Chapter 2 - chapter 2:The Web of Deceit

As I stood behind the counter, my new boss taught me the basics of operating the system. Having some prior knowledge, I quickly grasped the concepts. He asked if I had experience with virtual games, and I replied honestly that I had. His response was unexpected – he told me I shouldn't play them unless a customer requested it, and I agreed.

My boss offered me a monthly stipend of 20,000 naira, but with a catch – I wouldn't receive any benefits or commissions. As a cashier, I was supposed to earn a percentage from customer winnings, but my boss kept this information from me. Instead, he handed me a paltry 200 naira for transportation, which was insufficient to cover my daily commute.

Every day, my boss assured me that I would soon have the opportunity to earn more by "taking care" of customers. He promised that I would be able to cheat them and make a decent living. His words were laced with deceit, but I had no choice but to hold onto them as a glimmer of hope.

After a week, my boss hired another cashier and transferred me to a new branch closer to my home. I was relieved, as the long commute had taken a toll on me. The new branch was quiet, with some days passing without a single customer. I spent my time sleeping or watching movies on the system, as my boss was unaware of my proficiency with laptops.

Just as I was settling into my new routine, disaster struck. A customer arrived and asked to play a virtual game worth 16,000 naira without paying. He claimed he would transfer the money later and asked me to lend him 100 naira to buy a sim card. While he stepped out to purchase the card, he vanished into thin air. I waited for hours, oblivious to the fact that I had been duped.

As my boss called to inquire about the day's earnings, I was caught off guard. I had to think quickly and come up with a convincing lie to avoid trouble. My heart racing, I prayed that the customer would return before my boss arrived. But fate had other plans – my boss showed up, and I was left facing a difficult situation.

With my boss demanding the money, I tried to stall by telling him that a customer had transferred the funds, but he hadn't received them yet. My boss was skeptical, and I could sense his suspicion growing. As the situation escalated, I realized that my fate hung in the balance.
