Chapter 4 - The Survival Anniversary

A week later, at Cangnan City No. 2 Middle School.

"Hey, look. Is that person from our school? Why is there a piece of cloth covering his eyes?"

"He's wearing our school uniform, so he must be from our school."

"He's holding a white cane in his hand. It seems he's blind."

"That's strange. Why haven't we seen him before?"

"He should be one of the new freshmen in senior high school this year, right?"

I have to say, with those a few loops of black cloth wrapped around his eyes, he looks quite handsome."But how can a blind person attend classes? Our school doesn't seem to have special classes for the disabled, does it?"

"I don't know."

"..."

As expected, the moment Lin Qiye walked through the school gate, he attracted a great deal of attention.

However, Lin Qiye had experienced this kind of situation too many times. He walked through the maple leaf avenue on campus as if no one else was around, heading in the direction of the teaching building.

Come to think of it, Lin Qiye had been prepared to face those troublemakers before coming. After all, in many mindless and satisfying novels, in such a situation, a few so-called "school bullies" who were rather foolish would surely jump out and mock him, laying the groundwork for his future display of superiority and retaliation...

However, those troublemakers didn't show up. Instead, quite a few students took the initiative to approach him and ask if he needed any help.

This made Lin Qiye feel a bit disappointed for some reason.

Thinking about it, these were all modern students who had gone through nine years of compulsory education. How could there be so many thoughtless troublemakers? Moreover, even if there were those small groups, they now emphasized "brotherhood in the underworld." It was okay to help their brothers solve problems and show off their bravado on ordinary days, but if they really went to bully a disabled person, They would be drowned in spit the next day and completely ruin their reputation.

Lin Qiye walked up the stairs and soon found his classroom, Class 2, Grade 2. He had already studied in a special school for his first year of senior high school. Now, after transferring, he was an transferred student.

Judging from most TV dramas, movies, and novels, transferred students were generally synonymous with being neglected, isolated, and miserable. After all, in the first year of senior high school, various small groups had already taken shape. If one didn't take the initiative, it would be very difficult to truly integrate into the class.

Lin Qiye knew very well that he wasn't the kind of person who took the initiative.

Even if he had been in the same class as them since the first year of senior high school, with his standoffish aura, he would probably still be alone by now.

However, being alone wasn't necessarily a bad thing. At least, Lin Qiye himself enjoyed this feeling. Without being disturbed, he could cultivate his mind in peace and focus on his studies...

If he were to deliberately try to build good relationships with others, he wouldn't know how to do it.

Standing at the door of the classroom, Lin Qiye took a deep breath, composed himself, and stepped inside.

The moment Lin Qiye entered the class, the originally noisy voices suddenly stopped, and the air became quiet all of a sudden...

One second, two seconds, three seconds...

Just as Lin Qiye was about to say something, the class suddenly erupted!

"You must be classmate Lin Qiye, right? Your seat is already prepared over there."

"Classmate Lin Qiye, can't you see? I'll take you there."

"Classmate, walk slowly. There are a lot of things in the corridor... You, the one over there, quickly put your schoolbag away!"

"..."

Before Lin Qiye could react, several classmates had already stepped forward and carefully led him to his seat. A tall boy even took Lin Qiye's schoolbag directly and carried it on his shoulder.

Surrounded by many people, Lin Qiye "safely" reached his seat.

Lin Qiye: ...?

This was a bit different from what he had expected.

"Classmate Lin Qiye, I'm Jiang Qian, the monitor of this class. If you have anything, you can come to me," said a girl with a ponytail, patting her chest.

"My name is Li Yifei. If you're going to have a meal, just call me, and I'll take you there," the boy who helped him carry the bag smiled.

"And me. My name is Wang Shao..."

"..."

Many people crowded around him, greeting him warmly.

For a moment, Lin Qiye was at a loss.

To be honest, this was quite different from what he had imagined.

"You guys... know me?" Lin Qiye had a rather strange expression on his face.

"The homeroom teacher told us about you," the monitor Jiang Qian replied. "However, what impressed us the most was your aunt. That day, she stood right here with a basket of eggs and gave them to us one by one, asking us to take care of you..."

It was as if a thunderclap exploded in Lin Qiye's mind, and he stood there stunned.

He couldn't hear what the other classmates were saying next. He just stared blankly at the classroom, and the image of that middle-aged woman with a hunched back involuntarily appeared in his mind. She was carrying a basket of freshly boiled eggs and earnestly pleading with the classmates.

"Classmates, please do me a favor. My nephew has some trouble with his eyes, and he has a cold personality. Please take care of him a bit more..."

"Little girl, you're really pretty. My nephew is also very handsome. You'll definitely like him..."

"Qiye is a cold on the outside but warm on the inside. Once you get to know him well, you'll definitely get along well with him..."

"..."

Before he knew it, the black ribbon became slightly moist.

"Aunt..." he murmured.

While everyone was chatting noisily, a female teacher walked in with some textbooks under her arm. Seeing Lin Qiye sitting in the front row, she first came up to offer a few words of comfort. Then, she briefly introduced him to the class and started the lesson.

"Everyone, turn to page 91 of your textbooks. Today, we're going to talk about the history and difficulties of modern Daxia,"

It seemed that because of Lin Qiye's presence, the teacher skipped the process of skimming through the textbook today and directly started explaining the content of the book.

"A hundred years ago, there were still more than 200 countries on Earth, distributed across the seven continents and four oceans. Their customs and cultures were all different. Even in that era when technology wasn't very advanced, we could still take ships to different countries and experience the collision of different cultures..."

"However, on March 9th of that year, a mysterious thick fog suddenly appeared out of thin air in Antarctica and then spread at an astonishing speed. Within just 24 hours, it engulfed nearly 98% of the Earth's surface area."

"The skyscrapers built by humans, the primeval forests that had existed since ancient times, the bottomless oceans... everything was covered by the fog. Countless countries fell into the fog, and there was no news from them."

"However, when this incredible fog was about to invade the territory of Daxia... it stopped."

"No one knows the reason, but it just stopped so strangely."

"Over the past hundred years, countless theories and speculations have been put forward. Some people say that this fog is actually a kind of creature. After devouring 98% of the Earth, it was just full, so it stopped near Daxia. Some people say that it's because there's a special magnetic field in the location where Daxia is situated, which hindered the spread of the fog. Others say that it's the accumulation of Daxia's five-thousand-year heritage that's playing a role, protecting this land..."

"The composition of this fog completely exceeds human knowledge. Whether it's light, sound, radio waves, or other detection methods, nothing can penetrate this fog. No one knows if those other countries that were swallowed up by the fog a hundred years ago still exist behind this fog..."

"According to experts' speculation, the probability of their survival in the fog is extremely low because whether this fog is inhaled into the lungs or comes into contact with the skin surface... it's lethal!"

"Over the past hundred years, our country has sent countless well-equipped exploration teams into the fog, but not a single person has come back."

"Fifty years ago, our country's first satellite was successfully launched. Judging from the pictures and images transmitted back from space, the entire Earth has turned grayish-white, and only Daxia remains a pure land."

"Now, Daxia is like an isolated island on this planet, and we... might be the last survivors on this planet."

"Therefore, the day when the fog appeared, that is, March 9th every year, is called the 'Survival Day'."
