Chapter 1 - Chapter 1: Rebirth

I'm what you would call, Average

I lead a normal life, fairly routine if you ask me. My days consist of: Going to my college class, Clocking into work, Eating, And sleeping, then the next day is just a rinse and repeat.

I have friends, just not a whole lot..

If I'm being honest, I dreaded this lifestyle. I want money, a lot of friends, and to go out drinking. Hell, I even want a girlfriend if that's not too much to ask for. All of this stuff isn't too much to ask for too.

I'm a fairly decent looking guy, I'm Tall (around 6 '0) I have brown hair paired with brown eyes (Japanese American), I often wear a mean scowl naturally so that probably intimidates people.. sometimes. But the reason I can't make these things happen is not because I can't, but It's because I choose not to. People are scary.. I spend most of my days either working, studying, or sleeping. I never took the time to go out and make friends, talk to girls, or none of that.

My fairly average life was cut short due to an unwarranted accident. I was headed onto the college campus one morning to pick up some papers from my professor and a semi came hurling towards me as I was crossing on the crosswalk.

It felt as though everything slowed down, I could feel the semi hit me in slow motion, contorting my body and breaking bones as I flew back from the impact of the hit.

I didn't die trying to valiantly save some high school girl getting hit by a truck, or being a hero of any kind, It basically happened out of nowhere.

My last thoughts before I 'died' was:

"This is a scene straight out of an isekai manga!"

I was still conscious as cars stopped around me and people tried to call paramedics to save me.

Is this it, Will I be transported to another world surrounded by hot chicks!?

I entertained the thought.

As I began to see light my heart jumped with excitement to see the new world I was reborn into! However that excitement was short lived as I heard the beeping of a heart monitor and dim hospital lights hanging over my head.

"You're awake, Junichi Asai!" The doctor stood over my hospital bed holding a clipboard.

I let out a low groan as I looked around.

"I need to inform you, unfortunately you were hit by a Semi-Truck." The doctor formed a grim look on his face.

"I know that much genius!"

I barked at the doctor.

"Yeah.. As a result of the impact you won't be able to walk, assuming you survive the mountain of other injuries you have."

Other injuries and survival in the same sentence!?

My heart jumped with excitement!

So my chance of being reborn into another world surrounded by hot chicks isn't zero!

I let out another low grunt, incentivizing him to read off my injuries.

"Right, it seems your brain is bleeding, very little, and with your life insurance plan it appears that you won't be able to pay for the proper treatment, and that alone you'll likely die from, along with the ribs puncturing your organs that we could barely fix for you to be with us here now, It's honestly a miracle that you can even speak right now. All you can do now is wait for the sweet embrace of death, I'm sorry but that's what has to happen.. Or I could pull the plug now to speed things up."

The doctor monologue.

I nodded my head frantically.

"So be it.. Do you have anyone you'd like to say your goodbyes to?"

I thought about it.. And now that I think about it: I don't. I've lived a sorry life up until now, I hardly have any friends that would even notice if I died, my parents hate my guts and are better off without me, I have no girlfriend, no loved ones, not even a pet to remember me once I'm gone.

Just thinking about it brought me down.

I turned to the doctor and shook my head slowly.

"So be it." The doctor slowly walked over and pulled the plug.

I died relatively quickly after that. I guess I was more injured than I thought. I thought I'd experience some sort of pain like my organs collapsing or something like that, but it was quick which is nice I suppose.

I awoke in a dark room, it was like I was floating at the bottom of the sea, however I could breathe just fine. Almost better than if I were standing on the street or something. Standing in front of me was this creature.. It had the eyes of a dragon, It was bigger than I was, however It had the presence of a human being.

"Junichi Asai." It said, bearing a deep ominous voice.

"And who are you..?" my voice sounded drowned out as though I was under water

The creature groaned

"My use for you hasn't ceased just yet."

"What do you mean?"

"I am recycling your mind, essentially you are being brought to another world. This isn't the last time we're going to cross paths."

"Do I-"

I was cut off

It felt like I was being yanked away from him and I woke up crying, being coddled by a woman who I'd assume is my mother.

She had blue eyes and black hair, she had a soft look on her face as though she were tearing up

I looked over to my right to see a man too, he was pretty tall (6 '4) and he had Brown hair with green eyes. He had a stern, serious look on his face. I would only assume he's my father.

I was a mix of the 2, I had brown hair and blue eyes.

The man spoke in a foreign language, the only words I could make out was "Stella" which I'd assume is my mothers name

My mother spoke in return and the words I could make out was Nolan which would be my fathers name

Not long after they eventually said my name:

Otto Von Blaire

Which meant my mother was Stella Von Blaire and my father was Nolan Von Blaire

I was blessed with a pretty good name, I'm not complaining. It definitely has some oomph behind it, something you can remember. Like the name of a valiant hero who saved the world from some evil leader.

2 Short years have passed making me 2 years old, and I picked up the language of this world, It's called Vistarian. It's from the land of Vistaria. Which is part of a larger continent surrounding 2 continents. It's really confusing, there are 3 other countries that are included in this continent and surrounding the continent in the middle, the other countries are Terraza, and Coraluxe. And apparently the continent in the middle can only be traveled by expert adventurers, It's called the Dark Continent, fittingly named because, well.. It's dark. As far as the second continent that's mentioned in the book, I don't know much about it. The book doesn't mention much about it

My father was an expert swordsman who has wielded many different weapons, he was also an Ex adventurer.

"Father!" I said, clinging onto my dad's pants leg.

"What is it, champ?" He kneeled down to my level.

"Have you ever ventured to the Dark Continent?"

I climbed onto his lap.

"Of course I have! I'll tell you all about it before bed tonight!"

I smiled widely and ran off.

"I'm going to play outside until then!"

I ran and put my coat on to run outside.

"Don't hurt yourself son"

So I haven't found out if this world has magic yet, but there are forms of super humans. My father is one.

I spent hours playing in the snow, trying to see if I could do magic, Creating fire, manipulating the snow, creating anything in fact. But to no avail.

I know I can do SOMETHING. I'm almost positive I wasn't brought here with no powers at all. I've got to be special in some way!

I came back to the house hours later, freezing cold and shivering.

"Oh baby you must be freezing! Come here and I'll start a fire"

Mother grabbed me and pulled me towards the fireplace.

"It's no big deal mommy! Don't worry yourself!"

I chattered as I spoke.

"It is a big deal, get close now!" She began to take off her gloves.

What is she taking off her gloves for if she's only starting a fire.. I thought to myself.

She began snapping her fingers and she created a spark, and that spark turned into a blaze in the palm of her hand in which she ignited the wood inside of the fireplace with.

My face lit up with a look of surprise and the light from the fire.

"Come on Stella, our flint is right above the fireplace, you're so lazy!" My father came around and chuckled.

"Mother, how did you do that!" I jumped with excitement.

"Your mother was an exceptional mage back in her adventurer days!" She said, puffing out her chest.

"No, Like can you show me how to do it!" I climbed onto her lap.

Stella gave Nolan a weird look, a look that seemed almost pensive. She shook it off and spoke.

"Sure honey!"

Mother closed her eyes and prepared to snap her fingers.

"May my blaze bring light to the dark and warmth to my comrades.. Ignite!"

She snapped her fingers and the sparks created a fire in her palm.

I stood theres in amazement

"I wanna learn magic too!" Mother put her finger over my mouth when I was done.

"Yes! If you practice you'll make a fine mage one day!" Mother smiled and patted my head.

"Or he can be a splendid swordsman like his father!"

"Gya Ha Ha Ha!"

Father let out a hardy laugh.

"Oh you shut up Nolan, he's going to be a mage! Isn't that right Otto!?"

"No, he wants to be a swordsman like his father, right, champ!?"

I fell directly in the middle of their banter.

Father was obviously louder than mother, his inside voice is almost like he's yelling. Even though he was loud they both managed to equally put me under the pressure of the spotlight.

I tried to quickly think of an answer to appease them both.

"I'll be whatever I'm best at!"

I hoped to satiate them both.

"I have an idea! Let's start now, Repeat after me, Otto." She said as she closed her eyes and pointed her finger upwards.

"May this spark be the guiding light in even the darkest of nights: Torch"

When she finished her incantation, a tiny flame grew above her finger, it was very bright.

"This is beginner level magic, even you can do it!"

That's a little backhanded but I get the sentiment.

I repeated the incantation but nothing happened, not even a spark.

"Why didn't it work, mommy.." I asked, with a sad look on my face.

Mother had a depressing look on her face as well, however father had a wide grin spanding from ear to ear.

"Is the fact our child can't use magic that amusing to you, Nolan?"

"No! It just means he'll be a great swordsman!"

"Gya Ha Ha Ha!" My father laughed loudly.

"Why can't I use magic?" I turned to my mother and frowned.

Stella sighed.

"Your father made a deal with a creature called a Chimera. Creatures that reside in the Dark Continent. He made a deal that trades his ability to use magic in return for physical prowess, and it seems as though the curse has passed onto you."

I was heartbroken however judging by the look and demeanor my mother had. I can tell that the fact I have my fathers curse has an effect on my parents. I could hear them arguing and bickering from the room over. Mother was constantly throwing shots at Father while he was just trying to defend himself.

A couple months has passed and I've learned that there are people who can use magic, and people who use curses, these people are called Cursebearers, they became Cursebearers because they decided to venture into the dark continent in search of more power, this often backfired for the poor saps. These people have a downside along with a positive effect that comes with their curse. Be it the inability to use magic with stronger physical prowess. However not all Cursebearers are unable to use magic, some have even more powerful magic, some, with no downsides. They call the people who bear this 'Blessed'.

Father was one of these Cursebearers, and I guess I am too.

I've just gotta explore the extent of my abilities.

After that day I began testing to see what my abilities were, all to realize, I should probably wait until I'm older because I'm still only 2 years old..

about 3 more years pass, placing me at 5 years old

What I've come to learn is that I have enhanced regeneration, a minor wound that would take the average person 5 days to heal only takes me about 2 days, So I'd say the healing factor is about 2 times that of an average human. I'd like to bet I can regrow limbs, but I would not like to try it.

I haven't gotten too much strength but I am a little stronger than your average 5 year old but still only just a little.

One day I decided to go outside in order to test what I can do.

"Father! I'm leaving!"

"Bring home a fine lady to carry on the Von Blaire name, Son!"

"Gya Ha Ha Ha!"

My father laughed loudly.

"Ha-Ha, Very funny Father." I said as I left out.

I had to go down to the village nearby in order to get supplies for my experiments.

I collected my thoughts as I walked into said nearby village.

So apparently the Von Blaire house is split into 3 Houses

Von Eins Blaire

Von Zwei Blaire

and Von Drei Blaire

The Drei branch of the house are nobility, high ranking in this world's society. but we're from the Eins Branch. Our branch isn't the highest in society, nor are we nobility but we aren't commoners. Our branch is known for being great Adventurers and the Zwei branch are known for being Diplomats.

With us not being the richest, we don't live in a castle or anything, our money comes from adventuring.

As I was collecting my thoughts I approached the village and I noticed a girl.

She was sitting under a tree alone and seemingly crying.

I really don't want to help her, there's a million other things I could be doing like experimenting, but I really don't have a choice..

"I'm really about to do this, aren't I.."

I grumbled to myself and rubbed my head.

I walked over to the poor girl and as she noticed me approaching, she turned to me to see who was approaching her.

I almost paused in my tracks as I saw her.

Her ears were long and pointed clearly resembling that of an elf. The length of her hair was only about down to her shoulders, almost like a bob cut. She had this glossy brown hair that got lighter as it went down, and green eyes that look like emeralds

She was so cute!

"Uhm.."

"I-.."

I stammered as I spoke.

Until it finally hit me: I never really spoke to people in my past life..

I have no clue how to talk to people!

Now I'm wishing I took the time of day to get a girlfriend or atleast play a Dating Sim!

Sure all that time spent studying and working with no sleep, all by myself would've paid off in the long run, but I'm dead now! All that stuff doesn't even matter anymore! It was pointless!

The girl simply kept crying.

I scratched my head.

"Why are you crying..?"

"The other kids won't let me play with them.."

She sniffled in between her cries.

"Well-"

I was cut off in the midst of my sentence.

"They won't let me play with them all because I'm an Elf!"

She kept on crying.

"I can see that.."

I said to myself

"I'll play with you, It's okay.."

I reached out to pat her back, but I hesitated.

"R-Really?"

"Yeah, Really! I don't care that you're an elf!"

I put out my hand to help her up.

"Thank you.."

She sounded as though she were going to burst out crying again.

"What's your name..?" She said as I pulled her up off the ground.

"Otto."

"Otto Von Blaire."

And You?

I spoke with a serpent-like grin on my face

"Maelin, Maelin Fawnea."

Fawnea.. Fawnea is the name of a town who holds a monopoly of all the mining villages in the area if I'm not mistaken..

Fawnea Township.

"Can you let go of my hand now.." She kept tugging away from my hand.

"Oh, of course!"

I let go

Maelin and I traveled down into the village

And as we entered the village, almost immediately 2 boys started heckling Maelin.

"Look at the Fairy Freak!" The 2 boys pointed and laughed at Maelin.

I looked around and back at Maelin.

Maelin seemed as though she were going to start bawling on the spot.

I then looked at the boys and pointed at Maelin.

"Yeah!"

A Fairy, huh?

"Yeah, a Fairy!"

One of the boys spoke

"Get out of here, you aren't welcome!"

"Hey! Watch it!" I attempted to dodge the rocks however I still was hit by a few

"Ow! That hurts, you jerks!"

Maelin was crouched on the ground covering her head

I picked up a rock to throw back at the boys. I winded it back over my head

"Take this!" I yelled as I threw the rock full force at the boys. However.. That didn't go how I expected

I was supposed to throw the rock really hard, hit one of the boys on their head, and they run away and say something like:

"Oh no! These guys are too strong, we need to split guys!"

And run away, then this is where Maelin says "Oh you're so strong Otto! And amazing!" and whatnot.

Except the rock barely made it to my target, almost like I didn't even throw it!

Man, This blows! Now I look like some loser!

The rock hit the ground not even close to my target.

The boys looked at the rocks, then back at me.

"The hell was that.." One of the boys muttered

I've gotta bolt!

I grabbed Maelin's arm and ran with her.

"Hey! You get back here!" The boys chased after us.

Maelin and I kept running, however I'm only 5 years old.. And I can't run that fast..

The boys caught up very easily.. But as they got closer I took the opportunity to kick up sand into their eyes and this stunned them. As they were stunned I took the time to get away with Maelin.

We were hiding behind some houses around the corner.

I was gasping for air and bent over.

"They're gone I believe.." I said in between my tired gasps for air.

I looked up at Maelin and expected her to be crying but surprisingly she was laughing.

"What's so funny..?"

"Nothing.. Just that no one's ever stood up for me before!"

She giggled in a cute manner.

"Yeah, yeah.. Don't mention it.."

"Y'know you're pretty funny.. For a commoner!"

She giggled as she spoke.

Wow! Stuck-up much..

"Commoner.. So I'd assume you're royalty?"

I picked myself up off of the wall to look her in the eyes.

"Yes! I am. 2nd heir to the Fawnea throne!"

She proudly exclaimed with her hands on her hips.

"Throne..? But isn't the Fawnea's land simply a mining village?"

"Are you stupid..? Well I guess you are just a commoner. I don't expect you to know much"

That's rude!

"The Fawnea Village is merely a mining town owned by the Fawnea kingdom."

She scoffed.

Now I see what kind of person she is…

Wait!

It just so happens that the one day I decide to go outside, it happens that I run into and help the Heir to a whole kingdom!

Talk about luck.. Man I really hope this comes with some perks!

Like when she becomes Princess of the kingdom she'll like me so much that she'll marry me into the throne or something!

Then she randomly crouched down and hid her face.

"Except I don't want to take the throne.."

She said in a melancholy tone of voice .

"And why is that..?" I stepped closer and crouched down with her.

"I want to be an adventurer!" She looked at me and said loudly.

"Eh?"

I was simply shocked

So now my fantasies of becoming the prince of a whole kingdom are crushed under her fancy little feet.

AGAIN! This blows!

"Yes! I show exceptional talent as a mage and I want to be an adventurer."

"I want to be an adventurer too! That's awesome!"

I shook off my disappointment and tried to reciprocate .

"So I assume you're going to Hawkens then, right?"

"Hawkens..? What's that?" I asked

Maelin gave me a long explanation on what Hawkens is, so I'll abridge it. Hawkens Academy is a school for people who use magic, and those who use curses. It's also much like an Adventurers Guild for kids, they send kids on missions to take care of petty crimes, and essentially E to C rank missions. However the older students can potentially venture into the Dark continent, the outskirts mostly.

"Last question. What were those boys talking about when they said you're a fairy?"

I was clearly looking at her ears

"I'm part fairy.. I didn't want to tell you because I didn't want you to bully me too.." She said timidly

"Oh, well.. I don't see how it's much of an issue."

"Ah! Well, uhm.. Agh Nevermind." She couldn't maintain eye contact

"If you say so."

I looked around the corner to see if the boys were still there

"Thank you for helping me again! It's getting dark, so I need to go home." She started to walk away

I waved goodbye as she was departing

I should probably get home as well..
