Chapter 8 - A Tree

Luis had no worries in this Undead form as its strength was far greater than his level.

He walked in the compound, looking for traces of monsters.

If he could, he hoped to encounter a Level 4 monster to increase his experience quickly.

In the city, Level 4 Monsters could still be found and they were usually the true bosses of other monsters.

"Ohhh, since when is there such a big tree?"

Luis was surprised as he walked around, seeing a tree that was up to a hundred meters tall with many branches full of leaves.

It was behind a house.

Every day in this compound, there was hardly anything he didn't remember.

He remembered the details including the trees.

Although there were indeed many large trees behind people's houses, none were so large as to be 100 meters tall.

Of course, this kind of difference was not strange between the Real World and Apocalypse World.

Even here, all the houses were filled with vines.

However, Luis was still curious.

He stepped towards the tree, passing through the small gap beside the houses.

Behind, there was still a large area that was empty but full of tall grass.

The big tree was about fifty meters away from him.

He approached it slowly, worried that some danger might suddenly appear.

"Who are you? Get out of here!"

He hadn't arrived yet and suddenly there was a loud noise echoing in front of him.

Before he could react, he suddenly saw a huge snake appear in front of him, standing like a king cobra.

His eyes widened somewhat when he saw the snake whose body was as thick as a skyscraper pillar while its length was hard to measure.

It was so long that he couldn't tell where its tail was.

Luis doubted if he was really a Level 4 monster. It was possible that it was at Level 5.

If there was such a monster here, it wouldn't be strange if the other monsters were afraid to come.

Of course, it was still strange because a monster like this within the city should be the target of many Awakeners.

Luis tried to peek at what exactly was behind the snake, but the snake was smarter than he thought.

It shielded his view with its body.

"Boy, you better get out of here. Otherwise, the consequences are not something you can bear," the snake said again.

In terms of voice, it sounded more like a woman's.

At this point, Luis was finally made to realize that this monster could speak.

Monsters basically wouldn't be able to speak except at very high levels.

At the lower levels, it was still possible if they were monsters owned by Beast Masters who were swamped since childhood.

Their brains being connected to human brains makes them grow up to be intelligent like humans.

Now, it was quite clear that this snake belonged to someone who was probably assigned to guard something.

If that person did have influence, naturally the other Awakeners would not dare to interfere.

'Is it that guy?'

Luis thought of Walker but then he shook his head.

That man was a Velos resident and Velos residents were not influential enough whoever they were to make the others afraid.

Only residents of the Flying Star Empire could do that.

From the looks of it, it was the tree that the snake was guarding.

Despite knowing that he wasn't supposed to do anything here, the curiosity-filled Luis couldn't help but stir up a sense of greed.

Coupled with the fact that he hated the people of the empire, he was only more eager to steal something that belonged to one of them.

As long as his identity was not revealed, it did not matter at all.

"Hehehe..."

He laughed then pointed his hand forward quickly.

Whoosh!

From his hand emerged a black chain that faintly emitted white light that seemed to be filled with the souls of the dead.

If observed, the chain seemed like an illusion, yet it gave the impression of intense danger.

It enlarged and moved quickly towards the snake.

And the snake could only be startled, having no time to dodge.

The chain wrapped around its body and then entered its body without making any damage at all.

Of course, that didn't put the snake at ease.

Its eyes widened and then glared at Luis.

"How dare you, boy!" It yelled before suddenly lunging at him.

At this moment, Luis could feel that it was holding its soul and he could pull it out.

Only, although it was said that he could pull out his enemy's soul as long as he caught them, the degree of ease would depend on the enemy's strength.

If the enemy was strong enough, it wouldn't be so easy.

He found that the snake's soul was extremely heavy to pull.

The snake was clearly trying to keep its soul from leaving its body as that would mean its death.

'Looks like I'll have to injure it first,' Luis thought.

BANG!

His body released an explosive sound as death energy radiated from him, instantly making vegetation that came into contact with that energy die by rotting.

However, the snake that lunged at him didn't back down.

Perhaps it underestimated his death energy, thinking it was like that of an ordinary undead.

Buzz!

When it entered his death energy, its scales were instantly torn apart, revealing its red flesh that looked like steel.

The snake was instantly taken aback. It had high defenses yet its scales were easily destroyed.

Not stopping there, its flesh even began to rot.

Whoosh!

Luis jumped high into the air to avoid the snake's lunge.

He apparently easily jumped up to a height of 50 meters.

From there, he could finally see the bottom of the tree clearly, a sight that quite shocked him.

The tree was actually not fused to the ground. It grew from a large seed that faintly emitted a green glow.

Its roots were not fused to the ground at all.

They just lay like branches that had fallen but were still connected to the big tree.
