Chapter 3 - Chapter 2: Haki

Fuji Uchiha

Fuji Uchiha stood at the edge of a river. His reflection rippled in the dusk light.

As patriarch of the Uchiha clan, Fuji felt the weight of his role grow heavier each day. Konoha's other clans—the Aburame, Akimichi, Hyūga, Inuzuka, Nara, Senju, Sarutobi, and Yamanaka—had joined the village structure smoothly. The Uchiha still clung to the edges. Their pride stood like a wall thicker than the Hokage Rock.

Madara's attack on the village carved the rift deeper. Fuji swore loyalty to the Second Hokage, Tobirama Senju. Still, distrust clung like smoke after a fire. Some Uchiha, like Setsuna, doubted Tobirama's leadership. They whispered about reclaiming power from the Senju.

Tobirama watched Uchiha patrol a moment too long. Shopkeepers hushed when clansmen entered their stalls. Fuji understood their caution. A clan that produced Madara could produce another. Understanding did not stop the sting.

Pleading innocence to Konoha's council would shame every ancestor named on the clan tablets. The Uchiha believed this. The Uchiha would not bend. Not in public.

Fuji turned to the one path remaining: the children.

He found and observed Yuno Uchiha at the river behind the training grounds. Blood seeped from the boy's fists. He punched the trees again and again.

At four years old, Yuno stood like a shinobi. His spine was straight. His eyes looked as sharp as a falcon's. Fuji watched from the shadows. Yuno formed hand signs for the Fireball Jutsu. Flames roared to life. The fire burned crisp and controlled.

Fuji nodded. The boy was a prodigy. No one in his generation matched him.

Yuno's father led the clan for a short time after Madara's desertion. Age and illness forced him to pass the leadership role. His death came later. It was sudden and quiet. Yet, his influence remained. Yuno's father loved tradition more than progress.

'Strength without allies is a blade without a hilt. It cuts the wielder'. Yuno spoke the words to no one. His grandmother's death left him alone. Fuji saw an opportunity.

Other clan members tried to care for the boy. These were civilian Uchiha who owed debts to Yuno's grandmother. But Yuno kept to himself.

Fuji decided to mold Yuno according to his ideals. Fuji would position himself so the boy trusted and depended on him. He knew exploiting vulnerable people was easy, especially children. Though his plan seemed manipulative, Fuji believed he acted for the clan's greater good.

Fuji also knew, 'He has a claim to the position of Patriarch.'

Fuji knew his position as clan head remained insecure without heirs. Even with children, if they lacked talent, Yuno could take the position if Yuno chose.

'I must make him a capable helper for my successor,' Fuji mused. 'A genius like Yuno as a right-hand man offers great benefits. With his father's lingering influence, anyone Yuno fully supports will have a smooth journey.'

Fuji did not believe himself to be greedy for power. He simply felt only he could lead the Uchiha clan to greater heights.

He knows that although the Uchiha were powerful, if things do not change, the influence of the Uchiha will diminish drastically in the future, and Kagami, the naive fool, seems to be brainwashed by the ideals of the second hokage.

He saw himself as the only Uchiha rational and smart enough to face reality.

Becoming the patriarch was a once-in-a-lifetime chance, and he does not ask for much, just to elevate his clan and have his future descendants succeed him as the clan head.

'This is why an excellent candidate like Yuno cannot be allowed claim to the position.'

"Who's there?!!" Yuno's cautious voice echoed through the grounds.

Fuji frowned in the shadows. Doubt filled him. He pulled back.

'How did he sense me?' Fuji wondered. 'Even a Jonin struggles to spot me when I hide my presence. His instincts are sharp!'

But Yuno showing such talent was not bad for Fuji's plan. It meant Yuno would prove useful.

People knew Yuno was a genius, but Fuji lacked details on the boy's full abilities. Yuno seldom trained with other children. The elite chunin training Yuno remained loyal to Yuno's late father. She revealed little about the boy, even when Fuji asked.

_________

Yuno Uchiha

"Haki talent? Early mastery of observation haki? System, what is this Haki that you gave me?"

Yuno could feel that somehow his body had changed but didn't know how exactly.

[You possess unique potential. This concerns a power called Haki. It is unrelated to the Chakra you currently understand and utilize.]

"Haki? Not Chakra?" He straightened up slowly, intrigued despite his caution. "Explain this power. What is Haki?"

[Haki is, in essence, a manifestation of willpower. It is a power latent within all living creatures in a certain world, though most never awaken it. It allows users to exert their spirit over reality in specific ways. Haki divides into three primary categories.]

"Willpower made real… Three types. Specify them." He was becoming more interested.

[First is Kenbunshoku Haki, also known as Observation Haki. This type allows the user to sense the presence, strength, and emotions of others. Skilled users can predict opponents' movements shortly before they happen.]

Yuno's eyes flickered with recognition. "Sensing presence… Predicting movements… It sounds similar to shinobi sensory skills or the predictive capabilities of the Sharingan tracking muscle movements."

[There are parallels. However, Kenbunshoku Haki senses spiritual presence and intent directly, not merely Chakra signatures or physical tells. At higher levels, it can allow sensing over vast distances or perceiving the true nature of others.]

Yuno nodded slowly, absorbing the information. "A different medium for sensing. What is the second type?"

The system answered. [The second type is Busoshoku Haki, also known as Armament Haki. This allows the user to create an invisible armor around themselves using their spirit. This armor enhances both defensive and offensive capabilities. It can also imbue weapons, making them significantly harder and more effective.]

"Invisible armor created from spirit… Like enhancing the body with Chakra, but different? And imbuing weapons?"

[Correct. It functions as spiritual armor or a coating. A key function of Busoshoku Haki is its ability to bypass certain defenses and strike the substantial body of opponents who possess unique, seemingly intangible forms.]

Yuno considered this carefully. "Strike things that normally cannot be hit… Interesting?"

"System. You mentioned Busoshoku Haki creates armor and lets users strike intangible beings. Provide more detail on how this works."

He was actually more interested in the second type of haki, although the first one was interesting; the Sharingan could help him do what it could potentially do to a degree, so he was not as interested in it as much as the second one.

System: [Affirmative. Expanding on Busoshoku Haki. Recall that it is the manifestation of willpower as spiritual energy used for physical interaction. We can examine its defensive and offensive applications more closely.]

[Defensive Application: When used for defense, the user projects their spirit outward, forming a protective layer over their body or parts of it. Consider it like wearing unseen armor. This spiritual barrier intercepts incoming physical attacks. It can absorb impact, reduce damage, or even deflect strikes entirely. The strength of this defense is not absolute; it correlates directly with the user's proficiency and the strength of their willpower. A more determined spirit creates stronger Haki.]

"So, a stronger will means stronger armor. Can this armor be broken? Does it have limits?"

[Yes. A sufficiently powerful attack, or an attack infused with even stronger Busoshoku Haki, can shatter the defense. Furthermore, maintaining this armor, especially over large areas or against strong attacks, consumes the user's stamina and mental fortitude. Prolonged use can lead to exhaustion, weakening the armor or making it impossible to maintain. It is not an infinite defense.]

"It requires energy and focus, like maintaining some complex Jutsu. Understood. Now, explain the offense in more detail."

[Offensive Application: Offensively, Busoshoku Haki involves coating parts of one's own body—fists, feet, elbows, head—or held weapons with this same spiritual energy. This coating drastically increases the object's hardness and the force delivered upon impact. A Haki-coated fist strikes much harder than a normal fist. A Haki-coated sword becomes incredibly durable and cuts with greater power.]

"Hardness and power… like reinforcing steel with Chakra? What makes it unique beyond simple enhancement?"

[The crucial distinction lies in its interaction with certain unique abilities. In some worlds, individuals exist who possess bodies seemingly composed of elements or forces—like sand, smoke, ice, magma, or light. Conventional physical attacks often pass through these forms harmlessly. Busoshoku Haki is the counter. By infusing your attack with this Haki, you can bypass that elemental intangibility.]

Yuno's mind races, perhaps thinking of certain clan techniques or speculative abilities. "Bypass intangibility… How?"

[Busoshoku Haki allows the user to grasp or strike the 'substantial' or 'true' body of the opponent, ignoring the passive defense their unique physiology provides. It essentially forces physical interaction where none would normally occur. This makes it indispensable when fighting opponents with such intangible forms.]

"It negates that specific type of defense by enforcing contact with their real body. What about the appearance? You said it was invisible armor."

[Primarily, yes, especially at basic levels or when used lightly. However, when Busoshoku Haki is focused intensely, or applied with great skill and power, it often manifests visually. The coated area—be it a limb or a weapon—turns black, sometimes with a distinct metallic sheen or tribal-like patterns within the blackness. This visual change, often called 'Hardening', signifies a potent concentration of Busoshoku Haki.]

"The armor can become visible… a black coating indicating high power or focus." He murmured.

[Correct. This 'Hardening' is common among proficient users and serves as a visual indicator of Busoshoku application in combat. It represents taking the concept of spiritual armor and projecting it outward with such density that it becomes tangible and visible. Advanced users can develop even more refined applications, such as projecting Haki a short distance from their body or focusing it to destroy objects from the inside out, but these techniques require exceptional mastery.]

Yuno nodded slowly, filing away the information. "So, Busoshoku Haki provides breakable, stamina-draining spiritual armor. It enhances physical attacks. It allows striking otherwise intangible foes by contacting their true body. And powerful usage makes it visible as a black hardening. It is a direct combat application of willpower."

[An accurate assessment. Busoshoku Haki is a cornerstone of combat capability for those who awaken it. Its mastery directly influences a fighter's effectiveness in both attack and defense. Do you require further clarification on this Haki type?]

"Uh… No. The explanation is clear. Thank you, System."

Yuno had already thought of the application of this power and realized just how amazing it it.

[The third type is Haoshoku Haki, known as Conqueror's Haki. This is the rarest form. Only one in several million people possess this type. It is an expression of the user's spirit intimidating and overwhelming the will of others. Users can exert their willpower to dominate the spirits of those around them, causing weaker-willed individuals to lose consciousness.]

Yuno's eyes widen slightly. The concept resonates with a primal understanding of power. "Dominating spirit? Making others faint just by will… Is it a mental attack? Like Genjutsu?"

[No. It is not an illusion or mental manipulation. It is a direct outpouring of the user's willpower clashing against the willpower of others. Haoshoku Haki cannot be attained through training alone. One must be born with the potential, often described as the 'qualities of a king'.]

Yuno stood silently for a moment, processing. "So, Kenbunshoku for sensing and prediction. Busoshoku for spiritual armor and enhancement. And Haoshoku, a rare power to overwhelm will itself. All stemming from willpower, separate from Chakra."

[That is an accurate summary of the basics. Kenbunshoku and Busoshoku Haki can be trained and strengthened through rigorous effort and experience. Haoshoku Haki's potential is innate, though its control can be refined. This knowledge is the foundation.]

Yuno looked down at his own small hands, then back towards the empty space. "Haki… A power based on spirit… Thank you, System."

He whispers the words, barely audible, his voice filled with a quiet intensity. "Power… completely separate from Chakra… born only from will. Not from bloodlines, not from seals or scrolls, but from the spirit itself."

"And the third type, Haoshoku Haki… you said it was rare. Do… do I have it? Is that something you can tell?" His voice filled with a newfound eagerness.

[Regarding Haoshoku Haki, my current parameters do not allow for a definitive assessment of your innate potential. My function was to grant you the foundational talent and the capacity to wield all three forms of Haki by adjusting your physical and spiritual structure to align with individuals from a certain universe who possess this ability. However, the actual awakening and manifestation of Haoshoku Haki are entirely dependent on your own inner strength, will, and the specific circumstances you encounter.]

A flicker of disappointment crosses his face, quickly replaced by determination. "So, you gave me the potential for it, but it's up to me to unlock it?"

[Precisely. Haoshoku Haki is not a skill that can be taught or learned through conventional training. It is a power born from an individual's inherent dominance and kingly ambition. Only a select few are born with the capacity to wield it, and even among them, it requires significant willpower and often a powerful trigger to awaken.]

Yuno clenched a fist, his gaze intense "Kingly ambition… dominance… I understand. It's not enough to just have the possibility."

[Your understanding is correct. Consider the adjustments I have made as providing the fertile ground for this power to bloom. Whether it does or not rests solely with you.]

"System, you mentioned I was granted the talent for Kenbunshoku Haki. What is the basic level of mastery I should possess due to the gift you gave?"

[The foundational adjustment provides you with the innate ability to sense the immediate surroundings through the perception of intent and presence. At this initial stage, your sensory range is limited, and your ability to discern subtle emotions or future glimpses is minimal. Think of it as a nascent awareness, a slight expansion of your natural senses into the spiritual realm.]

"A slight expansion… I see. So, I should be able to sense something beyond just what my eyes and ears tell me?"

[Correct. Focus your awareness. Try to feel the presence of the life around you, the subtle energies and intentions that living beings emit. It is not about seeing with your eyes, but feeling with your spirit.]

Yuno closed his eyes, furrowing his brow in concentration. He focused inward, trying to grasp this new sense the System had described. It was like trying to hear a sound he didn't know existed. He strained, pushing his awareness outward, beyond the confines of his physical form.

After a moment of intense focus, a faint, indistinct impression flickered at the edge of his awareness. It was vague, almost imperceptible, like a subtle shift in the air. He concentrated harder, trying to latch onto it, to give it form.

Slowly, hesitantly, an image began to coalesce in his mind. It was blurry and indistinct, but he could just make out the shape of something solid about five meters away, to his left.

He opened his eyes and turned his head. There, exactly where his nascent Haki had indicated, was a small, unassuming bush.

"I… I think I felt something. A bush. About five meters that way."

[That is correct. You have registered the presence of the bush through your rudimentary Kenbunshoku Haki. This is the very first step. With training and focus, your range, clarity, and ability to interpret the sensory information will increase exponentially.]

Yuno stared at the bush with a mixture of awe and slight disappointment._ 'Only a bush… five meters. It's… not as powerful as I imagined._'

[Do not be discouraged, every master began with a single step. This initial awareness, though limited, is the foundation upon which greater sensory abilities will be built. The potential is there; it now requires your dedication to cultivate it.]

He nodded, his initial disappointment fading, replaced by a spark of determination 'A first step. Right. I can do this. I will learn to sense everything.'

He has always been talented and never had that much of a motivation when training. Even when he casually trains, he was already strong and could easily grasp things faster that other people.

Knowing this, he knew that becoming strong was just a matter of time, and he had no goal or motivation to push him.

Now, he had that goal. For the first time since he was born, he had a deep hunger for power, he craved strength with all his being. The future of his clan depended on him.

Although he avoided getting close to people or talking to others that much, beacause he always thought that he was possessed by a demon, it does not mean that he does not care for them.

The system had always annoyed him all the-

'Wait!'

"System." Yuno called out after realizing something.

[What… Missing me already?]

The familiar childish voice that always annoyed him responded this time instead of a cold and emotionless voice. He was so caught up with the Haki thing that he did not notice the change in the system.

"What is going on? There are two of you?"

[No that is just the default AI I created to handle some minor tasks. I am still the same system in charge of you.]

"AI?" Although he vaguely understood, the system used terms he was not familiar with.

[Ahh… Forget it for now, you are a native, some things won't make sense… But guess what? I have selected your first world]

"Already?!" He was surprised. "So when do I have to leave?" Yuno asked nervously.

[It depends on you; you can leave anytime you want, and time will not pass at all in this world, so stop being nervous. I advise you to leave as soon as possible. The sooner, the better]

"I see… I will leave tomorrow," he said after taking a deep breath.

___________

Yuno stood by the river behind the Uchiha training ground, the water flowing steadily past him.

He focused on the system's explanation of Busoshoku Haki, the hardening of one's spirit into an invisible armor. He pictured it in his mind: a black, tangible force coating his fists, making them like iron.

He drew back his arm and punched a small tree. The tree shuddered, leaves falling.

He punched it again and again, channeling his intent, trying to force his spirit outward. He wanted to feel that hardening, that strengthening. But nothing happened. His fist remained flesh and bone, only the tree showing signs of damage.

He tried different approaches. He focused on his hands, then his arms, imagining the Haki flowing through him like a current. He increased the force of his punches, trying to trigger some kind of reaction.

Still, there was nothing. No hardening, no change. Just the steady thud of his fist against wood.

Frustration began to simmer within him. He had manifested Observation Haki, however weakly, with relative ease. Although he was given an early mastery by the system, he didn't think about how hard it was to actually do it on his own from the get-go.

Why was Armament Haki proving so difficult? Was he doing something wrong? Was his will not strong enough, or was the talent he got from the system not that great?

He continued his training, the rhythmic impact of his fists echoing through the trees. He pushed himself harder, ignoring the growing ache in his muscles. He was determined to feel that power, to unlock the potential the System had granted him.

Suddenly, his concentration broke. A prickling sensation crawled across his skin. It was faint, but unmistakable: a presence, distinct and heavy, not far from him.

Yuno stopped punching, his body tensing. He scanned the surrounding trees, his dark eyes sharp and alert.

"Who is there?" he shouted, his voice cutting through the quiet of the riverbank. He stood ready, his senses straining, every nerve on high alert. The only sound was the rush of the water and the rustle of leaves in the wind.

"Show yourself!!"

There was still nothing.

Yuno stood frozen, the echo of his shout fading into the rustling leaves. He was surprised.

Ten meters away, he had distinctly felt something. It was faint, a mere whisper in his nascent sensory awareness, but undeniably there.

Yet, when he had actively tried to focus his Kenbunshoku Haki just moments before, he could barely register the bush a mere five meters away.

"System," he said, his voice hushed with confusion, "I felt a presence just now, maybe 15 meters away. But when I try to focus my Haki, I can barely sense that bush at five meters. Why is that?"

[Your experience highlights a crucial aspect of Kenbunshoku Haki: the role of instinct and passive awareness. In moments of heightened alertness or perceived threat, your survival instincts can trigger a more pronounced, albeit unfocused, sensory perception. It is a primal response, a subconscious scanning of your immediate environment for danger.]

[This type of sensory input is often raw and lacks detailed information, but it can alert you to potential threats or significant presences within a certain radius.]

"But why can't I replicate that when I actively try to use my Haki? Why is my focused sensing range so much smaller?"

[Focused Kenbunshoku Haki requires conscious effort and control. It is akin to intentionally directing your gaze versus having your eyes passively register movement. Your current level of mastery is still rudimentary. You possess the foundational ability, but you have not yet developed the skill to consistently and deliberately extend your sensory range or interpret the subtle information you receive. Your instincts are currently more adept at triggering a basic awareness than your conscious control over your Haki.]

"So, the faint sense at ten meters was instinct, but actively trying to sense at five meters requires more control that I don't have yet?"

[Precisely. Think of your instincts as a wild, untamed sense, capable of brief, broad detections in response to stimuli. Focused Kenbunshoku Haki is like training that wild sense, refining it, extending its reach, and allowing you to interpret the nuances of what you perceive. Your current training should focus on bridging this gap, on consciously accessing and controlling the sensory awareness that your instincts can momentarily provide.]

Yuno nodded slowly, absorbing this information. "So, I need to learn to make my focused Haki as sensitive as my instincts were in that moment. More sensitive, even."

[That is the path to mastery. Understand the difference between the instinctive flicker of awareness and the deliberate application of your Kenbunshoku Haki. Train to consciously replicate and then surpass the range and clarity your instincts momentarily granted you.]

[Yuno Uchiha, it is important to manage your expectations. Unlike the initial flicker of Kenbunshoku Haki you experienced with the help of the system, manifesting Armament Haki, even with your inherent talent, will not occur in mere moments of focused intent. It is a more demanding application of your spiritual power, requiring a deeper understanding and control.]

"So, it's not as simple as just… willing it to happen?" He deflated.

[No. Armament Haki requires a more substantial connection to your inner strength and a deliberate projection of that strength outwards. Think of Kenbunshoku Haki as sensing the world around you, while Busoshoku Haki is about directly influencing and interacting with that world through your spirit. This requires a different kind of focus and a more significant exertion of willpower.]

But I've been trying, focusing all my energy…

[And that effort is commendable. However, grasping even the basics of Armament Haki often necessitates consistent and rigorous training. You must learn to channel your inner power, to visualize it as a tangible force, and to direct it to coat your body or your strikes. This is a process that takes time, dedication, and repeated attempts. Do not feel frustrated by your current lack of immediate success.]

Yuno looked at his hands, a hint of the earlier frustration returning. "But I thought with the talent you gave me-"

[The talent provides you with the potential to wield Haki. It means your body and spirit are attuned to its principles, making it possible for you to learn. However, it does not grant you instant mastery. Imagine being given the talent for swordsmanship. You would still need to pick up a sword, practice your stances, and swing countless times to become proficient. Armament Haki is similar; your talent is the potential, your training is the path to realization.]

He took a deep breath, the frustration slowly receding. 'So, this will take more than just a few punches at a tree.'

[Indeed. You will need to explore different methods of focusing your will, visualizing the Haki, and attempting to manifest it in various ways. Consistency is key. Do not be discouraged by initial failures. Each attempt, even if unsuccessful, will contribute to your understanding and eventual mastery. Be patient, Yuno Uchiha, and persistent in your training.]

He nodded, a renewed sense of determination hardening his gaze. "I understand. It will take time and effort. I won't give up."

He was a bit bothered that someone decided to spy on him, so he dropped what he was doing and decided to take a break. Tomorrow would be the day he took the mission from the system.

_______________

Yuno, his mind still buzzing with the revelations about Haki, decided a walk through the village might help clear his thoughts. The training ground had left him feeling both intrigued and slightly inadequate.

He wandered, his senses idly taking in the familiar sights and sounds of the village, when a series of sharp, rhythmic impacts reached his ears.

They sounded like they were fighting, and the intensity hinted at more than just children playing. Curiosity piqued, Yuno followed the sounds, which led him to a more secluded training area tucked away behind some denser foliage.

Peeking through the leaves, he saw two figures locked in what appeared to be serious sparring. One was a boy, his skin almost unnaturally pale, with long, dark hair that swished with his movements.

His strikes were fluid and precise. Facing him was a girl with bright blond hair tied in bouncy pigtails. She moved with surprising strength and aggression, her small fists packing a noticeable punch.

Observing them with a keen gaze was another boy, his hair a striking white, his expression thoughtful. All three looked to be around his own age, four years old, yet their movements displayed a level of skill that immediately caught Yuno's attention.

They were far beyond the clumsy playfights he occasionally witnessed.

Just as Yuno was absorbing the scene, a stray twig snapped beneath his foot. The sounds of combat abruptly ceased. T

The two sparring children froze mid-motion, and the white-haired observer's head snapped towards his hiding spot. All three pairs of eyes, locked onto Yuno's position.

The white-haired boy stepped forward slightly, pointing his finger at him "Who are you?" he demanded.

Yuno, caught off guard, stepped out from behind the foliage. "Just passing by," he said, keeping his tone neutral, not wanting to intrude.

But before the white-haired boy could respond, the blonde-haired girl with the pigtails called out, her voice surprisingly loud and clear, "Wait!"
