Chapter 9 - Vulnerability

Inside the police station, the officers looked at the group of people who had been brought in, their expressions serious.

After hearing the details of the situation, the officer initially wanted to mediate between the parties.

However, the women's group was very stubborn and immediately made it clear that they were not interested in mediation.

The officer was confused. Wasn't it them who had been the ones to assault others and still owed money?

Mediation would clearly be beneficial to them, so why were they being so uncooperative?

"Since you don't want to mediate, let's proceed with formal procedures," the officer said, slamming a file onto the desk.

Chen Ning and her group didn't seem to care at all. Chen Ning's mother sarcastically remarked, "This is how it should be—handle it officially! Get this scammer locked up! Let them rot in prison!"

The officer almost laughed but managed to suppress it. He picked up the file he had just thrown on the desk.

Then, he began to educate Wang Meng and the others on the law.

"Ms. Wang Meng, the most important thing," the officer looked at Wang Meng and said, "Are you his girlfriend?"

"I... I... I..." Wang Meng couldn't get a word out for a long time.

Chen Ning, realizing they were in the wrong, grabbed her mother, who was still trying to argue, and gave Wang Meng a meaningful glance.

"...Fine, I'll pay it back," Wang Meng finally admitted helplessly, nodding.

After leaving the police station.

Jiang Huai looked at the three of them and said, "Alright, enough talk. Pay up."

Wang Meng had completely lost her temper.

Embarrassed, she said, "I don't have the money."

Jiang Huai wasn't angry. He pointed at Chen Ning, who was standing next to her, and said, "It's okay, isn't she your best friend? Ask her for it."

Wang Meng looked at Chen Ning, tears in her eyes, and said, "Ningning... can you help me, please?"

Chen Ning bit her lip, feeling uncomfortable inside.

70,000 was not a small amount for her.

"Jiang Huai, I don't have that much money right now, I can give you 5,000, can we just leave it at that?"

"Huh?" Jiang Huai laughed in disbelief.

"70,000 down to 5,000? Wow, you really are a master at bargaining. What are you thinking? Just give me the money. If you really don't have it, write an IOU."

Chen Ning trembled with anger.

Chen Ning's mother couldn't stand it anymore, so she pulled her daughter aside and suggested she quickly write an IOU, but it should be in Wang Meng's name.

"We're leaving." After giving Jiang Huai the IOU, the three of them walked out of the police station.

It wasn't until the group had completely left the scene that Jiang Huai let out a long breath.

"What's wrong? Are you feeling sorry for your white moonlight who's been wronged?" Lu Wanyin sat on a nearby step.

She rested her chin on her hand and smiled at Jiang Huai.

"No." Jiang Huai's expression was brighter than it had ever been.

"This feels so good."

After all the commotion, they didn't even get to eat, and Jiang Huai remembered there were still some vegetables in the fridge.

He decided to cook dinner for Lu Wanyin.

Using the meat and vegetables in the fridge, Jiang Huai prepared a rather hearty dinner.

Lu Wanyin's eyes widened as she looked at the food.

Jiang Huai even noticed that the girl seemed like she might cry after seeing such a generous meal.

This made him feel a little emotional, wondering what kind of life this girl had been living.

"During the observation period, if you want to eat anything, just let me know," Jiang Huai said with a smile while serving her some food.

Lu Wanyin's eyes glistened slightly, and she quietly said as she dug into her food, "Actually, I can cook too. If we get the chance, I can cook for you."

"Sure, I'll be looking forward to it," Jiang Huai replied.

After this meal, Jiang Huai felt like Lu Wanyin had lowered her guard a little towards him.

At the moment, she was curled up on the couch, holding a bag of potato chips, watching TV, and enjoying her snacks.

"I'm going to take a shower," Jiang Huai said as he turned to walk toward the bathroom, but then noticed that Lu Wanyin had followed him and started to take off her clothes.

"What are you doing?" Jiang Huai quickly turned around, his face turning red with embarrassment.

Lu Wanyin looked at him innocently, her pale stomach glistening in the light. "Didn't we agree on 24-hour surveillance? I have to follow you even when you're in the shower."

"Wha—what?! This is too much! At least give me some privacy when I shower! I did it by myself this morning!" Jiang Huai stammered, flustered.

Lu Wanyin tilted her head and thought for a moment before reluctantly nodding. "Okay… just for the shower. But don't relax your guard at other times."

Jiang Huai let out a relieved sigh and quickly entered the bathroom, worried that she might change her mind.

The sound of water soon filled the room.

Lu Wanyin remained curled up on the couch, a faint smile tugging at her lips.

She remembered that Jiang Huai had already showered by himself that morning.

She had only been teasing him earlier.

This guy—he looked kind of cute when he was shy.

At bedtime, they still shared the same bed with handcuffs as part of the service, despite Jiang Huai's protests, which ended in a complete defeat.

"Good night," Lu Wanyin said, closing her eyes right after. A few seconds later, her breathing was steady.

She was really on the dot, not a second more or less.

Jiang Huai could only helplessly close his eyes and sleep.

But for some reason, his body felt like it was charged for 24 hours on standby after just a 5-minute recharge.

He slowly sat up and was surprised to find that Lu Wanyin was no longer beside him.

He looked around but couldn't find her in the room.

"Where's the 24-hour surveillance?" Jiang Huai chuckled bitterly. He had thought that Lu Wanyin had just gone to the bathroom, but after waiting for over ten minutes with no sign of her, he decided to get out of bed.

Fortunately, the handcuffs weren't chained to the bedpost tonight.

Jiang Huai quickly put on some clothes and left the room. He checked the bathroom first, but it was empty. Then, he heard some noise coming from the balcony.

Jiang Huai tiptoed to the balcony and was met with a breathtaking sight.

The bright moonlight bathed Lu Wanyin in a soft, silver glow, creating a beautiful scene.

She was still wearing that white lace nightgown, like a beautiful dream.

The light fabric of her dress fluttered in the night wind, outlining her delicate curves.

The lace trim on her shoulders was barely visible, adding a touch of seductive allure.

Her long black hair cascaded down her back, contrasting against her white dress, making her pale skin look even more ethereal.

Lu Wanyin leaned on the balcony railing, slightly tilting her head up to gaze at the night sky.

Jiang Huai noticed the reflection of the bright moon in her long, narrow eyes, but there was a faint sadness in her gaze.

As he stood there admiring this perfect scene, Lu Wanyin slightly turned her head and coldly looked at him.

"If you keep sneaking up on me like that, I'll kill you," she said.

Jiang Huai was taken aback and then blushed, scratching his head. "No… I was just worried because you hadn't come back for a while…"

Lu Wanyin chuckled, her frosty expression melting away.

"I was just kidding."

Jiang Huai couldn't help but be stirred by her smile. His feet moved on their own as he slowly walked to the balcony, standing next to her.

"Can't sleep?" he asked awkwardly.

"Mm."

"Is something bothering you?"

"You're a good person, Jiang Huai," Lu Wanyin suddenly said, catching him off guard.

Jiang Huai froze for a moment. Why was she suddenly giving him a "good person" card?

He gave a dry laugh and said, "Unfortunately, good people don't always get a good return…"

"Jiang Huai," Lu Wanyin interrupted him, turning to face him. She said, word by word, "If you're infected, I'll kill you."

Jiang Huai didn't respond immediately. After a while, he sighed.

"If I were to become a monster like Shen An'an, who eats people, then you killing me would be justified."

"However..." Lu Wanyin's gaze flickered.

"But I don't want to kill you…"

Jiang Huai didn't expect Lu Wanyin to say such a thing. He had thought she was cold and indifferent, that everything was a facade. But now it seemed that—

She was more fragile than he had imagined.
