Chapter 36 - Chapter 37: The Battle of Truths

The noise of battle echoed through the sterile halls of the Hydra facility as we made our way deeper into the heart of the complex. The sound of clashing weapons, the crackling of energy blasts, and the rhythmic thud of boots against metal floors set a relentless pace. But it wasn't just the noise that made the tension so unbearable—it was the underlying weight of everything that was happening.

Steve and I fought side by side, as we always had, though this time, the stakes felt higher. Every Hydra agent that fell in front of us was another reminder of the stakes we faced—of the people they had turned into weapons, of the world we were trying to protect from the terrifying horrors Hydra was still capable of unleashing.

We made it to the heart of the lab, where the Synthesis project's data core hummed ominously in the center of the room. The metal walls around us were lined with monitors displaying encrypted files, scientific data, and faces—too many faces. I could feel the weight of it all pressing down on me, suffocating me with the sheer knowledge of the destruction Hydra had caused.

Steve was the first to break the silence.

"We've got to get to that core, Bucky. Whatever Hydra's been working on, it's all there."

His voice was sharp, his focus unwavering. But I could hear the unspoken words in his tone—the fear. We both knew the core held more than just data. It was the key to everything Hydra was trying to achieve, and if we didn't destroy it, they would have control over an army of enhanced soldiers who could destroy everything we loved.

I nodded, but my mind was somewhere else—back on the faces on the monitors. Soldiers, scientists, civilians—all manipulated, twisted into something unrecognizable. I gritted my teeth. "I know, Steve. But I can't just look at this and pretend like we're just fighting for some files. Hydra's been doing this for too long. They've created something worse than just soldiers. They've created monsters."

Steve's expression softened for a moment, as if he understood exactly what I meant. His eyes flicked over to the screens, too, and for a brief second, I saw something I hadn't expected—regret, sadness, even a little guilt. Steve had always been the symbol of hope and righteousness, but even he knew how much destruction Hydra had caused.

"We can't let it continue," Steve said, voice barely above a whisper. "We stop this now, Bucky. This isn't just about us anymore. It's about making sure the world doesn't fall to pieces because of them."

A familiar voice cut through the tension, and I turned to see Natalie standing by the entrance, her eyes scanning the chaos around us. "The data core is protected by a fail-safe. We need to destroy it before they lock us out completely. Hydra isn't going to make it easy for us to access the files. They've built this place like a fortress."

"I know," I said, my gaze locked on the blinking lights of the core. "I saw it coming. But if we can take it out, we stop everything they've been working toward. We stop them from having control over any more of those... things."

Steve looked at me, his eyes hardening with resolve. "We'll make sure they never get to use it again."

Suddenly, the doors at the far end of the lab burst open, and more Hydra agents flooded into the room, weapons drawn. The air was filled with the sharp hiss of energy blasts and the rhythmic crack of gunfire. The fight wasn't over yet—not by a long shot. We'd made it this far, but it was clear Hydra wasn't going down without a fight.

"I'll cover the entrance!" Steve shouted, throwing his shield towards a group of advancing agents, sending them flying back with a single, well-placed blow.

"Stay focused on the core," Natalie called out, pulling out a small device from her jacket. She began hacking into the nearby terminal, her fingers dancing across the keys with lightning speed. "I'm disabling the fail-safe. It's going to take a minute, so don't let them get any closer."

As the Hydra soldiers charged forward, I found myself falling back into the rhythm of battle. I'd fought alongside Steve for years, and even though I wasn't the same person I used to be—no longer the Bucky Barnes who had fought with him during World War II—I could still feel the pull of that bond. We fought as one, side by side, like we had always done. Each blow I landed seemed to resonate with the memory of who I once was, and every time I saw Steve move with that fluid, precise efficiency, it reminded me of how far we had come together.

But this wasn't just about the fight. It was about survival. It was about making sure Hydra didn't win. They had taken too much from us already. They had turned people into machines, tortured and controlled them. I couldn't let that continue.

"Bucky, move!" Steve called out, throwing his shield to clear a path for me.

I snapped back to the present, my mind shaking off the ghosts of the past. The Hydra agents were closing in, their weapons trained on us, but I didn't hesitate. I charged forward, clearing a path for Steve and Natalie. My arm swung wide as I took down another Hydra agent with a swift strike. I moved like I had countless times before, but this time, there was something different. It wasn't just about the fight—it was about redemption. It was about finally making sure Hydra paid for what they'd done, for what they had created.

As the battle raged around us, Natalie's voice cut through the noise. "I'm almost in! Just a few more seconds!"

I felt the weight of everything on my shoulders—the years of pain, the memories of what Hydra had done to me and countless others. This was the moment. It was now or never.

"Bucky, it's done!" Natalie shouted, her face lighting up with a mix of relief and triumph. "The fail-safe is off. Now let's destroy the core before they bring in backup!"

I barely heard her as I moved toward the data core, my body a blur of motion. The Hydra agents were scattered, trying to regroup, but they were too late. I pulled out my remaining grenades, slamming them into the control panels and rigging the data core for destruction.

"We've got to move!" I shouted, already turning toward the exit.

Steve and Natalie followed, and we sprinted out of the lab, the sound of the explosion echoing behind us as the core collapsed into itself. The mission was a success, but there was no time for celebration.

As we ran down the hallway, the doors slammed shut behind us, locking the chaos inside. We made it to the exit, the weight of what we had just done starting to sink in. But the real fight wasn't over. Hydra would retaliate. They always did.

"Do you think we've really stopped them?" Natalie asked, her voice low as we made our way toward the surface. "I mean, we've destroyed their data, but they still have resources. They still have people."

"I don't know," Steve answered, his voice steady but filled with concern. "But we did what we had to do. We stopped their biggest weapon. We'll keep fighting until we stop them for good."

I glanced over at Steve, feeling the weight of his words. This wasn't over. But for the first time in a long time, I felt like we were one step closer to winning.

"Let's just hope it's enough," I said quietly, as we stepped into the night, knowing that this was just the beginning.
