Chapter 4 - Jaskier The Man Eater

A summon? The words from the text jumped out to me. I rubbed my mighty dragon belly.

I let out a small roar of triumph as a flame erupted from my breath. My sister gave me a side glance as she mimicked me and let out a cute roar that followed mine.

The birds on the treetops flew off quickly, causing branches and leaves to fall around us.

Of course, as the older sibling, I couldn't resist the urge to coddle her, as my hand naturally moved to pat her head.

She pushed my hand with her head and nuzzled into it, her eyes shining as she received my head pats, her tail wagging in delight

What an adorable Lizard, it seemed to like to revel in praise.

How could two little Lizards eat so much and have nothing to show for? I glanced at my dragon belly and saw no bulge. Where was this in my past life? I truly envied the ability to eat so much but grow so little.

Of course, in my previous life, I was skinny like a skeleton and couldn't afford to eat much anyway.

Even with it not showing, the deer still proved to be a nice little snack; my thoughts slowly shifted back to the topic of summons.

In the only game I used to play, the players were called summoners, and they summoned someone to fight for them.

Was the concept similar here? It looked like not every creature here could be summoned, seeing that the rabbit's description didn't mention the word.

Could we be summoned? I didn't have a way to check my description, so I devised the next best thing.

I looked at my sister and squinted my eyes hard. I tried to summon up the text with all my might, but it was strange to try to do something that came naturally. It was like telling someone they had to blink manually.

No matter how hard I squinted, nothing showed up. I kept on squinting until I felt a rumble in my stomach.

Question marks started to appear near the top of her head, but the text quickly failed, and instead I was greeted with something far stranger.

[Congratulations! You have unlocked Dragon's Eye.]

[By concentrating magic in your eyes, you can see the truths of the world, nothing can be hidden from a dragon's eye, the karma of the individual is formed in lines of our ancient tongue, easily readable to a dragon - Ancient Scohlar Dragon Jareal]

[Tiamat] [???] [???]

That was certainly strange, as much as I tried to see past the question marks, it felt like something was interfering with my vision. I swore I could almost hear the sound of something screaming.

The text I saw now and the text I saw before were wildly different, one was written in English and the other in Draconic tongue.

While one seemed straight out of a game, and the other seemed to fit with the world.

The sensation of using what I could only assume was magic was strange; it felt nothing like using my dragon's breath, the difference being one, happened as naturally as breathing.

In fact, I felt as if something was taken away from me, albeit temporarily. This is what I think is my mana.

It was moments like these that made me wish my inheritance was more detailed.

Like ways to use or gather mana, but since it came naturally to a dragon, it explained the laziness that came with being a dragon.

The fact that I couldn't read the information of my sister wasn't all that strange, seeing as information from our parents was blocked, and the fact we were born in a hole as if we were just poofed into existence.

The small hole that introduced the sunlight did little to prove we were born from a parent.

Something foul was at hand, but I had no intention of getting to the bottom of it. Even if I could, what could this little Lizard do?

So, my thoughts shifted into the present. A quarter of the way into this forest, and the most we encountered was a deer. A fire-breathing deer nonetheless, but a deer. It was safe to assume there wasn't much that could pose a threat in the vicinity.

I knew how unlucky saying something like that was, but I felt like Lady Luck was smiling upon this life.

Was that the natural arrogance of a Dragon speaking? Not even two days old, and I was already declaring my supremacy. I had to curb this way of thinking, knowing that this world contained creatures that could be summoned; it was pure arrogance to think we were at the apex.

I tried to halt my rising arrogance and started thinking rationally. The only reason why a carnivorous deer would attack the young of any species is that it never encountered one that fought back as well as a dragon.

But while dragons had high ceilings and high floors, there were creatures with weak beginnings but strong endings.

I didn't think that applied here, but it never hurt to think cautiously, the worst that could happen was being tensed for nothing, and the best was being crowned the ruler of this forest.

As much as I wanted to hold my head up high and declare myself king of this forest, I remained on the floor. As it stood, we were halfway to the mountains.

I looked at my sister, who was still in the middle of getting her head patted, my dragon hand was quickly removed.

She made little dragon disappointed noises.

Unfortunately, I had to steel my nerves and not give in.

Why was my hand moving by itself?

Okay fine, one last pat.

After thirty minutes of playing around with my sister, we finally started to move again, the trees got bigger, and the vegetation wilder, as we got closer to the center.

We occasionally found animals that quickly scurried away, but as mildly satisfied dragons, there was no reason to chase.

I nodded at my morally upright sister, who walked behind me with a grace that couldn't even be found in a human king.

I turned back to the front before continuing my pace. The scent of something sweet entered my nose. I looked around and spotted some fruit. I was not hungry, so I didn't grab any, but I marked the location in my head for later.

As we got closer to our destination, my skin started to crawl; the expression didn't really fit as I was covered in scales, but the sense that something was wrong was drilled into my head.

I had a feeling that we were being surrounded, so I put my mighty dragon hand in front of my sister, who had already stopped.

I looked back at her and she nodded, probably sensing the same thing.

A howl came over from behind me.

I quickly turned to look as more howls followed, a pack of wolves started to appear out of the bushes as they gradually encircled us.

Weren't wolves nocturnal? I guess I couldn't apply the rules of my reality to a world that screamed fantasy.

[Moon-Swallowing Wolf Lvl.7]

[Legend dictates, of a Wolf so Large it once swallowed a Moon; the moon-swallowing wolves are said to descend from Jules, The Wolf Who Swallowed The Moon. Usually found in a snowy biome, they hunt in packs at night and never take more than they can eat. The blood of the god of the moon is rumored to be running through their veins. Another rumor suggests they were made in tandem with the Sun-Swallowing wolves, both created by the Sun and Moon gods. An excellent summon for a decent Summoner.]

I squinted my eyes, channeling magic in them. I activated my dragon eye, and the same content showed up, except for the Level, causing me to feel a bit disappointed.

It meant any person who acquired Dragon's eye could see what I saw.

I looked at the wolves once more, they were snow white, with a hint of black fur in their coat, a sort of gray followed around their neck like a collar, their eyes were crescents that resembled a crescent moon, I could see why they were called Moon-Swallowing wolves, the crescent moon in their eyes looked as if it was bitten.

My eyes were attracted to what I assumed to be the alpha, it was not only way larger, but it was vastly different, instead of white fur, it had brown fur mixed with white, its pupils were a burning sun that seemed to be bitten.

The text was immediately displayed.

[Jaskier, The Man Swallowing Wolf Lvl.15]

[Once a summon of Kyce, The One-eyed-summoner. Jaskier was known as the Sun-Swallowing Wolf, although it was never confirmed he boasted of being directly descended from Jale The Wolf Who Swallowed The Sun. Kyce was a local legend, his popularity elevated the popularity of his summon, who grew a nasty attitude. But while his personality was awful his skill was not, Kyce inspired a trend, of novice summoners contracting with Sun-Swallowing wolves, when Kyce started using other summons more, the jealous wolf swallowed his contractor, the act of killing your contractor was taboo, since that time the once Proud Sun Wolf, was banished to his home, forever going down in history as The Man Swallowing wolf]

The big wolf sneered, displaying its teeth, as it opened its mouth to speak.

"A dragon here?" The wolf snarled, its voice dripping with venom as it licked its lips. A hungry look arrived in his golden eyes.

It flashed its teeth once more, before looking up into the direction of the sun. It started to howl, as its fanatic voice rang out.

"Has my ancestor blessed me? I-i-I K-kne-W they w-o-Ould Not for-sake me fo-ooOr l-ong" Its voice trembled at it broke into a malicious grin, saliva dripping from his giant teeth.

It licked its lips, "I have e-e-eaten plenty of-oof t-h-h-things but never a-a-a Dragon." Its trembling stopped as it inched closer, its head dropping as low as its voice.

"I would never have fought a young dragon, but..." He paused once more, his grin widening, "A baby I.. Could... do..." He spoke his words slowly and lowered his voice like a whisper, as he started to make his way towards us.

A hint of rage blossomed in my chest. How could this mutt disrespect, what is a dragon? Did he not understand my majesty? A low growl escaped my lips, I would teach it.

But as quickly as the fire burned, it was snuffed out by another feeling. It was like two sides of a coin were warring with each other, my dragon side was fighting with my dragon side. As strange as it sounded, the natural pride of a Dragon was fighting the weird sense of righteous indignation that came with the new life.

Do not be angry with a lower form of life, the phrase seemed to repeat itself in my head. Do not be angry at the ignorant; instead, display their wrongs with the dignity befitting of a dragon.

But as both sides of the coin were dragons, the thought of a wolf daring to swallow a dragon was enough for the rage to win, the once smothered ashes blazed with the intensity that a sun could not match.

[HE DARES!]

Much to my surprise, the voice that came out was not my own but my sister's.

My sister growled out, unlike myself, whose inner instinct was at war with itself; her nature seemed to lie in another direction.

Unbridled and unrestrained. Acting as one would want, now that truly was what I envisioned a dragon to be.

And so, with the same fury as my sister, I also spoke in a tone that I would have never fathomed before.

[YOU DARE.]

It was time to teach a mutt, why it wasn't called a Dragon-Swallowing wolf.
