Cherreads

Chapter 2 - Encounter

Today is much colder, or maybe I'm just getting tired

I wrap my scarf around my neck and head out of the rundown grocery store I've been living in, I need to find supplies I don't know why I still bother keeping a journal, I doubt anyone is going to read it anyway, the city is pretty much a ghost town

I keep walking, hoping to find something, I saw an old warehouse near the river, maybe there are supplies there, or maybe it has already been picked clean, doesn't matter.

The only food left in the store is a few cans of beans and some stale crackers, they won't last the week, as I head toward the warehouse, I hear something, I'm not sure if I should check it out, what if it's people?

But I can't take that risk, if it's a Coldling, I'll be in serious trouble

I stop and crouch behind a car, peeking over it and I see a human-like figure, and as it steps out of the shadows, I realize it's not a Coldling, it's a scavenger. I don't know if i should approach. I decide not to, but as I'm walking back, I accidentally step on a piece of glass and it shatters, making a loud noise I think to myself, oh shit I peek over the car again and see the scavenger heading toward me I sigh and think, might as well just introduce myself  I get up, hands raised

"I don't have a weapon."

The scavenger looks at me, then scans the area, "Are you alone?"

I nod. "Yes."

He looks at me suspiciously. "What are you doing here?"

"I was trying to get to the warehouse near the river."

He sighs. "Don't bother. I've already been there...unless you're looking for empty cans."

I look down, disappointed. Then look back at him. He seems to be thinking about something.

After a moment, he looks at me. "If you've survived this long, you might be useful."

I frown, confused. "What do you mean?"

"We've got a group camped in a department store a that's relatively close."

I smile. "Really? Can I join? I've been all alone this whole time it'd be nice to see actual people again."

He gives a subtle nod. "Sure. But I need to talk to the others before we accept you. They might ask some questions."

After this encounter, he leads me to a car that actually works. Then he asks me questions about how I survived this long. I answer him, "I don't know..I guess I got lucky." Eventually, we reach the department store.
