma, what kind of mess did I get myself into?

"It's a phone."

"Phone?"

"I can't say more, sorry. Is the registration done?"

"C-clearly. Welcome to the 'Golden Dragon' guild."

Dragon… Do dragons exist?! I can't wait to meet one. I hope they're friendly and don't try to eat me.

"Thanks. I appreciate it."

She hands me my card.

Hmm… It has strange letters… I can't understand anything, though I admit the design is cute. It has a golden dragon drawn on it.

"M-my name is Grey; if you need anything, don't hesitate to ask."

How kind of her, and I'll take her up on that in the future. I'll need a lot of help later.

Grey… Cute name, but it doesn't match her appearance.

"Thank you very much, Grey. How will I pay for it? What do I need to do exactly?"

"W-when you complete a mission, the registration fee will be deducted from your reward."

Oh, I see, I see. I need to complete a mission to get my reward. I need money, so I should do a mission as soon as possible.

I guess I'll start from the lowest rank and can only take low-rank missions. Easy missions that won't pay much, but you have to start somewhere.

"Thanks."

More people are lining up behind me, so I'd better not waste her time.

I turn around, and everyone's still staring at me… I guess I'll be popular… That's good because it means I'll make friends easily. I need a lot of help.

The more popular I am, the more danger I'll be in, but it'll also bring benefits, like getting contacts to help with my mission and provide information.

Keeping a low profile would be the easiest and least dangerous, but it'd take longer to become powerful and gather information. The best thing is to draw attention and get the information I need as quickly as possible.

"Wow, wow. I'll be popular here."

Ugh, it reminds me of school, though I was only popular with women; the guys hated me.

I sit at an empty table and take out my phone… I have several doubts in my mind. What other functions does my phone have? Also, God didn't give me a charger. How will I charge it?

"How will I charge it?"

Maybe the phone will give me the information I need.

Hmm… Hmm… Yes, I found an app that might help.

While checking my phone, I see an app called "Tutorial."

"Tutorial?"

I open it, and a message appears on the screen.

"Welcome, I'll explain how to use the cellphone. It works as a map, allows you to take photos and videos, and your phone can also function as a weapon with the right spells. It charges with magic; just hold your phone in your hand, and it will absorb some of your magic, charging in just 10 seconds. If you have questions, open the app again."

The app closes, and I sigh… Sounds easy… It didn't answer all my questions, but it's something.

"Alright… What do I do now? I guess I need to learn spells."

I open the app again, and a new message appears.

"What do you want to know?"

Only the message appears, and I try to open the keyboard to type, but it doesn't show up.

It's not the first time I've used a smartphone; Cris used to lend me his for homework. This thing doesn't have a keyboard to type.

"Huh? The keyboard won't open… I guess I have to speak."

If it's asking me something and won't let me type, I suppose it's voice-activated. How modern, though I'd prefer typing; it'd save me a lot of hassle.

I bring my mouth close to the screen to whisper what I want to know.

Ugh, I probably look crazy considering phones don't exist in this world, but I need to resolve my doubts. I'll ignore that feeling of discomfort for now.

"I want to know spells, please."

The message disappears, and another appears. Wow, that was fast.

"You want to know spells, is that correct…? Yes, it's correct."

The message disappears, and another appears.

Oh, it's a long message. I think they're spells.

"The spells I know are: 'Arches Nexus,' it lets you fly. 'Muslar Asio,' it gives you great physical strength, endurance, and incredible agility. And finally, 'Espada Dex,' it summons a great sword, perfect for fights. Those are all I have registered."

… Well… It seems narrated in a simple way with no technicalities. Where are the procedures to cast the spell? Is that really all?

The app closes… Alright… I think I just need to say those words… Sounds easy.

I tried tapping the spells to see if something else would show up, but nothing. Is that really all? Do I just say those words?

It's too advantageous, but considering my enemies will probably be very powerful, this advantage was necessary.

"Wow, wow… Alright, I learned them. I guess I just need to say those words. Now I need to draw attention to get help from powerful adventurers… How will I do that…? I guess I already drew attention when they found out I have all types of magic, but that won't matter if I don't prove I'm strong."

Yeah, that's obvious. Anyone can have great magical power, but they won't be interested in me if I don't show I can use it.

The next part of my plan is to make powerful friends and contacts. The more spells I get, the better.

I drew attention by showing I have all magical attributes, but if I can impress them with something incredible, my name will spread across the country.

Ugh, that'll bring problems too, but I really need contacts if I want to progress as quickly as possible.

Now, alright… How do I draw attention?

Hmm… That'll be tough too.

Ugh… Hmm… What if I wait to be known as the adventurer with all magical attributes? It'll take longer to get the fame I want, but I'll get it eventually.

Ugh, I don't know. I really don't want to waste valuable time.

"Seriously?"

"Fufu. Yeah. Check this out."

I hear two men talking. What caught my attention was the pig's head one of them placed on the table. Gross.

"You defeated an Orc with a knife? That's incredible!"

Orc?

"Thanks, it wasn't a big deal either."

"It's the most incredible thing I've heard!"

The most incredible…? The most incredible…

A great idea hits me. Thanks, gentlemen.

"If I do a really tough mission, I'll draw a lot of attention. They'll consider me very powerful."

Yeah, it sounds like a stupid idea, and it is. But I'd rather take the risk. I don't have much time to improve. I'll take every shortcut possible.

I approach Grey, who just finished helping a girl.

"Excuse me, what's the toughest mission available?"

"The toughest? Well… There's currently a mission to defeat the Black Demon in our village. Any rank can take it."

A demon… Wow, wow… The main enemy has appeared.

"Black Demon?"

… Black Demon… Black… Black armor… Heat… Someone comes to mind.

I don't know why, but I remembered the man in black armor.

"Does he have black armor?"

"Yes."

No doubt about it, it's him.

"But I just saw him. Why hasn't anyone tried to defeat him?"

"He's too powerful; no one dares."

"Wow, wow… I see…"

I think for a moment. I don't know how to fight, but I have to try to defeat him.

Wait… I have great magical power… That means if I use the flying spell, I can fly really fast.

An idea crosses my mind.

I can escape by flying if the demon manages to hurt me.

It's not a great idea, but I have to try something.

Fight and win. Fight and escape. Those are the two possible outcomes this could have.

I'm taking a huge risk, but I feel so much confidence inside. Yeah, I think I know why… God.

God is on my side. The Black Demon treated me kindly. Surely God manipulated the situation and sent me this test to prove how serious I am about this mission. This is one of his tests to confirm I'm willing to kill.

Thanks for this, God. It'll not only help me prove I'm capable of killing if necessary, but it'll also make me famous and earn me money.

"I'll take the mission. Thank you very much."

She's surprised by my words. I guess she didn't expect that.

Well, not even I expected this. Seriously, this could be the best or worst decision of my life. Why do I feel so confident? I don't know, but I'm sure everything will turn out fine. Something inside me is telling me so, and I'll believe it.

"Huh?! A-are you sure about your decision?"

"Yes."

Grey takes a paper from the mission wall. The mission wall is full of papers with mission details.

There's also a board full of them… Wow, wow… So many missions… Are there few adventurers?

Being an adventurer seems like a good job; there are always missions available.

"Give me your card."

I guess she needs it for paperwork or something.

I hand her the card, and she writes some strange symbols on it with a pen.

"Done."

She hands me the card. Why did she do that…? Well, it doesn't matter; I'll ask later.

"Good luck."

Yeah, I need a lot of luck. Ugh, I hope I'm not making a mistake with this.

"Thanks."

I leave the guild and see the Black Demon. Wow, wow. I didn't even have to look for him.

Ugh. I thought he was nice. He doesn't seem like an evil demon.

Was he pretending to be a good person? Well, whatever, it doesn't matter. I have to finish this and prove to God I'm willing to do whatever it takes to fulfill the mission he gave me.

"He seemed kind."

I approach him. Daniel, you're about to get into big trouble. There's no turning back.

I know that perfectly, but I have to do it. God is on my side; I can do this. I just need to believe in myself.

"Excuse me, sir, are you the Black Demon?"

"Yes, I am. Why? Want my autograph?"

I wanted one before, but not now.

"And are you evil?"

"Evil?"

He starts laughing diabolically, and I feel a bit of fear. He's definitely evil.

Well, that evil laugh seems pretty unnecessary. This must definitely be a test from God.

"Of course I am! Why?! Are you trying to defeat me?!"

"I-I guess I have to."

The Black Demon draws his black sword, and everyone flees the area, scared. Is he that dangerous? I'm starting to regret this, but unfortunately, there's no turning back.

"I accept your challenge!!"

Alright… It's time to give it my all.

God trusts me; I won't let him down.

I take a deep breath and sigh.

"Alright… Well… Uh… Wow, wow… How about we settle this outside the village?" I said with a serious look.

Don't show doubt or fear, Daniel. Don't be afraid. You can do this, Daniel… You can.

"Fine by me!"

We start walking, and I look around; people seem interested in our fight because some are following us.

Yeah, I know. Why didn't I train first to make sure I can use my magic? Two reasons. First: I'm very confident… I don't know why, but I feel really confident… I know that's bad, but I can't help feeling confident. Second: I forgot… I literally forgot! I was planning to leave and train, but I made the mistake of challenging him first… There's no turning back now.

I've seen a lot of isekai anime; the first enemies are always the easiest to defeat. If I'm right, I just need to say the spell to use it, so I'm sure I can beat him; I have a good feeling.

I have God on my side.

A bit unfair, but oh well, life isn't fair.

… Life isn't fair… Yeah, I know.

It's not fair at all.

••

Daniel feels so much confidence because he thinks this demon is a test from God, but the reality is completely different.

"What is he doing?! He didn't even train! You're supposed to be smart, Daniel! You did something stupid!"

God was watching Daniel… And he couldn't help him… Yeah, Daniel is an idiot.

Daniel is a smart guy when it comes to academics, but he's pretty naive and doesn't think things through clearly.

"Daniel… Ugh… Why did the Supreme God force me to choose you? This kid turned out to be an idiot. I hope the Supreme God lets me replace him."
