Chapter 3: The Dying Siren's Gift**

*(Elara's POV)*

Trapped in the Coral Labyrinth

The Maw's enraged shriek echoed through the water as I darted between towering spires of bioluminescent coral. My claws scraped against ancient formations, leaving faint trails of pink light in my wake.

Warning: Hostile pursuit imminent," CHIP intoned. "Structural analysis suggests 87.6% chance of-"

The coral moved.

A massive spire collapsed inward, impaling the Maw through its gaping maw. Black blood clouded the water as the creature thrashed, its body snagged on razor-sharp formations that hadn't been there seconds before.

The city is alive.

And it's protecting me.

The Last Song

I followed the weakening melody through twisting corridors, my gills flaring at the scent of copper. There, in a cathedral of glowing coral-

A mermaid.

Her ruby scales were dulled, long red hair floating like a dying sunset around her. A gaping wound marred her stomach, tendrils of black ichor snaking through the water from it.

"You... came," she gasped, voice like cracking ice. Her webbed fingers clutched something glowing against her chest.

"Scanning," C

HIP whispered. **"Critical injuries. No survivable-"**

*Shut up.* I surged forward. "How do I help?"

The Heart Pearl

Her laugh bubbled blood. "No time. The Void Maw that bit me... its poison is in my veins." She pressed the glowing pearl into my hands. It pulsed warm, its light synchronizing with my frantic heartbeat.

"Eat it. Quickly."

I hesitated then swallowed.

Fire exploded down my throat. My vision whited out as:

**[SYSTEM OVERRIDE]**

**Obtained: Heart Pearl (Siren's Core)**

The mermaid's body began dissolving into luminescent particles. "They came from the trench," she whispered urgently. "The Old Ones. They hate... the light. Your pink scales... they remember..."

Her hand gripped mine one last time. "Grow stronger than I was."

Then-

She was gone.

Only her voice lingered, whispering through the coral:

*"Beware the Leviathan that dreams."*

The City Reacts

The coral pillars shuddered. Where the ruby mermaid had been, new growth erupted-a perfect statue of her, arms outstretched in warning.

The water churned as an unseen force rippled through the city. Coral spires fractured, releasing clouds of bioluminescent spores that winked out like dying stars. The perfect statue of the ruby mermaid—newly grown, arms outstretched in warning—began to crumble. The warning had come too late.

"CHIP!" I gasped, struggling against the unnatural current. "What's happening?"

"Cataclysmic energy spike detected—"

A boom split the trench. The rockfall that had pinned the Abyssal Maw exploded outward, shattered like brittle glass. The Maw itself convulsed in the water, its bioluminescent eyes flickering wildly. It wasn't attacking. It wasn't even moving of its own will anymore.

It was disintegrating.

Its black ichor didn't drift away—it was pulled, siphoned by something unseen. The Maw let out one final, piercing wail before its entire form collapsed in on itself. Flesh unraveled into ribbons. Bones blackened, cracking apart before vanishing into the abyss. Within seconds, nothing remained but a swirling void where it had been.

Then I saw it.

Through the swirling haze of disturbed sediment, something opened in the trench below. A jagged fissure, black as the void, lined with writhing tendrils of bioluminescent light.

And the City of Coral reacted.

Pillars buckled and collapsed. Entire walls of living reef withered in seconds, turning to pale husks. The labyrinthine tunnels that had been woven for centuries—gone, as if something had fed on their very essence.

I flinched as a structure near me shattered, sending razor-sharp shards spiraling through the current. Schools of fish darted frantically before they, too, were caught in the silent, devouring force.

The scent of rotting tides thickened.

CHIP's voice crackled with static. "Immediate evacuation required. The entity is—"

The water twisted, currents bending in a way that defied physics.

Then, from the depths of the chasm, something moved.

Larger than the Maw. Larger than anything I'd ever imagined.

And it was rising.

light snuffed out.

In the sudden dark, CHIP's text burned red:

**[EVACUATE]**

**[EVACUATE]**

**[EVACUATE]**

I fled, the new pearl's light guiding me

Just as the trench below the city *opened its eye*.
