Chapter 17 - Arrival at Grandovale

The sun had barely crested over the rolling hills when Zen, Lyra, and Kien finally reached the outer gates of Grandovale. The capital city stood like a jewel of civilization nestled within towering silver walls, its grandeur stretching beyond anything Zen had imagined. Even from a distance, spires of ancient buildings touched the clouds, while brilliant banners fluttered in the wind above bustling roads that twisted like veins through the vast city.

Lyra gasped and jumped in place, eyes sparkling with excitement. "Finally! We made it!" she exclaimed. "And I didn't die of boredom or hunger!"

Kien chuckled beside her. "Only because Zen kept finding wild berries and cooking fish like a seasoned ranger."

Zen offered a small smile, quietly admiring the towering city ahead. His journey had brought him here — to the land of nobility, power, and magic. Yet, the weight of reality settled in again. He was still a commoner.

Guards in polished armor stood at the grand gate, inspecting travelers and checking entry permits. Lyra led the way, confidently showing a family crest pendant that shimmered with silver and blue. The guard nodded respectfully and waved them through.

As they stepped inside Grandovale, Zen's senses were overwhelmed. The air buzzed with magical energy. Floating carriages passed overhead, vendors sold enchanted trinkets, and even children practiced minor spells in open courtyards.

Kien nudged Zen. "First time seeing the capital?"

Zen nodded.

"Feels like a different world, huh?"

"It does," Zen murmured, eyes wide.

Lyra looped her arm through Zen's, grinning. "Wait till you see the academy. Eboncrest is at the heart of it all."

They navigated through cobbled streets and upward toward the central district. Eboncrest Arcanist's Academy loomed ahead, a cathedral-like structure built from darkstone and glowing veins of magic that pulsed through its towering spires. Magical symbols floated around its gates, reacting subtly to the presence of those nearby.

Zen stared, heart pounding. This is it.

Kien's expression was unreadable, but a glint of pride showed as he glanced at Zen. "Impressive, isn't it?"

Zen could barely speak. "It's… more than I imagined."

As they approached, Lyra whispered, "They won't let just anyone in. You have to show your worth, even if you've got the money."

Zen clenched his fists. "Then I'll show them."

Kien raised an eyebrow. "You'll need more than a strong sword arm."

Zen looked at both of them, determination in his voice. "I came here to change my fate. To grow strong enough to protect what matters. I won't turn back now."

Lyra smiled with pride, though her teasing tone remained. "Well, Mister Mysterious, let's see how far your stubbornness gets you."

Their journey had ended, but a new one — far more difficult, dangerous, and defining — was just beginning.
