Chapter 12 - Great Horror

The entrance to the hole was pretty wide.

A person could easily enter it.

But Kev couldn't determine its depth.

He also couldn't make out what was on the other side of the hole.

It was too dark.

The room's light wasn't bright enough to pierce through the hole.

He had to rely on his flashlight.

He got close to the hole and sat down on one knee. His posture was similar to a knight kneeling before his lord.

From this distance, the disturbing scent coming from the area past the hole became detectable. Kev's nose twisted in disgust as he picked up the putrid stench of Rot and Decay.

'Whatever is ahead, it's not going to be easy to digest.'

Kev thought before he forcibly suppressed his disgust and continued his investigation, turning on his flashlight before positioning it in such a way that the bright beam of white light flashing out of it would shine inside the hole

The hole's depth became clear. It was ten feet deep. There wasn't a single spot where it was dangerously narrow. He could go through it with his items and backpack. The iron-clad giant had done a meticulous job while digging it. Kev had to give it that.

The flashlight was strong. Its beam shot past the hole, illuminating a tunnel.

Kev couldn't tell how long or wide it was. The light from his flashlight didn't reach far enough to reveal its end, and from his angle, it was hard to get a good view of it.

Suddenly, he heard a noise.

It sounded a lot like footsteps.

His gaze focused on the direction from where the footsteps originated, but he couldn't see who they belonged to.

They had erupted from the part of the tunnel that was submerged in darkness.

But Kev felt it would soon become clear who it was, as the footsteps drew closer and closer.

Suddenly, the noises disappeared.

Whoever it was has stopped at the edge of darkness, just an inch beyond the effective range of his flashlight.

"Stop playing games and come out!" Kev roared.

Suddenly, the noises disappeared.

Whoever it was had stopped at the edge of darkness, just an inch beyond the effective range of his flashlight.

"Stop playing games and come out!" Kev roared.

Then he was given the jumpscare of his life.

"Gah!"

With a roar that sounded like it came from the depths of hell, a black shadow leaped out of the hole.

It was a rotting corpse, with tumors and fungal growths all over its body. Its wretched existence was made more terrifying by its physique, which was as tall and sturdy as the iron-clad giant Kev had killed right after arriving in the alien space. Its eyes burned with a fervent desire that made Kev feel like prey before a predator.

It entered the hole that led to the room just as Kev stumbled back in shock.

His reaction was understandable.

He was seeing something that should only exist in horror movies and dramas!

Who else was he supposed to react?

Anyone in his shoes would behave similarly.

Gah!

It hastily crawled through the hole to get to him.

Kev watched it all happen in stunned silence.

His fight-or-flight response was triggered as he felt endangered.

He was a born fighter.

So naturally he chose to fight!

His hand went for the gun strapped to his waist and pulled it out in one smooth motion.

"How dare a dead thing consider me its prey?"

He felt enraged.

"Die, you beast!"

He slapped the safety off and pressed the trigger.

A bullet flew out, striking the creature in its shoulder.

However, it only caused it to stagger for a moment.

It felt no pain, it resumed its dreadful approach with saliva dripping from its mouth.

As it came closer, Kev backed away, but he didn't stop shooting.

"Die! Die! Die!"

The trigger was pulled repeatedly and bullets flew across the air, striking the moving, ravenous corpse in its legs and groin.

Its family jewels were destroyed for good, and multiple holes were drilled into its legs.

Pus and black blood flowed out from the moving corpse's wounds, but since when did an injury of such scale matter to the dead?

It did nothing to stop its advance!

Despite the damage done, It remained completely unbothered.

Its injuries didn't matter to it.

Only its insatiable hunger did, and it knew what would satisfy it.

The flesh and blood of the living.

Devour the human before it alive. That was the only thought in its mind, and its actions reflected that.

By this point, it became painfully clear to Kev that he couldn't win this battle with brute force unless he exhausted one of his trump card. He didn't think it could survive an explosion. But he only had a handful of gernades. He didn't want to put them to use so soon after arriving in the abyss. Who knows what danger he would face next in this accursed place!

He settled on dealing with it in the same way he defeated the iron-clad giant.

He was going to exploit its weakness!
