Prologue
My life had been a strange one. Well, most of it was actually quite normal at least for your average kid in Dalis. I went to school everyday, I did my homework, played with friends on my days off, attended festivals when they came around. I missed it, I really did. Then, once when I was 13 that all changed. My parents went out on a trip by sea to a foreign nation for business related ventures (we owned a small blacksmith guild which helped us earn our money to pay for our food and home mortgage and so on.)
They said they'd be gone for just 4 days, and then return the next day. But after the specified amount of time had elapsed, I began to get really worried. I imagined the worst possible reasons of why they might not have returned. My fears were unfortunately confirmed as truth- they were dead.
Supposedly, half way into the journey, they were hit by pirates. They stole everything, and then torched the whole ship and killed everyone to get rid of any evidence of their crimes so they wouldn't have been discovered by the Dalician Royal Navy. When I heard this news, I was absolutely furious. I wanted to go track down those responsible for my mom and dad's deaths and give them the slowest, most brutal death possible. But say I did find them, what was I going to do?
I was just a child, they were adults. They would probably beat me to a pulp and pilfer me for every last coin that was on my person. I was also extremely regretful. My dad always owned this one sword he'd found on his travels a long time ago, before I was born. I insisted he bring it along on the business trip but he insisted it was fine. "Don't worry Mikhail my dear boy, I'm just going to be away for a couple of days with mom, and then we'll be back before you know it! We'll be safe and sound when we come back." If I had just snuck it into his sack before he walked out the door that day with mom, maybe they'd still be around. I still remember that warm, loving gentle smile on their faces vividly. It's the last memory I have of them. Every time this memory unconsciously resurfaces, I grit my teeth and tighten my fist and think- "Why!? Why didn't I do anything about it?" Even though I knew there was never anything that I could do about it back then.
Because there was no one to support me, I had to give up most of my life. I couldn't go to school anymore, because who would pay for it? I had nowhere to sleep anymore, since my parents weren't there anymore to pay the bills.
Everything was in ruins from there on out. No one really ever took me in, since in Polam City, my hometown it was every man for himself, everyone only cared for themselves. I avoided the child welfare services as well since I've heard the occasional rumors that Polam's child welfare services were more interested in appealing to the public by pretending like they're doing a good job taking care of unfortunate children just to make money off of donations. But behind the scenes, they barely put in any effort to better the lives of the kids they took in.
Of course, I never actually knew whether or not this was true- but I didn't want to find out. There was a certain point where things started to get pretty bad. I was starving like I never have before, I was sick like a dog. This new experience hit me like a tonne of bricks- it was a whole new world, one I wish I had never experienced. Thankfully, this didn't last forever.
I was on my last legs, stumbling around the streets at midnight, with torn clothes, with a body that was dangerously thin, dark eye bags, and the occasional and loud cough that felt like a thousand knives scraping against my throat. I ran into a man, a wealthy looking man. He said to me "Hey kid… you look like you're having a bad time.. What do you say I take you in? You can work for me, and I'll give you food, clothes and shelter in turn. When you're old enough, I'll start paying you too." He could've been a scout for some underground slave ring trying to draw me in, but at that point I didn't care. I would've done anything to get out of that situation, to no longer be on the verge of death. Ever since then, he's sort of been like a father to me.
I found out that this man was Zantio Slavhar- Guild Master of Slavhar Industrial Guild, or Z.I.G as it was commonly referred to. Z.I.G was a major Guild in Dalis which manufactured magical technology such as magia generators (magia is the magical energy through which magic is casted and technology made possible). They also built magic energy power plants such as the one in the Seafront District of Polam City. They also worked on custom commissions, though those tended to cost a few extra gold pieces. Later on, I befriended a Zalief around my age who went by the name Yuri Borysenko, a blonde boy with short hair, green eyes and long pointed ears like every Zalief, light skin and a sly smile always plastered across his face. We became the best of friends.
Then, 5 years later…
Pure silence. Pure, and unfettered silence dominated my bedroom, the curtains still down, blocking most of the light from outside. My bed was nice and comfortable, it felt like I could just sink into it, falling into its abyss…
"WAKE UP! WAKE UP! DO YOU WANNA EARN THOSE COINS?? WAKE UP!"
The alarm/intercom interrupted the peaceful and quiet aura that was in my room, waking me up as I sprung up in a jolt. This was something that happened every single work day. All worker housing owned by Z.I.G had one of these things installed to beckon its employees to work, or anywhere else they were needed for that matter. I jumped out of bed, and climbed downstairs, and right out the front door. I didn't need to change into my work clothes, since I was already wearing them.
Working at a guild like Z.I.G, you learn that even when you're off the clock, you could be needed at any time of the day, even in the middle of the night, so you'd better be ready to leave at a moment's notice because if you're not, you could risk not getting paid that day or getting fired. For that reason, I developed a habit of wearing my work clothes wherever I went, at any time of the day. This sort of thing was unique to the culture of Polam alone. Anyone else in Dalis would think it's absolutely ridiculous. Sometimes I wished I had a comfier job as Royal Merchant's Guild finances manager in the capital city, Mittendius, after all I did know a thing or two about money. But there's no way they would take me, I wasn't 19 yet which meant I couldn't get a government job. Plus I didn't have the right academic certifications.
It was a shame but I couldn't be too picky since I was already fortunate enough to have survived all those years ago… there were many, many kids in Polam who experienced the same situation as I had but almost none of them were fortunate enough to survive. I took that as a blessing from Cristell. I had finally arrived to the front doors of the guild's operational facility. But just barely. I was panting, and gasping for air. I pulled open the heavy doors of spruce with copper fittings and decorations and head inside. Those doors were absolutely massive… what was the point of having such heavy doors? When I entered, I was greeted by the same sight as usual. Busy workers moving about, left and right. A heavy oily and burning smell permeated the air, one I, or anyone in Polam were used to at this point. Then, a familiar face had suddenly popped out amongst the crowd all the way in the back. It was small but I could instantly make out who it was- Yuri. He was waving over at me, motioning me to come to him.
"So there you are Mikhail~ Didn't think you'd actually show up on time today!"
"Oh come on Yuri.. can you really blame me for wanting to get paid today? You know how last month went.."
"I suppose you're right."
"Uh, anyways, boss man's lookin' for ya, Mikhail. You'd better get up there to his office."
"Oh come on.. what have I done this time..?"
"He didn't say much but.. Apparently it's about some sort of job opportunity. Specifically for you."
"Are you serious? Talk about being cryptic.. well anyways, I guess I'll go see what he's got for me."
I then turned towards the eastern hallway, and headed in that direction to where his office was. My stomach churned- I was quite nervous as to what this was about. Usually when he sent out a cryptic message, it was about something serious. What was it today? Was I finally getting fired? In any case, I knocked on the door.
"Come in."
"I hear you called for me?"
"Of course, of course.. sit down, why don't you."
He spun around in his chair, now facing me with his piercing golden eyes, a small grin was on his face. He was a tall man, with shoulder length slick black hair with orange streaks. His eyes were gold, and his pupils were tiny. On his right cheek he bore a tattoo of a moon and star overlapping. He wore a white vest with gold trims and a light grey zig-zag pattern, the colors blended perfectly. The buttons were made of bluesilver. Under his vest he wore a fancy dark blue tunic and a green tie.
"Well, should we get down to business, Mikh?"
"Nicknaming, seriously? That so does NOT suit you.."
"Oh please Mikhail. Anyways, I've got something super, super interesting for you my boy.."
"Would you get to the point..?"
"If you were just another random employee, I would've fired you for that you know."
"Well, this is what."
He gets up, and goes over to a side room, and shuts the door. Trifling around for some kind of object. After about 17 minutes or so, he returns. He's holding a small wooden box with a keyhole on it which he places down gently on his desk.
"Your job, is to deliver this box to Aurora City. It's urgent that this reaches the city as soon as possible."
"Aurora?? But that's on the opposite side of the kingdom! Also, what's inside of it?"
"My client, whom must not be named has made it absolutely clear that this must get there. And I can't tell you what's inside. It's top secret. Don't bother looking inside, I have a detection spell on that thing so I'll know if you do!"
"This seems suuuuper fishy.."
"I'm sorry Mikhail that's just how it is."
"Well, if that's all- I will be heading out."
I get up and turn around, getting ready to walk out the door and go back to work. He suddenly calls out to me. "Hey Mikhail?"
"Yeah, what's up?"
"I nearly forgot to mention this but, I'll have you take along Yuri on your little trip."
"What? Why?"
"You two working together is a proven formula for success. That's why. Also since your journey is going to be a tough one, you can just go home for today. Same for him. You'll need to conserve as much energy as possible. Use the spare time to pack and prepare ahead of time as well- if you don't you're going to regret it."
"Got it."
After about 30 minutes in his office, I descend the stairwell down to the worker's floor. Like clockwork, Yuri is once again there to greet me. "Look who's finally emerged from the depths! What took you so long, did he get mad at you?"
"Well, what happened is this. He gave me some weird wooden box which I'm supposed to take aaaall the way to Aurora, but he won't tell me what's inside of it. If I look inside I'll get in trouble, supposedly he's got magic over it."
"That sounds.. suspicious.."
"Exactly what I said! Oh, and you have to come along too. Said we'd be a good, efficient duo. We can go home early today, to get prepared for the long journey."
"Aw sweet!"
"But Yuri.."
"Yeah?"
"How much money do you have on you? I've got 19 Silver Coins, 24 Copper Coins, and 2 Gold Coins."
"I've got uh.. 5…
"Huh? 5 of what?"
"5.. Copper Coins.. that's it."
"By Cristell Yuri, what've you been spending your money on??"
"Look, there was a limited item in one of the bakeries in the upper scale districts… I couldn't help it! 3 It WAS 3 Gold Coins but.. It was worth it." I look at him with a dead facial expression. One of disappointment, disgust, and shame.
"Whaaat?"
"You know. You could've had a 3 month long vacation with that sort of cash.."
"Hmph! Don't judge me! I am but a slave to mortal desires~"
"Why did you even ask in the first place, Mikhail?"
"Ah, I mean if we're going on a journey like this, we'll need funds you know."
"Yeah I guess you're right."
That being said, we both wave to each other and head our respective ways. I couldn't believe this. The next chapter in my life was happening! I was finally leaving my hometown Polam! However, while I was overjoyed because of this.. I felt somewhat reluctant to leave.. After all, I've never set a foot outside of my city ever except that one time when I was 10 years old for my baptism- a rite of passage for every Dalician. Also, like my parents all those years ago I was going on a business trip.. what if I met the same grisly end as they have?
I decided to make a quick pit stop at the local chapel to plead to Cristell for her protection, then I continued home. If there was anybody who I felt especially close to, it was Lady Cristell. Then I suppose I had my parents to thank for that. After all, I grew up in an extremely religious household. Then again, everyone in the kingdom adored Lady Cristell.
I climb up the ladder to my bedroom. I survey the room, checking for anything that may be considered adventure-essential. I decided to bring along extra non-work clothes that I never got the chance to wear unfortunately, a leather water canteen with a cryogenic cooling magic applied to it. I bought this about a year ago for 4 Gold Coins from a traveling caravan from the City of Agriculture- Urozhay. Talk about pricey! I packed in a few other things. Finally, I was done! Then I remembered dad's sword. I picked it up and slid it into its sheathe, then attached it to my satchel. I was definitely ready now.
After all… I didn't want to make the same mistake he did. An awkward silence ensued…
Then, my stomach growled. "Yikes, I'm starving.."
I hadn't had the chance to eat breakfast at all this morning since I woke up a bit later than I usually do. I had overtime at work the yesterday, on Monday.. I thought about going out to a tavern, or maybe find some local restaurant in the area but, I decided against it in the end. I was simply not in the mood.
Instead, I ate the cheese and ham baked pastry I got from my local bakery the other day along with some.. illegally imported Imperial coffee. It was illegal because the Empire, specifically the Hromvikese Empire was Dalis' number one foreign enemy. They've tried to invade our kingdom and conquer our lands countless times before, but thankfully we've staved them off. Because of them being our enemies, any imports from said nation were strictly forbidden. Same went for exports.
Any form of positive interaction with the Empire or usage of its products was highly looked down upon. That being said, I couldn't help it. It was so delicious that if I died, and Lady Cristell's divine messengers came down to take me to the afterlife, I wouldn't mind.
I had Zantio to thank for this little… "gift." Since I had no other responsibilities for the day, I spent the rest of it reading. I had a few books I wanted to catch up on.
The day quickly passed, and the skies darkened, night falling once more… the moon was quite beautiful tonight. Maybe because I was happy, happy that my life would change finally. I drifted into a deep sleep..
And the next day quickly came. It was already the second day of the week. Even though today was technically a work day, the intercom system decided not to blast my ears, telling me to go to work. It seems Zantio had tweaked its system for today. I was pretty grateful for that, all things considered. Then I remembered, Yuri and I were supposed to meet in the gate district. I had plenty of time, so I relaxed as I downed a bottle of cold fruit juice, straight from Urozhay. Blueberry juice specifically. It was a specialty of the agricultural city, I made it a ritual to drink at least one each day I had off from work.
"Ahh.. a taste of the heavens above~.."
After basking in the morning atmosphere for a good half hour, It was finally time to head out. The walk there didn't take too long, thankfully. It was no trek, though to say it was a short walk would be going way too far. I saw Yuri there, standing aside two other unfamiliar individuals who seemed to be dressed as soldiers of the Royal Army. One appeared to be a mage, the other a swordmaster. That was the official title, anyway. "Heya Yuri.. how's it going? You ready to head out?"
"Also, who exactly are.. they? These two women I mean."
Then as if on cue, the sword-master turned towards me, and saluted.
"Salutations, I am Agniezska Romanov of the 123rd Dalician Royal Capital Guard, beside me is my subordinate- Tinel Eriksen. She is a licensed mage, and a promising ally."
The sword-master was an adult woman, who looked to be about in her mid 20s. Her hair was bright red and in a ponytail. Her eyes were a beautiful amber tone. She wore a silver breastplate with chainmail underneath, decorated with brass and bluesilver, a steel and brass pauldron, leather combat gloves. A mighty longsword proudly rested on her right hip.
The bespectacled mage wore a flowing dark purple robe adorned with celestial patterns of stars and crescent moons and brass linings. On the upper chest was a red magic stone embedded into the outfit. Her hair was a hazel colored wavy medium bob, about shoulder length. Her staff just sort of floated behind her back. As expected of a magic user.
"Woah! A real mage?"
"Yes, sir that's correct."
Huh… talk about short and concise. She seemed, quiet and not very talkative. For some reason, I expected mageswould be more.. boastful?
Agniezska breaks my deep train of thought.
"Ah, but don't worry about her. She's just reserved is all. She'll warm up to you soon enough."
"You hear that Yuri? Seems you could get married soon enough!"
"Wha- hey!! Mikhail, what're you on about."
"Not a chance."
Ouch. Like a dagger straight into the heart. Poor Yuri.. I kind of felt bad myself, since I put him up to it. I wanted to apologize, but finding the right moment to say anything felt impossible.
"Khh.. I feel hurt, Tinel.."
"Please don't call me by my first name. You barely know me."
She was referring to an every-day cultural concept that existed in Dalis. If you didn't know someone, you'd refer to them by their surname, or sir or miss, or ma'am, etc. only if you were close friends or blood related or in a relationship was it appropriate to call someone by their first name.
"Ahahaha~..."
Romanov tried to defuse the situation, but it didn't really work..
…
"Alright guys ~ should we get going? You do have everything packed up, right?"
We all simultaneously nodded, but didn't say a single word.
"Okay, let's head out!"
We marched on over to the city gates, Romanov conversed with the guards for a few minutes, then we were granted passage.
"Hey Yuri, Yuri! This is it! This is it!"
"This is… what?"
"We're about to leave the city is what! This is awesome!"
"Awesome for a lifelong city dweller that is."
"Wha-" Yuri gave me a smug grin.
"Consider that payback for earlier, for embarrassing me in front of Romanov and Eriksen."
As much as I wanted to get angry, I didn't. I was completely in the wrong back there, and lashing out would be childish. I was 18 years old after all, one year away from adulthood. I'd had better acted like it.
His retaliatory remark was in every way, justified.
"I guess I'll let you have this one, Yuri."
The hard stone bricks under my feet were quick to be replaced with the crunch of soft snow. Before me was no longer a cityscape- rather, a scenery of white stretched as far as I could see. There was the occasional shrubbery and trees, as well as smaller stone hills covered with snow.
When I exhaled, I could see my breath due to the cold. The smell of the salty ocean was still strong in the air. I got that we were somewhat close to the ocean, but it's not like we were directly at the docks…
I figured it was probably amplified from all the magic energy that was being produced by the city's infrastructures.
"Are we really gonna walk all the way to Aurora…? That's gotta be at least, 1-4 months of walking."
"That.. 1-4 months is a pretty big time gap, wouldn't you say, Mr. Borysenko? Also no, we won't be walking there directly one way, that'd be suicide with the type of climate the kingdom has.. not to mention, the monsters."
"A Dalician should know this better than anyone- you told me that when I first came to the mainland from Urozhay, didn't you, Master Romanov?"
"Aha~ you needn't be so tense around me, Tinel. But yeah, that's right. I remember back then when you were still new to the guard. You tried to pick up swordsmanship, but it never really was your style, huh? I guess you were meant to be a mage."
"I-I'm sorry to not have been able to meet up to your standards, Master Romanov…"
"No Tinel! Not at all! I'm glad you chose a different path… truth is, I'm a little jealous of you myself.. I've always been more interested in mysticisms such as magic, and serving in the Church Organization but, I guess life had other plans.."
Romanov and Eriksen seemed to have been deeply immersed in conversation. I had questions about the journey, but butting in during something like this felt like it would be rude quite frankly. So I didn't.
…
"Hey, so uh what exactly is the plan guys? We're going to stop somewhere, I assume? We've been walking for almost an hour…"
"We're going to set up camp a little further ahead to take a rest for the time being.. then we'll continue on. The Holy City Heligsgrad will be our next milestone."
"We should get there in a few days or so, right Tinel?"
"Correct, Master Romanov.."
Since the conversation was about Heligsgrad, I decided to share a thing or two I've heard about the place. I liked to read, and some of the things I liked to read about are the cultures of the world and our kingdom, Dalis since I never had the opportunity to go out and travel.
"Say, did you know, Heligsgrad holds an annual celebration known as the Starlight Festival around this time of year? It's the one day of the year when the sun shines the brightest during the day, and when the stars are all on full display during night."
"Thank you for mentioning that, Mr…Mikhail. You've reminded me- it's actually going to be held in a few days, very, very soon in fact."
"Also, I apologize for using your first name.. I don't know your surname, after all. I hope that's okay."
"Ah, don't worry! Mikhail Olenev, that's my full name. But, you can call me by my first name!"
"N-no, I mustn't, Mr.Olenev!"
"It's fine, really."
"A-alright… then you can call me Tinel…"
"Thanks! Hope we get along!"
She seems to have started opening up to me, even if just a little bit. Then, Yuri chimes in yet again.
"So, can I can I call you by your first name?"
"Absolutely not, Mr. Borysenko."
Sheesh, that was a bit cold. These two really didn't hit it off, did they? I just hoped that one day they would slowly become better friends. After all, seeing people disagree- or fight with one another was a really tragic thing. I didn't like it one bit. We've been walking for hours at this point, and our legs have grown sore. Mine have, at least.
The skies have darkened, the winds have started to howl louder, and the city was far out of view at this point. The moon's glow on the world gave off an eerie, yet somewhat comforting feeling.
"Party, it's time to stop. We're going to camp out here for the night."
Around us was a snowfield, a medium sized forest of spruce trees, and a lake a bit further away.
"Really, Romanov? It's soo cold out hereee…"
"Not to worry, Borysenko. Tinel's got us covered there. After all, she is a mage.." Yuri lifted his eyebrow in confusion, clearly unaware of what she meant.
"You seem confused, Mr. Borysenko. Allow me to demonstrate."
Without further hesitation, Tinel stepped forwards and brandished her staff. She took a deep breath and closed her eyes, staying completely silent and still for a good 3 minutes. All of a sudden, the air around us started to get warmer, and the tip of her staff started to glow. Next, a floating magical fire appeared where she was aiming her staff.
"Woah! So that's magic, huh?"
Despite living in a world where magic was very real, and knowing of its existence- I never actually saw it in person. To me, it was merely one of those things you heard about and nothing more.
"You've never seen magic before, Mikhail?"
"No, of course not! I've never had the opportunity to. That was amazing! Say, could you teach me a little bit?"
Tinel gave a slight smile.
"W-well, maybe if you become officially licensed as a mage… then I will."
"I'd like that, Tinel!"
Romanov suddenly emerges from seemingly nowhere. It gave me a bit of a fright.
"You kids sure are hitting it off~"
"O-oh! M-master Romanov!"
I waved to Romanov casually.
"Oh, Romanov, what's up?"
"Mmm, nothing, nothing.. I'm just glad you're getting along."
"Heeeyy, Borysenko!! Come 'ere! Why don't you join in on the conversation?"
When I looked towards him, he was just sitting on a tree stump, staring off into space, as if he were deep in thought. That, or something was upsetting him.
"Yuuuriiii!! What's wrong?? Cold get to you?"
"Huh? Oh, no it's nothin'!" So he said, but it didn't really seem like nothing. I guess for now, there was not much else I could do except leave him to himself, and let off steam. I felt bad, although it probably had nothing to do with me. Did I fail as a friend?
"Olenev, you mustn't worry. I'm sure you're not to blame.. I'm sure he'll turn out to be just fine!"
Man, how did this woman know what was going through my head? Was she a mind reader? Either way, she seemed to be pretty good with people. What she said did make sense, after all it was the same conclusion which I had come to. With that all said and taken care of, I went to go join Romanov and Tinel once more.
"So, what's going on, Romanov, Tinel?"
Tinel and Romanov were sitting around the fire on two logs which they obtained from a nearby tree. (Romanov cut the tree down with one quick slash from her sword), according to Tinel who seemed to be quite in awe. Romanov just sat there, hands in her lap with an embarrassed.
I got the impression of an experienced and skilled warrior- a deadly force on the battlefield to be reckoned with. No way did I want to get on her bad side! Luckily it didn't seem like that would be happening any time soon. She seemed like a friendly, nice and polite person.
"Man… I'm hungry.."
"Well, Mr. Olenev, it seems you're in luck~ Come, come! We've made grilled fish. It's deliciousss~!"
It really did smell good. My mouth was watering.
"You mean it?"
"Certainly. We've got plenty more coming along anyways."
I was about to bite in when I remembered Yuri. He was probably still down in the dumps about whatever was upsetting him. It wouldn't have been much, but I wanted bring a skewer over to him. It was the thought that counts, right? That was a saying from some foreign land I've heard from my mom when she was still alive anyway.
"Well, uh.. I'm going to bring one to Yuri, cheer him up a bit.."
"That's a kind gesture, Olenev. You've a heart of gold!"
"N-no, Romanov! You shouldn't say that. We barely know each other after all!"
"I've been told several times by my comrades that I'm good at reading people, Olenev. Besides, my instincts do not lie."
"Well, in that case- thanks, Romanov- it means a whole bunch to me."
She spoke not a single word more. Instead she just quietly nodded with a satisfied smile. As if giving her approval. I was beginning to see why she was so respected by Tinel.
"Good luck, Mikhail."
"Thanks, Tinel."
I steeled myself and swallowed. It'll be fine, I thought. We'll make up, for whatever it is, and then everything would be fine. That's how I wanted it to go anyway. I might've potentially ran the risk of losing a friend of several years. I couldn't just let that happen so casually, without a care.
"Hey there… Yuri.."
"Oh, Mikhail.. what's up..?"
"Ah, well I just thought I'd come and check in on you, y'know man?"
"I'm glad you did."
….
"Okay Yuri. I don't wanna pry but you gotta tell me what's going on with you. Ever since we left Polam, you've been acting kind of odd."
"Oh, no it's nothing, really dude! Trust me! Just a little homesick is a-"
"Yuri."
He looks at me with an expression of defeat. He knew his charade wouldn't work.
"Well… I just feel like a burden on this journey.."
"What do you mean?"
"I mean, boss Slavhar called YOU up to his office, he gave you the job, not me… I was essentially told to tag along. Plus, with Romanov and Eriksen.. I feel like you're getting along with them better than I am. I feel.. I dunno, an outsider? A stranger? A.. third wheel.."
"Yuri… I, I'm sorry."
"No, you shouldn't be sorry- I should. I've been acting somewhat childish. There wasn't really anyone to blame except for myself."
"I… I'm sorry for having made you feel that way, Yuri."
"Like I said, you don't have to apologize."
"Speaking of which… is that grilled fish..?"
"Heh. Yeah, you hungry Yuri?"
"You bet!"
Yuri snatched the skewer from my hand, and started biting away, chewing and swallowing, wolfing it down. I looked up to the sky- it was getting dark at this point.. The journey ahead would be a long one, I'd better have gotten some rest..
"It's getting pretty late… Yuri.. I'm back off to the main camp. We've got quite the trek ahead of us tomorrow after all.."
"Right, goodnight."
"Likewise, also be careful. I hear monsters around here can be quite vicious, especially at night."
"Ah, don't worry. You know, not to brag but- back in my hometown! was the strongest guy in town~! Those beasts have got nothing on Yuri Borysenko!"
Yuri pumped his fist, showing off his muscles. Something gave me the feeling that maybe he was a little too confident for his own good. I have quite a bit of knowledge on how people like that usually ended up… I shivered.
"Huh, Mikhail what's up?"
"Ah no it's nothing. Just if you do get into a fight with some monsters, don't try to be a hero alright? Call in Romanov, Tinel and I. We do have a trained kingdom guard AND a real mage on board after all.."
"Don't worry. I know my limits well enough."
Satisfied, I wave and turn around and leave. Romanov and Tinel are already out cold, Romanov snoring.. Tinel was still wearing her helmet. Does she always wear that thing? That can't be healthy, right? In any case, I didn't want to wake them up.
"Here's to a fruitful journey ahead.."
These words escape my mouth as I drift off to sleep in my sleeping bag. I almost miss my bed back in Polam. A part of me missed it. Which I didn't believe..
Hours…
Hours and hours pass…
…
The sun rises once more..
"Hey."
"Hey!"
"Wake up!"
When I open my eyes, I see Romanov and Tinel standing over me.
"Huh… what's up?"
"Mr. Borysenko is already up and ready to hit the road. And so is everyone else. Please get ready, alright Mr.Olenev?"
"Y-yeah, my bad."
I got up and packed up my sleeping bag and affixed dad's sword to the bag once more. I felt up my secondary pouch to make sure the box which I was supposed to deliver to Aurora was still there, which it was. You could never be too careful. For some reason, I felt pretty energetic.
"Alright! I'm ready. Let's go!!!"
"Wow Mikhail.. you sure are.. motivated today?"
"Well yeah Tinel! We're just all the more closer on the next step of your journey!"
"Your positivity is quite respectable, Mr.Olenev.."
"Well, should we get going?"
"I second this. Mr.Olenev, Mr. Borysenko, Tinel, let us be off!"
A few hours into the walk..
"So, the next stop is Heligsgrad, ain't it?"
"Correct, Mr. Borysenko. However, a word of advice- I would recommend you pay attention to."
"You'd best be on your guard in Heligsgrad."
"Why, are there assassins all over the place?"
"No, it is not such a roguish place in which sellswords and mercenaries prowl about. It is the thieves and pickpockets you must peel your eyes for. It is quite a problem there, unfortunately. I've heard tell it's been a recently developing issue."
"I thought that Heligsgrad is the holy city n' all that!?"
"Everywhere has its fare share of problems, Mr.Borysenko. This is a rule you'd best learn well."
When I looked towards Tinel, she's buried in a map. She seemed invested- in scanning it and calculating routes. She had my respect for that. I was never really good at maps. I never had to, after all most of my life I was fixing machinery and building it. I never had to bother with that.
"Hey Tinel, how's the path looking?"
"Well Master Romanov…uh. The Old Mines are up ahead. There's no other route by the way."
Romanov groans in frustration, and grasps her head with her hand.
"You've got to be kidding me.. Ugghh! We should've brought along Miskovic.."
"Why, what's wrong?"
"Well, Mr.Olenev.. Shortly we will be passing through mines which were abandoned because a wild dragon imbued with a celestial shard was discovered within. No one else in this kingdom could stand against them and live to tell the tale.. None else save for those from the Miskovic lineage."
"A-a dragon? Don't those things exist in stories only?"
"No, absolutely not. It is said that the god of Yongheng-Guoji the Land of Immortality is actually a dragon himself."
"How do you know? You've never actually been to Yongheng-Guoji, right? Nobody has ever been able to go there. I'm pretty sure that place is actually a myth!"
"You speak true to some extent Mr.Olenev I've never set foot there. This is something I've merely heard in passing after all."
"In any case! You'd best be prepared when we arrive. Avoiding a Divine Creature like this dragon will prove to be neigh impossible. And not to inspire fear, however we draw near.." I gulped. I grip my dad's sword, ready to draw it. Of course, no monster leaped out at us yet, but I felt anxious. I've never actually fought battles with it though so I didn't know what to expect, even if the situation in which drawing steel was absolutely necessary arose.. "Mikhail, don't worry. I've got your back."
"Thanks. Though I'll try to hold my own as well."
"How about you, Yuri? Ya holdin' up?"
"That dragon won't know what hit it!"
"Yuri.. you might not wanna get too confident… alright? Dragons are no joke after all. At least from what I've heard."
Seemingly not hearing what I heard, Yuri points away far into the distance. "Hey look! That there! Look at them mountains!" They were far away, but the view was absolutely breathtaking. Apparently, this was the Dolaccio Mountain Range. We've been walking for a good 2 days. In a day, we'd reach the Kisha Midlands- a stretch of terrain between the Galacia and Everfrost Region of Dalis. After we got to the Imponerande Mountain Range, we'll have hit our checkpoint- Heligsgrad City.
As we chatter amongst one another, we slowly but surely go further and further down the snowy and rocky terrains… eventually we arrived to a grove of Spruce and Birch trees. Before them were the mountains we've seen from a distance earlier- except now they were a great deal bigger- and more intimidating. "Beyond here, lieth the dragon.. huh?"
"Worry not, Mr.Olenev. For all we know, the dragon may very well be nothing more than a myth."I kind of wished that was true. The caverns beckoned, almost as if they called out to us to draw us inside it. We had no other way to progress further though. The cave was the only option. As we were about to step in, Tinel put an arm up as if to stop us.
"What's wrong, Tinel?"
"What..? Have you not considered that we're going to go through a cave? It's pitch black inside. No torches, no fire, no magelight, nothing. Here, allow me to give my aid.."
Tinel raised up her arms, and focused for a while before beginning to recite something which sounded a little bit like a prayer.. "Oh spirits of this realm, I beckon thee.. Bestow upon us your sight so that we may be able to see through the thick veil of darkness. Shadowpiercer!!"
A magic circle appeared beneath her feet, emanating a golden light, with a gentle humming sound, the light burst into a blinding flash which caused my eyes a slight pain which quickly passed. When it did, I could see much better into the cave, as if I was inside a well-lit building. "I still can't get over it, no matter how many times I experience it. Magic, I mean.. it's highly prevalent in the world yet.. I haven't had many opportunities to see it first-hand.."
"Well, you spent most of your life in Polam, right Yuri? Polam for the most part is industrial."
"Tsk! What're ya talkin' about? Isn't Polam's energy source mostly magic?"
"Yeah, except its just processed, curated and manipulated magic energy. I highly doubt that classifies as actual magic."
"Say, Eriksen. Does it count as magic?"
"Hmm… I- I couldn't say, really."
"Huh ? How come, you're a mage aren't you?"
"I studied mostly offensive-class magic and aid type magic. I never really got into Magidustriology, that was more Seravic's thing.."
"Seravic?"
"Just an old classmate of mine with whom I became somewhat acquainted for a time during my days studying magecraft. I never saw her after graduation."
"Tinel, which school did you go to?"
"One of the greatest in the entire world- Mittendius Royal Academy of Magic."
"Wow! That must be the best one in Dalis, huh?!"
"It's the only one. Magical Institutes are quite costly to run. Our nation can only afford the MRAC, and nothing more. Now, let's get going, this light spell only lasts for an hour, and has a 2 hour cool down."
Great. It looks like the conversation could only have been stalled so far.. no! What was I thinking? This was pathetic! I. Was. Better. Than, this! I gripped my dad's sword once more to calm my nerves, and then started to march on in. We've been walking for several minutes now, but we've happened upon not even a single monster.
"Huh, that sure is strange.."
"What is, Mr.Borysenko?"
"Romanov! Well, it's just that, this cave is supposed to be home to a ferocious dragon, right? If a beastie of that magnitude is livin' in ere', I'm surprised there aren't any smaller grunts ya'know..?"
"You bring up a most curious point. Aye, this is strange indeed at a first glance.. though if this is a dragon enchanted by a celestial shard's power.. it would only stand to reason that such power inspires fear in the hearts of lesser monster-folk.."
"Say, Romanov- just how powerful ARE celestial shards- what are they anyways?"
"well, since this is information the World Church wishes to hide from the people of this realm, my knowledge is quite limited.. it goes that celestial shards, as they're called are mysterious relics from heavenly realms even beyond the reach of the divine which fall down to the earth under circumstances unknown. Whichever living being they touch first is imbued with an awesome power, but one that drives them mad as a price for it."
"And you're tellin' me we're about to fight a dragon that's got one o' those stuck in em? No thanks! Dragons are pretty strong even without a celestial whatchamacallit! We ain't standin' a chance!"
"Like it or not Yuri.. there's no other way around it. If we want to make our way to Heligsgrad, this cave is the only way to the city."
"I guess I have no other choice but to accept my fate.. It's been nice knowin' ya, Mikhail! What a pathetic life I've lived!"
"Calm yourself Yuri, we haven't even seen this rumored dragon yet."
Despite my rationalization of the chances this dragon actually existed, I personally believed it did. I wanted to, at least. I've almost never left my home city so I didn't know much about the country I lived in, much less the world I lived in. If I spent my entire life living within the confined walls of Polam, and never once ventured out, I'd hate myself. I would never forgive myself.. for living so pathetically. I stop in my tracks.
"Hey guys.."
"Once this whole Aurora thing is over.. I wanna travel the world."
"Hm? Mikhail, what's this dude?"
"It's been on my mind a lot lately. This whole job Zantio's given me.. It made me realize just how small my world up until just recently. I don't wanna live and die having done absolutely nothing with my time in this world.."
"Now, dare I say it- this is quite rare.."
"What do you mean, Romanov?"
"You know well and good how most Dalicians never leave the kingdom in their entire lifetime- they feel no need to. This land is their home,it's where their entire life is. Their families, the ones they love, their jobs, their homes, their memories.. to a Dalician, that is everything. Something they hold dear- perhaps a bit too much."
"It restricts them- makes them close minded, theyworry what will happen if they leave, always making the worst assumptions. Part of that is in truth a fault of the Integrehelnist teachings.. I as a member of the Royal Capital Guard shouldn't be speaking so lowly of the State Church, however it bears heavily on my mind. From time to time."
"..."
"Err… Romanov.. we aren't going to get executed by the World Church for you saying that… right?"
"It is fine, Mr.Borysenko. As long as we've not been heard by a Churchman or overly zealous follower, we should be fine."
"Everyone, look at this." Tinel called out to us, interrupting the conversation midway. She was pointing towards the wall in front of us. No, not a wall.. Upon closer inspection it seemed to be more of a stone gateway. It was engraved with patterns I've never seen before. It depicted warriors of an ancient time all banded together fighting against something. Looking up higher on the engravement, it appeared to be some sort of giant and ferocious lizard like monster with three heads and huge intimidating wings, their jaws were wide open, with a mysterious energy gathering inside of each of their jaws. Beneath the battle scene was a caption, though it was nothing I've ever seen before. I ventured out to guess it was some kind of ancient language lost to time. It read: ⍆⇼⇭⥸➳⇯⥝⇭⇪⥦⥦⍇⇍⍇⥸↡⍇⥅⍇⇍⇼⍆⤒⇼⇍⥸⥅⇼.
"Goodness me! That's quite the scene there isn't it!?"
"Who y'think left this here?"
"Have you not learned anything in school Borysenko..? Judging by the runes down here alone, you can immediately tell this is the ancient Haelstriche Tribe. Well.. anyways, I'm going to note this down real quick.. I've a friend in Dremvaqua who knows a thing or two about Haelstrichean runes… it's her obsession, and quite frankly I'm curious myself."
"I've a more important concern- party."
"Surely this here mural has been engraved for a reason.."
"What do ya' mean?"
"Borysenko… I think this is meant to be a regalement of the ancient peoples' battle with this dragon. You see, the Haelstriche Tribesfolk had a tradition of recording major events after they've happened. Perhaps as a way to let the people of the future learn of the past.."
"Wouldn't that mean.. the dragon's real?" This time, Romanov did not say a single word- rather she just nodded in confirmation. Confirming that which Yuri feared..
"Hey uh.. Romanov..?"
"Yes, Olenev? What troubles you? The dragon, perhaps?"
"No.. I'm not really scared, or at least I'm trying not to be. I'm more so confused. This dragon is imbued with a celestial shard, right? If that's the case.. then how come it isn't mentioned here?"
"Very observative of you The reason for this is the descension of the celestial shard was not something that happened much, much later.. how far apart the first battle with this dragon and the fall of the shard are though, I would not be able to say.. I'd guess though it had been around a century or more.."
"W-w-well guys, c-c-come on! Let's teach this dragon a lesson and get a move on!"
"Not so fast, Mr.Borysenko."
"Oh Tinel, what is the issue?"
"Not much Master Romanov.. It's just that I detected a magic seal placed upon the doorway.. it seems like like getting through will be a challenge and a half.. Not to worry though, I could probably crack it in an hour, give or take?"
"An hour?"
"Hey this is a heavily layered seal, and level 94 magic at that! Decoding the formula which lays the foundation for the spell is going to be a challenge in andof itself, so give me time!"
"I haven't any idea what half of those terms you just said mean.."
"Which is why I would like you to settle down, and let me do my job. Please."
I kind of felt bad. For rushing her to do her job.. but how was I supposed to apologize for that? The aura between us seemed strange now.. thanks to me. I wasn't sure what to say.. talk about awkward..
Everyone is silent for what seems like forever… perhaps it felt like "forever" because my mind was still lingering on the unfortunate exchange between Tinel and I… I shake my head. Come on, this isn't me! I was just over thinking things, that's all. I mean sure I did say something insensitive.. but it was just that- a misunderstanding. I'm sure she wasn't mad at me. Then I hear an almost ethereal humming sound- and then the snap of chains.
"What was that?!"
"I finally removed.. the seal.."
"Hey Tinel! You're all tuckered out! What's wrong?"
"Oh don't worry.. It's just this is by far the most complicated seal I've ever seen… it took a loooot of mana out of me to remove it.. I'll need to… recharge.."
Tinel goes over to sit down against the walls, but then stumbles over and passes out.
"Do not worry, Mr. Olenev.. she is in no critical condition, she'll be fine."
"I'm more concerned about her physical health.. Leaning against a stonewall like that cannot be good for your back.. it's not even a flat wall.."
"That is.. a good point.. I suppose I should do something about that.. might you lift her temporarily for me?"
Reluctantly, I do so. I could feel her skin against mine as I held up her limp body.. warmth still radiating from it. Part of me wanted to remove her mask.. see what her face looked like. No, that's just creepy. I watched Romanov unpack her sleeping bag and roll it out on the ground..
"Mr. Olenev, you may lay her down. Carefully now."
"R-right!"
Romanov dusts herself off and lets out a sigh of relief.
"Phew.. now that that is done.. We may finally ventureforth, to put an end to this beast. If he is truly not just a myth invented by the ancient people."
"Hey uh… do you see Yuri around?"
"Oh no.. has he run off? Into the chamber of the dragon..?"
We look into the room beyond the now opened doors..but it seems empty. Nothing and noone inside. But how, he wasnowhere to be seen ! It's like he vanished without a trace..
"It pains me to say this, Mr. Olenev.. but we must secure the path to Heligsgrad first. We can deal with Mr. Borysenko later. This mission is of the utmost importance."
I didn't really like what she said, but our situation right now was less than ideal.. protesting further would've only made it worse. So I decided to go along with it. Ready for anything, we draw our swords, ready for anything. We step in..
FWOOSH!
A blue light starts glowing, emanating from nowhere..It envelops us and everything around us until everything has been swallowed by a blinding light… when the light clears and everything is visible again, we're in an entirely different place. A spacious room made entirely of ice.. or some blue crystals that looked similar to ice, I couldn't really tell. When I looked behind us, the door wasn't there.
"W-where in Cristell's name are we?"
"O' Olenev.. I think you'd do best to find issue with what is in front of us."
"What are you talking about-" When I looked in front of me, I gasped quietly.. in front of me was a dragon. It was about as big as a house, had 3 heads, and faded light blue scales which looked as hard as stone. It was curled up kind of like in a ball, presumably sleeping- not moving at all. The central head had something that looked like a piece of shattered glass lodged into it, I assumed this was the celestial shard. Though, it looked kind of… dim? That is to say, for a magic shard, what I saw was not what I was expecting. I thought it would be glowing, or something.
"So, that's the dragon then..?"
"Yes, it would seem so. However we'd best tread carefully..we do not want to risk waking it from its slumber… best to find Yuri, and get out of here if possible while avoiding conflict."
"But.. how? I don't see a door anywhere.."
"There is always a way, Mr. Olenev.."
"Well, this room isn't too big.. so if Yuri is in here, finding him'll be a cinch. At least, it should be."
I draw my sword, ready just in case the dragon woke up and decided to attack. In retrospect, fighting this thing off and getting out unscathed, or alive, even was somethingthat didn't seem very likely. I was scared. But having the sword unsheathed gave me a sense of confidence and courage to push on. Made me feel powerful, even if I wasn't.
…
I trip on an uneven tile that was sticking out of the ground, and fell down with a thud.
Shit.
That was surely enough to wake the thing up, right?? Unfortunately, I would get my answer soon enough. The dim room lit up, the dragon's scales brightened, its eyes opened. The central head's eyes were a golden yellow, with black slits, with an almost hypnotic aura emanating from them. The one on the left had dark purple, abyssal looking eyes, the one on the right had green, fierce looking eyes which inspired fear, simply looking into them made my heart race so fast it felt like it would burst, and my knees shook uncontrollably. Despite that, I couldn't move. The shard jabbed into its head started flowing with a golden light.
When it unfurled its wings and arched all 3 of its heads back, a complexmagic circle appeared beneath it, a powerful gust of wind started blowing from the circle, a deafening screech coming from the magic, it was most likely charging up. I still can't move. Man.. what a pathetic end.. then all of a sudden,a scorching hot purple blast of fire shot towards me.
!!!
What, was that? I was.. Pushed out of the way..? No, more like "tackled".. It was Romanov!
She was on the ground, all beaten up having just taken a heavy fall.."Romanov..! Are you alright?!"
"W-well.. I did take quite the tumble.. But as a humble soldier of the kingdom, this is nothing! On my very honor, I swear to slay this beast!"
"I can't leave you hanging here, fighting alone!"
"You ready?"
"On the count of 1.."
"2"
We angle our blades, and aim them at the dragon, which was charging up for another blast.. and then simultaneously we both shout-
"GO!"
The dragon which seemed so proud in its magic, abandoned casting the spell, and lunged towards us.
It raised its arm high up into the sky, its claws extended and began emanating with an aura of fire. It swings down its arm on me to squash me like a bug. I quickly swing up my sword to block the attack,I couldn't cut off its arm though as it was covered by scales which were hard as steel.. it was stronger, pushing down on me while glaring at me with all 6 eyes. It increased its strength more, and more...I was starting to feel it. My arms were getting sore, and they started shaking, as if they were about to go limp or fall off..I wanted to drop my stance so bad.
But I knew that if I did, I wouldn't make it out of here.. I continued to hold on, and push back, despite the immense pain in my arms, and my hands' sweatiness and unbearable itch. Somehow, I managed to push its arm back and counter the attack.. it felt like my arms would fall off. The dragon was preparing for another attack already when Romanov jumped towards the dragon, as if she flew directly towards it, and struck it in the back from an angle with one swift yet mighty strike. She shoved her blade deep inside, blood splattered all over the stab wound.
When it noticed her, it gave up on attacking me, and went for her. It curled its tail, and flung it at her. If she got hit with that thing, it could snap her in half.. if she was lucky, it would just break her back.. luckily, she managed to dislodge the sword in time, step off to the side, and with one big clean cut...
SHWING!
She cuts it off the tip of the tail with ease, stunting its motion for a little, the severed part falling to the floor with a loud thud. Its flesh is bright red and moist looking.. then the its tail started to twitch and bubble... a new tail regenerated! How?
WHAM.
It headbutts Romanov, right in the stomach with its central head. Romanov is sent flying backwards- crashing into the wall. That was either fatal or broke her ribcage.. hopefully it was the latter. Gahh... that sounded terrible, didn't it? Wait, why was I caught up with that now???
It turned towards me.. the head on the left opened its jaws wide.. a green aura started converging in its mouth. Building up a spell that would surely finish me off. I was exhausted, I was on the ground, and had no strength toget up. I was no mage like Tinel either. I couldn't create a shield to protect me from the spell. Was this where I died?I simply couldn't and wouldn't stand for it! But what was I going to do? I was just some average nobody. What a trulyfoolish end..
"Yuri, Tinel, Romanov, everyone... it's been nice knowing you.. goodbye."
And all that I could do now.. is wait for the sweet embrace of death. Zantio, sorry I failed.
...
Wait a second...
I can't go out like THIS! What was I thinking? I couldn't forgive myself in the afterlife if this is how I went out ! I wanted to LIVE. I wanted to SURVIVE. Even if it meant doing the impossible.. yes, to survive at any cost.. that was my goal right now..
The dragon finished charging up, and was about to let loose its mythical fury... but I wasn't concerned about that.I wasn't scared, and I wasn't frantic anymore. An overwhelming sense of cool and calm took over my mind. Thenall of a sudden, it was as if time had stopped. Everything was lining up. Everything made sense. It was clear whatI had to do to escape this peril.
I gripped my sword, and dropped into a stance.
"My soul is soothed."
"My mind, all-knowing.."
"My vessel.. immortal."
The blade of my sword overflowed with a golden/white light. For some reason, I just knew what to do next. I gripped the handle as if I were about to unsheathe it..
"AVALOS!"
I spring forth at the speed of light. I draw my blade ready for impact, I aim and then strike.I aim for all 3 heads, ready to strike. Before I know it though, I've successfully liberated thedragon's heads from its body. I flop down hard on the cold ground. I must've not realized whatI was doing, because I was shocked when I looked back at the corpse of the beast.. "H-huh? What killed it? R-romanov? Was it you?"
"No, it couldn't have been.."
"Was it.. me?"
I decided not to think about it too much. After all, I was feeling all sorts of things right now. Anxiety, adrenaline rush, confusion.. "Haah..." "Now, how will we get out of here...?"
As if to answer my question, the room faded away, leaving the same scenery before we got warped into that strange room with the dragon. The doors which bore the engraved murals of the battle scene with the dragon once again came into view.. only this time, they were opened. "Mikhail? Master Romanov? There you are! What happened?"
Tinel was wide awake. When Romanov and I were transported back to where we initially were,I saw her standing, looking at the doors as if we might walk through them at any second. She seemed worried..fiddling about with a small rock she probably picked up somewhere in the caves earlier."Tinel! It's good to see you again.. when we walked through the doors, we were warpedaway to some other room... that's where we encountered the dragon, and as you can see..we got out."
"Warped, eh? So a teleportation spell! You don't see those often. I especially wasn't expecting to see one here in this ancient cave..."
"Are teleportation spells a newer type of magic?"
"I'm not quite sure, actually." "You're not sure?"
"Spatial magic has never really been my forte back in the Mittendius Royal Academy of Magic."
"You're a healer as well as a mage, right Tinel? Is Romanov going to be okay?"
"Well, I'm working on getting her to regain consciousness.."
"Aaand... there we go!"
Romanov slowly opens her eyes, sitting up.
"Mr. Olenev, Tinel.. where am I? W-what happened with that dragon?"
"Everything's been taken care of, Master Romanov. We're safe now."
I looked around the room, for a sign of Yuri. But he was nowhere to be found. I assumed he would magically appear back once we escaped the dragon's chamber, but no. "Where's Yuri? Did you see him, Tinel?"
"Sorry, but no. When I woke up, he just wasn't there at all. I'm guessing he wasn't with you and Master Romanov either, then?"
"Nope."
"I'm really worried, Tinel.."
"Mr. Olenev, you shouldn't worry. It's possible that once we were freed from the dragon's domain, Mr. Borysenko was also dropped somewhere else.. say, outside the caverns, perhaps?"
"Waah! R-Romanov! You scared me there! You sure woke up fast..."
"It's a necessary skill, as a soldier."
I didn't like Romanov's idea, about leaving the caverns, and just keeping an eye out for Yuri.. what if we missed him, and left him here to die..? Well, I highly doubted that would actually happen. This was just me overthinking it, right? After all, I barely escaped a situation where I could've died! Naturally my mind would still be racing... plus, Romanov seemed like an intelligent and learned individual. I could trust her.
"Well.. alright Romanov.. I guess I'll go along.."
"You seem unsure, Mikhail. Are you worried about him?"
"How'd you know?"
"Haha~ I can read you like a book, Mikhail!"
"No... am I THAT predictable?"
"I'm kidding, I'm kidding... it's only, people are quite.. transparent? When they're anxious, or worried, or scared... they don't think about what they're showing on their faces.."
"Oh."
"It's not a bad thing to let your emotions show, Mikhail."
"Right.."
"What's the hold up you two? Come on, let's get going!"
"Sorry, master Romanov!"
She motions to me.
"Come on, Mikhail, we need to move!"
I kind of stumble at first, feeling slightly dizzy with a bit of head pain, but I manage to start walking.. we headed straight through the doors that originally teleported Romanov and I. I had brought up the concern about the same magic being activated again, but after searching for any hidden spells nearby, Tinel assured us no magic was lingering about anymore. And she was right, we passed through the doors, however instead of being enveloped in a flash of light and waking up in some room with a dragon in it, we just passed through some more caves, going deeper and deeper until I could start to feel the cold air, biting my cheeks..
"Hey that's the outside!"
"At last.. I was beginning to grow weary of these caves..."
When we stepped out, the same grey skies and chilly atmosphere we were used to greeted us. Actually, "chilly" might've been an understatement. I sigh in relief, and stretch. I honestly never thought I'd see the light of day again. This was something I'd never forget.
"Aaah finally.. outside!"
"You sure seem relaxed Mikhail.."
"Hmm? Well, sure I am. Being stuck in a cave is pretty scary you know! Even more so if I might potentially be killed by a dragon!"
"That's not quite what I meant though... I was talking about Yuri. Are you not worried for his well-being?"
"Huh ? Oh, of course I am! He's my best friend after a-"
In the middle of my sentence, I was cut off by a loud cry of pain. Whatever it was, it didn't sound good, at all. When I looked to see who it was, my face went pale. It was Yuri. My best friend, Yuri. "Hey, Tinel! Yuri's over herebleeding out! We gotta help him!"
"Huh? Oh no! I'm getting right to him! Also, Master Romanov gother share of pain in the encounter with the dragon, I'm guessing..keep an eye on her! I noticed her limping a bit.."
"But I don't know medicine ! Or healing either.."
"Just give me a shout if anything goes awry. I'll get it under control, okay?"
"R-right.."
Tinel goes to tend to Yuri. Looking at his wounds, what I saw didn't look pretty, at all. There was a wide gash around his hip/abdomen area.. it was pure red, flesh and blood both visible. How he was going to survive that I didn't know. I wanted to trust Tinel, however.
"The situation seems extremely dire now.. doesn't it..?"
"Some way to start a conversation."
"I.. apologize, Mr. Olenev. I did not mean to offend...I just meant to say that.. despite it not seeming so.. things will get better.."
"I also understand what I said sounded entirely different.."
"On the bright side! Tinel is an absolutely amazing healer. She's pulled many a men from the brink of death before."
"That's reassuring. Thanks."
"Also, once we arrive in Heligsgrad... we shall have proper room and board... and food~! We'll get to experience the Starlight Festival as well. So in other words, if you hold out just a while longer... it'll be worth it!"
"I've a friend in Heligsgrad... Abbadiese, Abbadiese Kravinskyy. We go back ever since we were young girls. She will surely have a place for us to stay.
"That sounds aweso-"
"HNRGHH!"
"Mr. Olenev??? What's wrong with you?? Tinel, over here!"
For some reason, my stomach felt like I was about to have the worst throw up of my life, and someone giving me the hardest kick in the gut possible all in one, I keeled over and fell down to the ground.
