Chapter 11 - ELEVEN: HEART OF THE PACK

The tension in the room grew thick, like a storm hanging overhead, waiting to break. Derrick's mind raced as he turned toward the source of the crackling noise. His heart pounded in his chest, every instinct telling him that something was dangerously wrong. Silas, however, stood there, grinning like a wolf who had cornered its prey, his cold eyes flicking from Derrick to Adeline.

Adeline's pulse quickened as the air thickened with the scent of a growing, palpable threat. She had never seen Derrick this enraged. His normally composed demeanor was now unraveling, like a thread pulled too taut. But it wasn't just the anger on his face that unnerved her; it was the sorrow—something deeper, something almost broken. As if he were facing a battle he couldn't win.

"Don't be so naive, Derrick," Silas taunted, his voice oozing malice. "This isn't just about the pack. It's about power, control. And Adeline—" He let the words hang in the air, his eyes glinting darkly, "—she's going to be mine."

Adeline's blood ran cold as the realization hit her. She had already understood that Silas had his sights set on the pack, but now he was aiming at something far more dangerous. He wasn't just a threat to Derrick's position as alpha; he was a threat to her life, her freedom, her very being.

"She's not a pawn for you to use," Derrick snapped, his eyes flashing with something primal, something protective. The transformation in his expression, the sheer force of his emotions, was more terrifying than the most violent werewolf attack. He was a man who could lose everything to protect her.

"Isn't she?" Silas's grin grew wider. "You don't understand, do you, Derrick? Adeline is the key. She's connected to the heart of this pack, more than either of us realized. She has power—latent power, untapped potential. That's why she has to be mine."

Adeline felt a chill crawl up her spine, a shiver of dread running through her. What did he mean by that? Was it her heritage, something her grandmother had left unsaid, that had made her such an important figure in this pack?

"Don't listen to him, Adeline," Derrick said, his voice softer, yet fierce with a warning. "He's trying to manipulate you, trying to turn you against everything this pack stands for."

But Silas wasn't done. He stepped forward, ignoring Derrick entirely now, his focus entirely on Adeline. "You have no idea, do you? You've been living in the dark about your heritage, your connection to this world. But I know. I've known for years, and I've watched you, waiting for the moment when the truth would finally be revealed." He smiled, a cruel, calculating look in his eyes. "You're not just some innocent girl, Adeline. You're a key. And in the right hands, you'll bring more power to this pack than you could ever imagine."

The words rang out in the quiet of the room, hanging in the air like poison. Adeline felt her knees weaken under the weight of Silas's gaze. What was he saying? Was there something about her that she didn't know? Was this why she had been drawn here to this place, to this pack?

Derrick stepped forward, cutting off Silas's approach. His anger surged, his voice low and dangerous, "You don't understand. You will never understand, Silas. I'm not going to let you do this."

But Silas only laughed, a cold, wicked sound. "You really think you can protect her, Derrick? You've been blind to everything. The truth is, she doesn't belong to you. She belongs to the pack, and I intend to make her my mate—whether she likes it or not."

Adeline took a step back, her heart racing. Derrick's eyes were fixed on Silas, but his hand subtly reached for her, his fingers brushing hers, grounding her in the moment. He was protective, and she could feel the heat from his touch as if he was shielding her from Silas's dangerous words. Yet, there was a growing unease inside her—a fear of being controlled by forces she didn't fully understand.

Derrick's gaze softened, though the fierce tension remained. "You don't have the right to claim her, Silas. No matter what you think, Adeline isn't just some tool you can use to further your own power. She is my mate. I will fight to protect her."

Silas's face twisted in fury, his eyes flashing with the violence of a cornered animal. "You still don't get it, do you? You're too weak to lead. You always have been. This isn't just about me. It's about the future of the pack, and Adeline is a key player in that future. Without her, you'll never be able to hold onto what little power you have left."

Adeline's heart pounded in her chest as she looked between the two men. The love in Derrick's eyes was undeniable, but Silas's words gnawed at her, stirring something deep inside her. What did he mean? How could she be so important to the pack's future? She had only just begun to understand what it meant to be a part of this world, let alone a pivotal force within it.

"I don't want to be anyone's pawn," Adeline said softly, but with fierce conviction. She looked up at Derrick, her voice steady despite the storm raging inside her. "I don't want to be controlled by anyone—not by Silas, and not by anyone in this pack."

Derrick's jaw clenched, but his gaze softened as he looked at her. "You're not a pawn, Adeline," he said fiercely, his voice full of determination. "You're my mate. And I won't let anyone use you. Not Silas, not anyone."

The room fell silent for a moment, the tension still thick, but now with a new understanding. Derrick's words hung in the air, heavy with the weight of his promise.

But Silas wasn't finished. "We'll see about that," he sneered, before turning and storming out of the room, leaving a silence in his wake that was deafening.

Adeline stood there, still shaken, but now with a new clarity. She had been pulled into a world that was so much bigger than her. The history, the power struggles, and the tension between the brothers—it all felt so overwhelming. And yet, in the midst of it all, there was one thing that felt certain: Derrick. He was her protector, her mate, and he was willing to fight for her, no matter the cost.

Derrick exhaled slowly, turning to face her fully. His eyes softened as they met hers. "I'm sorry, Adeline. I never wanted to drag you into this world. You deserve peace, not this madness."

Adeline shook her head. "I don't know what I deserve anymore. But I know one thing—I don't want to be a tool. Not for Silas, not for anyone. I have to understand this. All of it. I have to know what's going on."

Derrick nodded, his expression grave. "I'll protect you, Adeline. But you're right. We need answers. And I'll make sure you get them. We'll figure this out together."

But just as he said that, the sound of a distant howl echoed through the night air—low, mournful, and full of warning. Derrick's eyes snapped to the window, his expression hardening.

"That was a call to arms," he said, his voice low and filled with concern. "Silas is rallying the pack. We need to be ready."

Adeline's heart skipped a beat as she looked at him, fear mixing with the need to be strong. "What do we do now?"

Derrick's hand clenched at his side. "We fight. Together."

The howl rang out again, this time closer, louder—more urgent. Derrick's eyes narrowed as he prepared for whatever was to come. And in that moment, Adeline realized the stakes had just risen. This wasn't just about power—it was about survival.
