Chapter 89 - Chapter 90: Shadows from the Past

The silence in the sleek underground room was thunderous. Riley could hear her heart thudding in her ears as she stared down at the photo—her mother, years ago, smiling beside a man who exuded the same commanding, dangerous presence as Zayden.

"This doesn't make any sense," she whispered, reaching out to trace the edges of the photograph with trembling fingers. "My mom never mentioned anyone like him. She never talked about her past at all."

Zayden was still, unnaturally so. His eyes scanned every detail of the image, every flicker of emotion crossing Riley's face. "We need to find out who he is," he said, his voice low. "And how he's tied to you. Because I'm starting to think this… us… it was never a coincidence."

Riley turned to him, confused. "What are you saying?"

"I'm saying you might not have just walked into my life randomly, Riley." His voice tightened. "I think someone put you in my path."

Her breath caught. "No… That's not possible."

Zayden reached for the files again, flipping through pages and photos like a man searching for a ghost. Finally, he pulled out another image—a grainy surveillance still from years ago. The man in the photo stood near the entrance of Crestwood Elite Academy. The date read: Ten years ago.

Riley's knees nearly gave out.

Because standing beside the man—wearing a school uniform too big for her frame—was a much younger version of her.

"I don't remember this," she said, voice barely above a whisper.

"That's because they didn't want you to." Zayden looked at her, his gaze unreadable. "Your mother… she might've been hiding more than just secrets."

Riley stepped back, the ground shifting beneath her.

"No, she was just a nurse. A single mom. We never had money, power, any of this."

"Exactly," Zayden murmured. "Which means someone with power was keeping you hidden on purpose."

A new fear bloomed in Riley's chest—bigger than the fights with Zayden, bigger than their rivalry and the school drama. Something deeper was unfolding, something that had been set in motion long before she even understood who she was.

"Who am I really, Zayden?"

He looked at her with something raw in his eyes.

"I don't know," he admitted. "But I'll find out. Even if I have to burn everything down to do it."

And with that vow hanging heavy between them, they both knew there was no going back.
