Chapter 18 - Chapter 18: The Drone Murder

Everything happened so suddenly.

In the early hours of the morning, a sharp alarm sounded in the private garden of wealthy businessman Zhang Haifeng. Shortly after, he collapsed onto the carefully manicured garden path, blood quickly soaking into the fine grass and staining the morning dew. The security camera footage from the garden showed that he had not heard any alarm, nor had he noticed any figures. The only anomaly was a small shadow — a drone, silently entering his line of sight. Then, an arrow shot out swiftly, striking his neck with pinpoint accuracy.

This seemingly cinematic high-tech murder instantly shocked society. The police received the call and rushed to the scene, where they found Zhang Haifeng without signs of life. The cause of death was clear — a poisoned arrow had pierced his neck, coated with a lethal neurotoxin that acted swiftly, causing his death in mere moments. Su Wanqing immediately confirmed this on-site and, from the properties of the poison, deduced that it was a rare chemical compound, occasionally used in military applications, and not easily accessible to the general public.

"This is no ordinary murder, Su Wanqing," Lu Chenzhou said, standing in the center of the garden, frowning as he analyzed the situation. "This drone was operated with precision. No ordinary person could operate it so skillfully, especially in such a confined space."

"Exactly," Su Wanqing nodded, her gaze becoming sharper. "This case is not just a murder; it's a high-tech crime. The drone itself has inherent stealth and lethality, and it can easily bypass conventional security measures. What's crucial is that this drone is not a regular consumer model."

"You're saying there's a specialized team behind this?" Lu Chenzhou asked, clearly intrigued by the complexity of the case.

"Very likely," Su Wanqing pondered for a moment. "First, the design and operation of the arrow are highly precise, able to carry a heavy payload and fire it accurately. Also, the poison on the arrow is specialized, meaning this was a meticulously planned murder. Normally, drones don't have such a function."

Lu Chenzhou quickly pulled up Zhang Haifeng's profile and uncovered a shocking detail. Zhang Haifeng was a well-known business magnate, with a vast industrial chain spanning multiple sectors, especially in real estate and high-end technology. However, his private life was not well-known to the public. Zhang Haifeng had several children, but one illegitimate son had never been accepted or cared for by the family.

"We've found an important clue," Lu Chenzhou said, his tone serious. "Zhang Haifeng's illegitimate son, Zhang Wenjie, has been living abroad for a long time, rarely appearing in the media or family events. Since childhood, he was neglected by Zhang Haifeng, and the family inheritance struggle has never been made public."

"This Zhang Wenjie is likely the mastermind behind this," Su Wanqing said thoughtfully.

"He has the motive," Lu Chenzhou added. "If he planned all this, he would directly inherit a large fortune from Zhang Haifeng's death, and that money could change his life."

Su Wanqing nodded. According to Zhang Haifeng's will, the inheritance of his estate would primarily go to his legitimate eldest son, but Zhang Wenjie, as the illegitimate son, had always been excluded. The battle for the inheritance had left him angry and abandoned, and now, with the death of the wealthy man, he saw an opportunity to change his fate.

"We need to investigate the source of this drone," Su Wanqing said to Lu Chenzhou. "The control technology for such high-precision drones is not something an ordinary person could master. Zhang Wenjie's life abroad might provide us with more clues."

Lu Chenzhou quickly got in touch with relevant technology companies and drone experts to check for high-end drone models recently sold. By analyzing the drone's flight path, they found several unusual flight data — the drone had undergone several test flights in the days leading up to the crime, with unconventional and unregulated flight routes, and the times and locations of each flight closely aligned with Zhang Wenjie's activities abroad.

The police then investigated Zhang Wenjie and obtained records of his communication with drone manufacturers. These documents confirmed that Zhang Wenjie had not only purchased the drone but had also received training in its operation and had frequently inquired about custom drone services, seeking technical support for precise, long-distance strikes.

This drone was not a simple consumer product but had been specially modified for targeted strike missions. Its accuracy and quick response allowed it to hit a target several hundred meters away with precision. Everything pointed to Zhang Wenjie's meticulous planning.

"He carefully planned all of this to fight for his father's inheritance," Su Wanqing said, watching the surveillance footage, her expression grim. "By exploiting the drone's stealth and efficiency, he turned his father's death into what seemed like an accidental event. But he overlooked one thing: behind this high-tech murder, there would inevitably be traces left behind."

The police subsequently arrested Zhang Wenjie and found a drone identical to the one used in the crime at his private residence. Further investigation revealed communication records between Zhang Wenjie and several drone companies and technical teams, providing strong evidence to support the final classification of the case.

As the investigation progressed, Zhang Wenjie's motive and methods became clearer. His father, Zhang Haifeng, was not only his potential inheritor but also the father who had long neglected him. To obtain his father's fortune, Zhang Wenjie was willing to go to any lengths, erasing his father from both the family and his life completely.

"No matter how advanced the technology or how efficient the methods, crime will eventually be pursued by the law," Su Wanqing sighed.

"Indeed," Lu Chenzhou nodded deeply. "Even if he used the most advanced drones and poisoned arrows, he cannot escape the justice of the law."

With Zhang Wenjie's arrest, the truth behind the case was finally revealed, and this drone murder case left everyone with a deeper understanding of high-tech crime. As Su Wanqing said, "No matter how technology evolves, criminals will always leave traces, and the net of justice will eventually catch them."
