Most of the paperwork that needed to be done was on Marcus's side, but some she had to do.
It was mostly simple stuff like minor details from the dream, but a lot of the normal processes didn't apply to Charlotte's unique situation.
After a while, everything that needed to be done was done, and Marcus led her out of the room.
"Now, you've got two choices- either go back to living your normal life, or join the GSC- actually, wait, do you know what we are?"
Charlotte nodded.
"Government sanctioned contractors."
Marcus repeated the gesture.
"Yep. Depending on what powers a contractor has, we assign you to different departments. Calculation contractors assess risks of things, from making contact with a potential contractor to architecture and engineering."
They entered an elevator.
"A lot of places ended up being too flimsy to deal with contractors and rogue gods, so quite a lot of civilisation ended up getting a renovation after they popped up. Next, there are the production contractors. They can make tools, weapons, buildings, materials, and more. There's the combat contractors, which deal with contractors and stray gods themselves, and lastly there are the miscellaneous ones. We're not quite sure where to put you, so we're offloading the decision to our researchers in the miscellaneous division."
Marcus opened the door to a room. No- it wasn't quite a room as much as it was a warehouse crossed with a corridor. Three stories high, it was littered with smaller rooms full of people on either side, all doing different things.
As they walked by, Charlotte watched curiously at the varied things everyone was doing. Most were doing some sort of research, from some tired woman doing a pointless dance trying to manipulate a Mexican hat potential in the 'quantum manipulation through coordinated dance' room, to a man desperately trying to figure out how to isolate a weird clear pearl from a plant like organism in the 'Pearl collection' room to a group of people sighing a bit more each time their survey produced unexpected results in the 'Predicting stupidity' room.
Eventually, they reached a room with the name 'independant review of human enlightenment' written in something that looked like sharpie directly on the window.
"We made a department just for you, about five minutes ago- so not everybody's here yet."
Said Marcus, sitting down in a chair.
The room was clean, but messy. A long bench wrapped around the edges of the room, and the middle of the room was mostly bookshelves. They were empty except for the one closest to the door, which was half full of dusty books pertaining to subjects that vaguely related to attaining godhood. They were, however, very dusty- and looked a bit too old to be touched carelessly.
There were two other people here so far- a young girl that looked around Charlotte's age, wearing a white lab coat accepted with navy stripes. Her hair was short, and took on a color not dissimilar from the accents on her coat. Next to her sat and elderly man, but his eyes betrayed the fact that his intelligence had most certainly not dimmed with age. He was dressed in a similar lab coat, but it had more wear. He had thin rimmed glasses and still had a full head of hair, although it was a pale white. He spoke first.
"Nice to meet you, Charlotte. My name is Ivan, and I'm contracted with the furnace god. I was previously part of the GSC combat sector, and then part of the GSC production sector. Now I'm here. I'll be helping you with finding any things you can do now, helping you understand them, and making you any particular thing you need- or at least introducing you to someone who can." He said with a chuckle. The young lady spoke up after, saying:
"Nice to meet you, I'm Ina, I'm a calculator contractor, contracted with the split personality god- ah- don't worry, I'm one me, just lets me multitask really well. Um.. yep. Nice to meet you. I'll be helping with budgeting, figuring out whether something's good, and that sort of thing."
She had a habit of correcting her glasses really often, since one of her nose pads broke off.
"Nice to meet you too."
Charlotte responded, still not knowing what the purpose of this place is.
As if to answer her thought, another voice chimed in-
"We're here to help you with convenience, and for you to help us with your understandings. You're the first human ever to become a god, so the budgeting boys upstairs are very happy to give you a few people to make your life all happy."
It was said by a tall woman, and Charlotte had felt her stare before.
"My name's Haylene, by the way. Combat supporter, contracted with the transport god. I run the traffic."
"Very nice to meet you all, but I can't help. You'll die."
Charlotte said. She knew something like this would happen sooner or later- humanity's thirst for knowledge had been their driving force for as long as they had been around. But gods' knowledge wasn't something they could just learn.
"We know. That's why we're doing something similar to what happened to you, just much nicer. We plan on forcing the evolution of the brain."
