Chapter 9 - Devil's Bargain

Liu Lei called home to inform his parents that he would be away for a month. After some thought, they decided it might be good for him to clear his mind and didn't press him further. He brought Yan Fang—the girl—to S city, a southern city with a population of about three million. They found a hotel to stay in, and after settling Yan Fang, Liu Lei ventured out on his own to purchase a DV camera. Returning to the hotel, he had dinner with Yan Fang and asked for the address of Vice Mayor Yang Tian. With the camera in hand, he set out alone.

He strolled around the streets, waiting for nightfall. When darkness fully enveloped the city, he arrived at Yang Tian's residence. Summoning the power of darkness, his form melded into the shadows, vanishing from sight. Using the cover of night, he approached a lit window and peered inside, where he saw a middle-aged woman and a young boy, probably in his teens, watching television. He moved to another window, where two figures stood—one wearing a white shirt and holding a cigarette, slightly overweight. This was clearly Vice Mayor Yang Tian. The other was a man with a glass eye—none other than Wang Fei, the notorious gang leader known as the "Blue-Eyed Wolf." Liu Lei couldn't believe his luck; he had found them on his first visit. He turned on the DV camera, pointing it toward the scene inside.

Inside, the balcony was buzzing with conversation. Wang Fei was asking, "Did you capture the eldest daughter of the Yan family?" "No. I sent Zhang and the others to get her. They came back yesterday and said they encountered the 'Terminator.' A bunch of lunatics! Who dares interfere with my affairs? I'll find them and have them erased!" Liu Lei, outside, heard the word "Terminator" and thought to himself, "At that time, I did resemble one."

Within the room, Yang Tian furrowed his brow and asked, "Is that thing from the Yan family really worth all this trouble? Why go to such lengths?" Wang Fei responded, "Don't you believe me? That man from the Yan family only knows it's an heirloom, but doesn't even know which dynasty it's from. If he hadn't started asking for appraisals, someone wouldn't have noticed the treasure he had." Yang Tian quickly inquired, "When is it from, then?" "I don't know. All the antique dealers in the city say it's quite old, but no one can tell what dynasty it's from." Wang Fei smirked. "That man really held out. His bones were nearly broken, but in the end, he bit his own tongue and refused to reveal where the thing was hidden. But his wife and little daughter were very beautiful. The brothers in my gang still remember them fondly. His daughter is probably twelve or thirteen years old. I've never been with such a young girl. Damn, it was so satisfying. That night, I came three times on her. She was sore the next day, heh."

Liu Lei finally understood why Yan Fang had such a look in her eyes. Yet, was it too cruel to exploit such a tragic soul?

The conversation continued inside, with Wang Fei lifting a suitcase from the floor and placing it on the table before Yang Tian. "Last time, the Yan family's eldest daughter went to the police. Thanks for covering for me. This is a small token of my gratitude." Yang Tian opened the suitcase, and Liu Lei focused the camera on it. Inside, neatly stacked hundred-dollar bills filled the box. Wang Fei continued, "Once we find the treasure and unload it, we'll split the proceeds. I'll leave now."

Having gathered the information he needed, Liu Lei didn't rush to punish these two scoundrels. He took the DV camera and headed toward the city's TV station. "Sleep." Liu Lei spread his arms, and a faint black mist began to spread, enveloping the entire building. The workers inside were suddenly overtaken by an overwhelming drowsiness and fell asleep one by one. Liu Lei made his way to the main control room, altering all cable TV broadcasts to replay the footage from his DV camera.

Who in S City didn't know Vice Mayor Yang Tian? Who in the city wasn't familiar with Wang Fei, the gang leader? Normally, such events in China were commonplace. The citizens would gripe about it, astonished by how someone could gather such evidence and broadcast it throughout the city. But tonight, things were different. A high-ranking vampire with mastery over dark magic was involved.

Liu Lei brought Yan Fang to the top floor of their hotel. "Bewitch!" Black smoke spiraled from his body, and with his continued effort, the smoke billowed higher, slowly spreading across the entire city. Under the cover of the night, no one noticed the strange phenomenon in the sky. The black mist began to descend, sinking into buildings and streets, disappearing from view. As Yan Fang stood there, still stunned, the entire city erupted in chaos. Shouts and curses, the sound of smashing glass, and objects being destroyed all exploded at once, as if it had been orchestrated. The city was in an uproar, with people suddenly filled with violent rage, flooding the streets and gathering outside the city government, the municipal party committee, and the prosecutor's office, chanting slogans demanding the punishment of corrupt officials and tyrants. Some even stormed into Yang Tian's home, beating him mercilessly, then proceeded to confront Wang Fei's "Blue Wolf Gang" at the gang's nightclub headquarters. As more people gathered, the once-outnumbered citizens began to turn the tide in their favor. They rushed into the nightclub, but the cunning Wang Fei had already fled. The angry mob tore the nightclub apart, leaving nothing but rubble.

Yan Fang, witnessing the effects of the "bewitchment," suddenly felt a deep fear. She realized that the person standing beside her was no man, but a devil—a terrifying demon. How could he make three million people in a city go mad like this? Liu Lei turned to her, his face pale from the strain. The sheer scale of the magic had taken its toll. Seeing her reaction, he asked, "Afraid? Well, it's too late for regrets now." Then, with a hint of melancholy, he added, "You accepted the devil's temptation and used the devil's power. Now, you must pay the price."

The mayor of S City quickly called the provincial authorities to report the riot and request support. Upon hearing this, the provincial governor immediately contacted the military, and soon green trucks were seen leaving a nearby military base.

As the sun rose, the dark power began to wane, and the enraged crowds began to regain their senses, slowly dispersing. The mayor wiped the sweat from his brow, letting out a long sigh of relief. Yet, the situation was far from resolved. Two days later, the provincial investigation team arrived in S City, and a week later, the city saw the replacement of the mayor and the head of the prosecutor's office. The newly appointed acting mayor immediately announced the formation of a joint task force to investigate the collusion between Yang Tian and Wang Fei, the corrupt officials and criminals. The near-dead Yang Tian was dragged out, tried, and retried, and under heavy pressure, the city police managed to capture "Blue-Eyed Wolf" Wang Fei in just two days. Two weeks later, a public trial was held, and both Yang Tian and Wang Fei were sentenced to death, executed immediately. Other involved parties faced sentences ranging from death to ten years of imprisonment. After the trial, Yang Tian and Wang Fei were swiftly taken to the execution grounds, and the sound of gunfire marked the end of their criminal lives. The following day, the acting mayor drove toward victory, and two days later, the vice-governor responsible for discipline arrived at the central government. The central leadership commented, "The people of S City have a strong sense of justice—well done!"

However, everyone was puzzled. While the criminal cases had been thoroughly investigated, no one could explain who had hypnotized the entire TV station staff to broadcast that video.

Yang Tian and Wang Fei were suddenly awakened, their eyes snapping open. Standing before them were two figures—a man and a woman. Wang Fei exclaimed, "You—you're the eldest daughter of the Yan family, aren't you?" Yan Fang let out a sinister laugh, pulling out a dagger she had already prepared and slowly walked toward them; Liu Lei turned and left.

Inside, the sounds of two men's agonizing screams and Yan Fang's frenzied shrieks echoed. Liu Lei shook his head. Yan Fang was determined to personally kill them, so he used illusion magic to deceive the executioners, leading them to a deserted house on the outskirts. After more than an hour, the sounds began to fade. Liu Lei entered the room and found two piles of mangled flesh on the floor. Yan Fang was sobbing beside them. He pulled her up and led her outside, casually casting a Five Thunder Fire Curse. Five bolts of heavenly lightning mixed with searing flames descended from the sky, striking the building into rubble, which then ignited into an inferno.
