Chapter 23 - When Kings Slip

Dominic paced his dark office, eyes fixed on the download bar.

98%. 99%. Complete.

He grinned.

"What a shame," he said aloud, sipping black coffee like it was champagne. "All that power, and Nancy still couldn't keep her secrets safe."

He opened the file.

And that's when the screen went white.

ERROR: TRACE ENGAGED. LOCATION EXPOSED.

Dominic's smile vanished.

"...You've got to be kidding me."

Meanwhile – Carter & Co. Operations Hub

Nancy and Adrian stood over Mia's shoulder as the code lit up.

"He took the bait," Mia confirmed. "We've got his signal. Scrambling encryption now, and... yes. We've got his location pinged."

Adrian leaned forward. "Where?"

Mia turned her monitor.

"Lower East Side. Old warehouse listed under a fake import company."

Nancy's eyes sharpened.

"That's where we end this."

---

Two Hours Later – At the Warehouse

The air smelled like rust and bad decisions.

Nancy walked in first, flanked by two lawyers and a very annoyed Mia who had clearly wanted to bring a Taser.

Adrian was right behind them, his expression unreadable.

Dominic appeared from the shadows, unbothered. "Wow. You brought a whole entourage. Cute."

Nancy didn't blink. "You downloaded classified documents from my system and framed me for fraud. Cute doesn't cover it."

Dominic gave a slow, mocking clap. "I underestimated you."

"You underestimated us," Adrian said, stepping forward. "This isn't about my family or your grudge. You went after the wrong person."

Dominic's smile turned thin. "Funny. You sound like you actually care."

Adrian looked at Nancy, then back at him.

"I do."

Nancy froze. It was the first time he'd said that out loud. And somehow, even with all the fire and fury in the room, the words hit harder than anything.

---

Back at Carter & Co. – 3 AM

They'd handed the location and evidence to the authorities. Dominic was now the one under investigation.

Nancy dropped her bag on the office couch and slumped down beside it.

Adrian stood at the window, arms crossed, watching the city lights flicker below.

"So..." he said. "Still want a divorce?"

Nancy leaned her head back and sighed. "Honestly? I just want pancakes and sleep."

Adrian turned. "You like pancakes?"

She cracked one eye open. "What kind of monster doesn't?"

He smiled. "You know... I make a mean midnight pancake."

Nancy gave a tired smirk. "Prove it."

Adrian grabbed his coat. "Come on, Carter. Let's see if we can find you syrup and peace in the same place."
