Chapter 10 - The New Member

The morning sun filtered softly through the low-hanging clouds, casting a golden glow over the misty meadows of the cow farm. Steam still rose gently from the warm fields, and the distant moos of the nourishing women echoed like lullabies.

Renji stood near the farm gate, clothed again but feeling changed. Not just from the battle… but from her.

Nayya approached him slowly, her figure wrapped in a flowing robe of deep lavender, milk stains long gone but her glow unmistakable. She said nothing at first—just stood close, her gaze scanning his face, memorizing him.

He looked at her, a little shy now. "Thanks… for everything."

"You're welcome," she said, then leaned in and kissed his cheek. "Don't die before you find out who you really are."

Zach waited a few steps ahead, arms crossed, his silver hair catching the wind. "Done saying goodbye to your wet dream?" he called out with a cocky smirk.

Renji rolled his eyes. "Let's just go."

With one last glance behind him, he followed Zach down the winding trail leading away from the milky paradise and toward darker lands.

The road grew colder with every mile.

Gone were the lush, fertile plains. Now jagged rocks and ash-colored trees loomed from both sides, whispering with the eerie silence of old ghosts. They were walking into cursed lands—toward the Heart of the Dark Order.

By twilight, they reached a cliffside cave carved into the mountain's edge. The inside was dry and narrow, perfect for shelter.

Zach threw down his pack, summoned a small flame, and lit the fire pit with a flick of his finger.

Renji sat across from him, staring into the flames. The pendant around his neck still pulsed faintly, as if drawn toward their destination.

"Tomorrow," Zach said, voice low, "we step onto soil soaked in your family's blood."

Renji didn't flinch. "Good. I want to see it. I want to know."

The fire crackled. The shadows danced.

The fire crackled gently, casting long shadows across the jagged stone walls. Zach crouched near the flame, turning a skewered chunk of boar over the fire. The scent of roasted meat filled the cave, rich and mouthwatering. He glanced over his shoulder.

Renji had already curled into his blanket, the pendant resting on his chest, its faint red glow pulsing like a heartbeat. His breathing was steady, his body finally getting the rest it deserved.

Zach smirked to himself. "Kid's got a long road ahead. Might as well eat while we can."

But just as he reached for a finished cut of the roast—poof—the meat was gone.

Zach blinked.

A rustle. A scurry. A small shadow darted across the far edge of the cave. Renji stirred slightly but didn't wake.

Zach narrowed his eyes and stood. "Oi…"

He followed the scent trail and spotted something hiding behind a crumbled rock—cheeks stuffed full, fluffy tails twitching.

He lunged and caught it by the scruff.

"Gotcha!"

A small, muffled squeak answered him.

He pulled the shadow into the firelight.

Big, golden eyes blinked up at him. A soft face, cute and mischievous, framed by snow-white hair and two fluffy ears atop her head. She was tiny—maybe half Renji's size—and dressed in scrappy fur clothing, clearly stolen or handmade.

"A fox girl?" Zach muttered, surprised.

She growled at him, cheeks still full of stolen pork, then suddenly twisted and kicked him square in the jaw.

Zach stumbled back, stunned. "Ow! You little—!"

She stood triumphantly, hands on her hips, tail swishing like a banner of victory. "Hmph! That's what you get for grabbing a lady!"

Zach rubbed his jaw and laughed. "You've got guts, kid."

The little fox girl puffed her chest. "I've got nothing. No home. No clan. Just me."

Zach's smile softened. "Not anymore."

He tossed her a cooked rib. She caught it mid-air and began munching happily, tail wagging as she plopped down beside the fire.

"I guess you're coming with us," he muttered, glancing at Renji still sleeping peacefully.

The cave, once filled only with firelight and silence, now echoed with the soft chewing of a fox and the quiet laughter of a war-hardened warrior.

And in the darkness beyond… fate stirred again.

The fire dimmed to a soft glow, flickering like a dying star at the center of the cave. Renji remained fast asleep in the far corner, wrapped in dreams and destiny. Zach sat cross-legged by the fire, watching the little fox girl gnaw on a rib like a feral noble.

After a while, her chewing slowed. She hugged her knees, eyes reflecting the flames—quiet now.

"You mentioned a clan," Zach said, voice low.

She didn't answer right away.

Then, softly: "They were called the Moontail Tribe. Hidden in the frostwood valleys of the Northwest. We weren't warriors. Just farmers… and spirit-binders. We served the land, healed beasts, helped wandering exiles find their way."

Her fingers gripped her fur-lined shawl. "But the Light Order thought we were… corrupted. Said we channeled forbidden magic. So when the Northern Tribes refused to swear loyalty to them, they made us an example."

Zach's eyes hardened. "Slaughter?"

She nodded.

"They came during a snowstorm. First, they blinded our wolves… poisoned the wind. Then the fire fell from the sky—some priest cast a holy rain that burned flesh. My mother told me to run, to hide under the root-caves, deep where the Light couldn't reach."

Her voice cracked. "When I came out… there was no tribe left. Just silence. And ash."

Zach looked away, jaw clenched.

She sniffed once, wiped her eyes with the back of her hand, and tried to smile. "Been running ever since. Stealing to eat. Hiding in old tunnels. But the Light still hunts survivors. Even now."

Zach tossed a log onto the fire, sparks flying into the darkness. "Then you stay with us. That light won't reach you while I'm breathing."

The fox girl blinked at him, stunned. "You… mean that?"

He nodded. "What's your name, fox?"

"…Mira," she whispered. "Just Mira."

He smiled faintly. "Alright, Mira. Welcome to the madness."

Outside, the wind howled like a beast. But in the cave, there was warmth—and now, something like family.
