Chapter 1 - Rebirth City

My name is Logan Frost, and I made my living as a detective of the eighth precinct of Rebirth City. In this city, most of the people that lived here were making a new life for themselves by working under the three main corporations that ran a lot of the things in this city. It was either that or join one of the four gangs that always caused trouble for others at night.

The first corporation that made its roots in here was BioSync Nexus Corp. They made their name by providing top-quality cybernetic enhancement at a convenient price.

The next main corporation that was in the city was CortexWeave Technologies. This company made it to where they provided their customers with ai that was able to merge with their owners for short periods of time that allowed them to have the knowledge of the ai at the disposal to where they could work their body or mind as fast as that model of ai was able to.

The final company was Vigilant Devil. They became the most respected firm of cybersecurity in the city. They even had an active contract with the police department of the city.

Almost every citizen of this city had either joined one of the three big corporations as employes or they became a member of one of the gangs. This was a very cruel city for people to call home, but most of those that survived what the city had to throw at them would become the kind of people that you normally would not want to cross. This city had a habit of turning the most strait-laced person into a ruthless monster.

I was a tall and slim young white man with short, straight black hair and a thick and scruffy beard. I was wearing a black trench coat, a pair of black slacks, and a pair of black dress shoes. My body was augmented with a red circular cybernetic implant around my right eye that glitched out at least four times in one day.

Compared to everyone else who lived here in Rebirth City, I stood out because I did not use any of the modern cybernetic implants. I did not trust any of the corporations because I did my own private investigation on my own time, which led to corruption on the deepest level.

Because I did not get the latest model of cybernetic implant, I was always slower on processing and reacting to the things that I discovered while I was on an active crime scene. Due to this, most of the other cops in the eighth precinct ignored me wherever I went because of how superior they thought that they were to me because of their more advanced implants.

"Detective Frost, I need you to go to the main alleyway behind the main structure of BioSync Nexus Corp. also remember not to fail me on this one. If you fail again, I will have to demote you back to the life of a simple beat cop" I heard my captain say to me in a sluggish tone as he walked past me while carrying a crinkled up brown sack in his right hand.

Whenever I saw the sight of the captain with a crinkled up brown bag that told me that he either today was a bad day for him or he had special with one of the ladies that I always saw him spend the last few hours of work with.

"Sure, boss, I will do what I must". I said to him as I rose from my desk and put on my black wool jacket, ready to take on another case.

I walked out of the main building where we had our workstations and office space and stepped into the lively night of Rebirth City and made my way down the road towards BioSync Corp, which was to the east of the prescient. Since it was only four blocks away, I chose to walk there instead of using a squad car.

The streets were super active, and everyone around me were talking through their modern implants to either people from far away or the ai of their gear. This caused me to be separated from the rest because I knew that I would have to answer the ones that asked me about my cybernetic augmentation and why I do not get any newer models.

After I had made it to the next block, I was able to tell that I was being followed from behind because of the loud noises that I heard as they were bumping into people and stepping on cans and trash on the ground.

To take care of them, I walked down the first alleyway that was on the final block of my journey to the crime scene. As I walked into the alleyway, I noticed that they had followed me there like moths heading to a flame.

I stopped moving forward, and then they seemed to quicken their pace, and they stopped moving with a dagger that was stuck in my back.

"So do you think that you are such a strong group by teaming on me." I said to them as they were starting to surround me.

The humans in front of me all had a lot of cybernetic enhancement. The enhancements ranged from cybernetic eyes to an implant in the sides of their heads. This told me that they had chosen me because of how out of date my implants were in comparison to theirs.

"Shut up. We are the ones that are in control of this situation." A young high-pitched male said to me from behind as he twisted the knife that he had on my back.

The sound of his voice told me that he was no older than fifteen years old. That meant that I could not use any lethal force to get out of this situation.

When they all started to swing at me with their knives, I was able to quickly knock them out of their hands with ease with a swift flurry of punches that were aimed at their wrists. This told me that they did not have any kind of training with how to properly use the knives that they had as both an offensive weapon and a means to defend themselves.

After I had knocked their daggers out of their hands, I quickly kicked each of them against the wall of the alleyway that was to my right.

"I will make you regret that!" I heard behind me, which caused me to turn around and face my opponent.

Then he came rushing at me and started to swing his knife in a blind rage that made his moves slopy and very easy to read.

I dodged him with ease and then grabbed him by the t-shirt that he was wearing and tossed him on the top of the pile that was made where I tossed the crooks that tried to attack me against the wall of the alleyway.

As soon as the last person hit the wall, I walked over to where they were all clumped up together.

"Now I hope that you will not be stupid enough to try and mug someone who is a member of the Rebirth City police force." I said to them as I looked at them and checked their pulse to ensure that I did not kill them by using too much force on them.

After I made sure that they were not dead, I walked back to the main street since I needed to get to the crime as soon as I possibly could.

I was able to notice that I had arrived at the main building for BioSync Nexus Corp. because of the hologram that was spinning around in front of the building. This hologram showed a total of three different implants that they provided their customers.

The first thing that was advertised was an implant that improved someone's ability to see even in the dark. The second one showed an augmentation that gave the wearer the ability to adjust their human strength beyond its natural limits.

Since I did not have the time to watch the final item, I walked around the left side of the building until I saw police cars and crime scene tape which told me that I had finally arrived at what could possibly be my final crime scene if I failed to solve this case.

This area was blocked by a policeman barricade, which I was able to pass when I showed one of the police officers my badge. They each were wearing a full set of battle armor that covered their entire body. They also all had a section in their arms where I saw port for them to insert data chips.

"The captain must be thinking that this is a very simple case if he has asked you to investigate it." A short and stout male cop said to me as I walked past the barricade.

"Oh, shut up, Johnson, and let me do my job. I do not believe that I say that they put you only on the guarding assignments for easy jobs. So, do not insult me with my detective skills." I said in response to what he said as I watched the policemen reseal the barrier.

Then I walked into the active crime scene that I was assigned by the captain and I saw that there was a pair of dead female bodies that were laying on the ground right to the left of the back door into the company.

I saw that there was one of the three medical personnel that worked with the eighth precinct. I hoped that the person who was on duty tonight was not the only one that I did not get along with. As I approached the bodies, I saw that it was one of the two that I did not get along with at all. The person that I had to deal with on this case was Doctor Alex Victor.

Doctor Alex Victor was tall and very slim, and he was wearing a set of medical scrubs as he stood over the two bodies and began to examine them with his robotic fingers that had cybernetic enhancements in them.

"It just had to be you that I had to deal with on this case" Alex Victor said to me as I approached him.

"Well, I hope that you will at least be professional enough that you can work with me to complete this case." I said to him as I activated my cybernetic eye to look for any hidden details in the crime scene.

"I can do that if you can at least act professional and not bring your feelings for my sister into it." he said to me as he continued to examine the body.

"How dare you bring up someone that you do not have the right to talk to me about!" I exclaimed out of rage as I put my hands on his medical scrubs.

I then let go of him after a few seconds, knowing that this was neither the place nor the time for me to fight over what had happened to his sister five years ago.

"I will only do what is required of me to complete the job. After that is done, I do not want to deal with you anymore than I must." He said to me as he stood up and started to show me the data that he had collected on the case that was on a drive.

"All right, I can work with that." I said to him as I grabbed the chip and placed it in the one drive area of my cybernetic implant around my eye.

As soon I placed the chip into the open section of my implant, I was able to see a holographic display of the two dead bodies with active tabs of text at different key areas of their bodies. These holograms were colored a dark green.

I opened the tab that was located on the first girl's right wrist. This area of her body had clear burns on the bottom part of her wrist. Then, as I pressed the tab, I saw a list of notes that stated that these were chemical burns that were at least six weeks old.

Then I saw that she had a pair of needle marks on the right side of her neck and that her veins along that side of her neck were dark blue. The tab of information about her neck said that she was most likely drugged before she was killed.

After I read that information, my cybernetic eye began to glitch out, and everything became fuzzy. So that I did not get an intense headache again because of using out of date cybernetic hardware, I quickly removed the data chip and gave it back to Alex.

"All right, I have gathered all the data on this current crime scene. You can now take both bodies back to the precinct to gather more details about them. I will come back in a couple of hours to see if you have discovered anything new about them." I said to him as I walked out of the active crime scene.

I knew that I would have to rely on the network of informants that I have developed over the ten years that I have been a member of the police force of Retro City.

Would I be able to solve this crime with my inferior and out of date cybernetic enhancements or would this be my very last case as a detective of the ninth precinct of the police force of Rebirth City?
