The popping of her gum was driving Darwin crazy.
Pop!
"To solve this equation, you simply..."
Pop!
"Place x and..."
Pop!
"Then you take y..."
Pop!
Shit!
He spat under his breath, clenching his jaw in frustration.
"Am I annoying you?" Her voice was like a kitten's purr, deep and inviting.
He refused to look at her, pretending she wasn't talking to him.
Then someone else drew her attention, and Darwin let out a breath he didn't realize he'd been holding.
He swore he heard her chuckle as she turned to Matt Harlow, captain of the football team. Darwin hadn't even noticed he was in the class until now.
Matt's blue gaze landed on Darwin, and Darwin immediately focused all his energy on his pen, trying to avoid eye contact.
"Is he bothering you?" Matt asked.
She giggled. "What, you wanna beat him up for me?"
Matt chuckled. "Is that what you want?"
Darwin held his breath, silently pleading.
Please, no. He didn't want to be a target again.
"Don't touch him," she said darkly.
