Chapter 4 - The Road to Valeborne

The sound of hooves echoed through the cobbled roads of the bustling town of Arelis, the wind cutting through the trees and carrying with it the faint scent of the sea. Kieran stood at the outskirts of the town, gazing at the distant city of Valeborne. It was a city that stood as both a beacon of power and a hub for the greatest mages of the age. He had always known about it, but now he was standing before its towering gates.

The Academy Exam was only a few days away.

"Are you sure about this, Kieran?" his voice—a young, unfamiliar one—rang out in the cool morning air. His words, though simple, were laced with the same uncertainty that had clouded his thoughts since his transmigration. Was this really where he was meant to be? Could he truly succeed in a world where his true identity remained hidden?

The wind whispered its reply as it tousled his hair, and Kieran straightened, his hand instinctively going to the mana stone that rested at his side. The familiar cool hum of energy thrummed through his fingertips, reminding him of his newfound power.

In this new body, Kieran was no longer the person he had been before his transmigration—he wasn't even sure what he had been before. His memories were fragmented, broken pieces of someone else's life. But one thing was clear: he now had the ability to shape the future, his future, in a way he could never have imagined. His system would guide him, but the decisions, the direction, lay in his hands.

The Academy Exam was more than a mere test—it was the first step in establishing his future in this world.

The Path to the Academy

The journey from Arelis to Valeborne was a well-trodden path for most students, but for Kieran, it was a pilgrimage into the unknown. His footsteps carried him through fields dotted with wildflowers and along rivers that sparkled under the sun's touch. For the first time since his arrival, Kieran allowed himself a moment to simply observe the world around him—the Aetheryn countryside, with its vibrant greenery and soaring cliffs, felt peaceful, untouched by the weight of the complex politics and magic that resided within the city.

Yet, he knew that peace was fleeting.

The road soon grew busier as the gates of Valeborne appeared on the horizon. He wasn't alone in his journey. Several other young men and women, most likely candidates for the Academy Exam, were walking the same path. They spoke in low voices, their expressions determined and yet somewhat anxious. The air was thick with the anticipation of what awaited them.

Some of them wore expensive robes embroidered with the insignia of their noble houses, while others, like Kieran, wore simpler clothing—cloaks, tunics, and sturdy boots meant for travel. Kieran's attire was a mix of what he had gathered during his time in the small town. His clothes, though simple, were functional. They were made of dye-stained fabric, hand-stitched by a local tailor, but the care in their making was evident.

The closer he got to the gates, the more he could feel the magic in the air, heavy and thick like a storm cloud on the verge of breaking. Valeborne was home to hundreds, if not thousands, of mages, each one connected to a different aspect of the world's magic. The Academy, towering behind the massive walls of the city, was an institution that had witnessed centuries of history unfold.

It was here that the next generation of powerful mages would be forged.

Valeborne's Gates: First Impressions

Kieran arrived at the city gates just as the sun began to dip below the horizon. The city of Valeborne came alive in the evening light, its silhouette etched against the sprawling sky. Tall spires and the silhouettes of ancient towers filled the horizon as the golden light illuminated the grand marble walls that encased the city.

As he approached the gates, the sounds of merchants hawking their goods and children playing in the streets became more pronounced. Valeborne, despite its aura of power, was a vibrant city, bustling with life.

Guards stood at attention, their gaze sharp and assessing as the new candidates arrived. One of them, a tall woman with sharp features, walked up to Kieran. Her armor gleamed in the fading sunlight, and her expression was unreadable.

"You there," she said, her voice commanding. "State your name and business."

Kieran straightened. "I am Kieran Vaelen," he said, using the name he had chosen for himself. "I'm here for the Academy Exam."

The woman raised an eyebrow. The name didn't seem to carry the weight of noble lineage, but that didn't matter. She nodded curtly and motioned for him to pass.

"Head to the Trial Grounds. The Exam begins tomorrow at dawn. Make sure you're prepared," she said. Then, turning her attention to the others arriving behind him, she called, "All candidates, form a line!"

The Trial Grounds: An Unseen Challenge

The Trial Grounds were located just beyond the city's gates, nestled in a series of fields where candidates were gathered for the Academy Exam. The grounds were vast, a mix of natural landscapes and arenas designed for testing every aspect of a mage's abilities—be it combat, control, or theory.

Kieran's eyes scanned the area as he took his place among the candidates. There were a variety of mages here—some wore expressions of quiet confidence, while others fidgeted nervously. He couldn't help but notice a few noble-born candidates who wore their arrogance like a badge. They walked with an air of superiority, looking down on those around them.

Yet, Kieran didn't let their presence affect him. His focus was solely on the task ahead: the Academy Exam.

"Let's see what you've got," Kieran muttered to himself, a faint smile tugging at the corners of his lips.

The Night Before the Exam

That night, Kieran stood alone in his small room at the Trial Grounds' barracks, staring at the window where the last light of the sun faded into the horizon. The moonlight bathed the room in a soft glow, and for a moment, everything felt still.

He closed his eyes and focused inward, feeling the mana swirling around him, the hum of the system in his mind. It wasn't yet fully unlocked, but the sense of power that lingered just beneath the surface was undeniable.

A voice echoed in his mind.

"Host, remember. You can rely on the System to assist in the upcoming exam, but the true test lies in how well you use your abilities without drawing attention."

Kieran nodded, already well aware of the dangers of overexposing his power. Staying in the shadows, appearing normal, was the key to achieving his goals. The exam would be a test of more than just magic—it would be a test of his ability to navigate this world of politics, power, and prestige.

As the night wore on and the distant sounds of the city grew faint, Kieran prepared for the exam. Tomorrow, his journey into the heart of the Magic Academy would officially begin.
