From the comfort of my room I starred at the night light through my window, the city's radiant night life shinning so bright, reminding me of when I was little, and mom would take me out to have dinner, telling me that as soon as we were done with dinner we would go back home immediately. but somehow we would stay outside for hours maybe trying different restaurant, getting some ice cream, going to the amusement park. Thinking about it made me smile ,I enjoyed the night life in a way I couldn't even describe. It was just so different , so radiant, so bubbly.
The smell of dinner, coming from downstairs drew me out of my thoughts.
Aunt Katherine came back sometime in the afternoon with a lot of food items, she planned to make pasta and chicken, my favorite." Regina come help me set the table" Aunt Kath called. Just then a small knock came from outside my door, as the door flew open. I knew it was Regina she was the only one that Knocked and opened a door without waiting for a response.
"Dinner will be ready shortly, so get your ass down in Ten minutes Regina said not allowing me to say anything and immediately leaving, closing the door behind her.
"I smiled shaking my head, "Classic Regina". I felt my phone vibrate, picking it up, and opening it, the first thing I saw quickly caught my attention, it was the same handsome guy I saw on the front cover of the tabloids at the hospital. According to the news he was right here in the city, "wow just a day ago it read that he was in Vegas and now he's here," And he got arrested." I didn't have the strength for all this, the smell of the pasta down stairs, called out to me, I tossed my phone on the bed before heading down stairs.
I was about descending the stairs and I could here whispers coming from the dinning area , I silently made my way downstairs, seeing aunt kath and Regina trying to talk as softly as possible.....but why? The look on their face made it obvious that something wasn't right, and them whispering meant they didn't want me knowing. what were they hiding. Just then Regina saw me standing at the stairs , giving Aunt kath a nudge to let her know I was behind her.
Aunt Kath turned to smile at me, I could see that her smile tried to cover her real expression, What wasn't she telling me. "What's wrong ?? I asked, but they didn't say anything ,trying to avoid my gaze.
"Let's have dinner first ,shall we." Aunt Kath said, motioning to the dinning table, she pulled my chair out for me, as I sat down I couldn't help but notice the frantic expression on her face, no matter how hard she tried to hide it , it was just so obvious that something was wrong.
Aunt Kath took a seat, saying a short prayer, before we started eating. The air in the atmosphere was so tight and weird. I couldn't take it any more." Can someone please tell me what's going on?? I snapped.
Aunt Kath and Regina shared a look and I knew they weren't telling me something.
"What?" I demanded. "What is it?"
"Its about your mom Emily, Aunt Kath said. things aren't looking so good".
"I blinked. What??, What do you mean,?? did something happen to Mom ?What's that suppose to mean?? I could feel my heart thumping against my rib cage, the thought of something happening to mom, made my heart beat so fast. I could sense bad news coming. Finally aunt Kath turned to me. "We can't afford her medical bills, and I don't know how long I can keep her in the hospital. We have a lot of bills to cover and with the looks of it we might loose the house." Aunt Kath said.
"What,? It seemed so unreal, I never thought we could find ourselves in this type of situation, we had no money, bills to pay, Mom's hospital fees and we could even loose the house.?? All these things all at once were do I even start. At that moment all I could see was my mom's pale face on the hospital bed. What was I going too do??!
" Emily". Regina called out." Calm down, we're gonna think of something, so breathe, I also started looking for part time jobs I could take, so far non turned up, but My friend got me a gig at the Saphara fashion show this Friday, and the pay is really good. So that's a start, try not to loose hope and overthink we're gonna get through this together.
"How?? I thought we had enough savings to cover for it. I said." No baby we don't, turns out your mom has been sick for more than a year and she had being using the savings to go to the hospital for regular check ups, I'm sure she didn't think it would be this serious that's why she went for little treatment, she must have thought that taking treatment at the early stage, would make it go away quickly, and it was suppose to go that way, but.....for some reason it just didn't work out that way.
I have been using the money I have to keep her in the hospital, and I'm almost out, ....I'm broke. The bakery hasn't been doing so well, It's being struggling for more than a year now and there are debts too, if they aren't covered we might loose the house.
" I was shocked, I didn't know things had gone this bad. "Why didn't you tell me? I looked at aunt kath. "Why didn't anyone tell me"?? Regina looked away.
"No there has to be something we can do....right? I turned looking at aunt kath. But she only shook her head.
"There has to be, I could get a a job, I turned looking at Eliora. "You know the one at Saphara. I said. And if I got it I could even ask for an advance to cover the bills.
"No Emily," Aunt Kath said." the hospital bills are coming soon, too soon, I spoke to the doctor .we have less than three weeks."
I'm sure we would think of something, I was thinking of a way to tell you, the news of your mom was already a shock, I didn't want to scare. So don't worry I'd think of something.
I nodded....."I guess I really need to land that Job" I thought.
