Chapter 9 - Chapter 9

Xiao Cheng quickly brought over office supplies and hung a black nameplate on Lu Mingjun's workstation: Lu Mingjun, Trainee Lawyer.

Lu Mingjun looked at the badge, took a photo, and sent it to her supervisor. Then she began organizing her workstation.

As she was tidying up, she noticed that there weren't many people around.

But she soon realized—lawyers don't always stay in the office.

Generally speaking, lawyers enjoy much more flexibility than ordinary professionals. For instance, even though it was almost ten o'clock, there were only one or two practicing lawyers visible across the room.

In the trainee lawyer section where Lu Mingjun was placed, only six people were currently present.

Sitting directly across from her was a cheerful-looking young man who seemed to have joined the workforce right after college.

She glanced at the nameplate on his desk: Qin Wenfeng, Trainee Lawyer.

To her left sat a girl with short hair, whose badge read: Miao Qingchuan, Trainee Lawyer.

Noticing Lu Mingjun's curious glance, Miao Qingchuan smiled and said,

"Hello, Lawyer Lu. I'm Miao Qingchuan, from the Law School of S University."

Lu Mingjun smiled back. "Hello, Lawyer Miao. I'm Lu Mingjun, from the Law School of W University."

At that moment, Qin Wenfeng joined in. He looked up, grinning brightly.

"Hi, Lawyer Lu! I'm from the Criminal Law School of H University."

He pointed to his nameplate and added, "Qin Wenfeng. Please give me your guidance!"

Lu Mingjun smiled and joked, "I heard criminal defense lawyers are supposed to be super serious. Looks like that rumor isn't true!"

The three of them laughed.

Seeing the friendly atmosphere, Miao Qingchuan asked,

"Mingjun, do you know which senior lawyer you've been assigned to?"

Lu Mingjun shook her head. So far, she had only interacted with Jiang Xinxin, and it wasn't clear whether Director Jiang intended to personally mentor her.

Hearing this, Miao asked again, "So which practice area are you planning to focus on?"

Lu Mingjun shook her head again. Although Director Jiang had suggested tax law, she hadn't fully made up her mind.

Just as Miao Qingchuan was about to speak again, Qin Wenfeng cut in:

"Lawyer Lu just got here. Let her get settled in first!"

After their brief chat, everyone returned to their own work.

Lu Mingjun resumed organizing her desk. She installed the law firm's office software on her computer and arranged her books, pens, and other supplies.

By the time everything was set up and she opened her work portal, Wang Lulu had already sent her several case files with a message asking her to familiarize herself with them.

Having over a decade of workplace experience, Lu Mingjun understood well that for civil and commercial lawyers, the most profitable work wasn't litigation—but non-litigation legal services.

For example, the first case Wang Lulu sent her was about an equity transfer involving Changhong Group.

Some people say that equity transfers can be handled directly through the Market Supervision Administration.

Well, if you're following a textbook procedure, that's true.

But behind equity, it's never just assets—it's liabilities too.

That's why clients are willing to pay lawyers—to help them identify and avoid the hidden risks.

Jiang Xinxin could easily handle this sort of work herself.

But the reason she needed Lu Mingjun was because of the tax implications of equity transfers.

If stock transfer procedures aren't planned properly, the parties involved may face significant personal income tax liability. In some cases, it could even trigger land value-added tax.

As she processed this, Lu Mingjun finally understood why Director Jiang had wanted her—and why she had been so generous with her internship offer.

It all traced back to this equity transfer case. After all, her graduate thesis had focused on planning equity transfers and related tax implications.

There's no such thing as a free lunch. In law, your value is directly tied to your expertise.

Lu Mingjun took a deep breath and reviewed the remaining cases. Aside from one involving the disposal of non-performing assets, the rest were fairly standard.

She checked the time and decided to start with the simpler cases.

After drafting the litigation plans, writing the complaints, and compiling the evidence lists, she packaged everything and sent it through the firm's internal system to Wang Lulu.

Lu Mingjun: Assistant Wang, I need to study the Changhong Group equity transfer and the non-performing asset case from S Asset Management. I've sent you the materials for the other cases first.

Wang Lulu: Lawyer Lu, Director Jiang has asked you to be responsible for those litigation cases!

Lu Mingjun immediately understood. She didn't say anything else, but the corners of her lips curved upward.

You give me a peach, I give you a plum.

Lu Mingjun then focused on the Changhong Group case.

As she examined the company's financial statements from the past five years, she frowned.

Given their financial condition, the tax bureau would definitely scrutinize this transaction closely.

By the time she looked up, it was already 11:30.

Miao Qingchuan stood up and asked,

"Lawyer Lu, want to have lunch together?"

At that moment, Lu Mingjun was browsing the tax bureau website for J Province, where S City is located, looking up regulations related to equity transfers.

Without hesitation, she declined:

"Thank you, Lawyer Miao. I've just had an idea about this case. I'd like to work on it a bit more."

Miao blinked, surprised.

"You already have a case? You haven't even been assigned a mentor yet!"

Lu Mingjun, eyes still on the screen, replied,

"Yes, Assistant Wang sent me a few cases. Since I just joined, I need to show results. You all go ahead!"

Miao looked at her serious expression and said with a hint of envy,

"Lawyer Lu is really lucky—Assistant Wang personally handed you cases! Alright, I won't disturb you."

She picked up her bag and walked out.

Qin Wenfeng watched her leave, then stood up to follow. Before leaving, he turned back and asked,

"Lawyer Lu, want me to bring you anything?"

Lu Mingjun looked up and smiled,

"Thank you, Lawyer Qin, but I brought some bread."

Qin nodded and left without another word.

Lu Mingjun returned to the tax bureau website, searching for useful references.

She was so engrossed that she didn't even hear the sound of high heels approaching.

It wasn't until a voice spoke behind her that she looked up.

"I knew I wasn't wrong about you, Lu Mingjun," said Jiang Xinxin.

"You're doing very well."
