Chapter 2 - Chapter 2: Apartment

Not even 3 seconds later I heard more and more people crashing into the apartment's door.

I noticed that they were beginning to break the door.

While still out of breath, I started running up the stairs, my apartment was on the 4th floor.

After a short moment, I was almost there, my vision was starting to blur due to exhaustion.

But, just as I started thinking that I might get there in time, I noticed someone on the 3rd floor stairs.

I noticed this person had sharp teeth and weird skin color too.

"You fuckers are everywhere, aren't you?!" I said out loud while grinning.

Despite putting up a facade, I noticed I was starting to wobble, I needed to take a break.

The person ignored me and stared approaching me.

BAM

I heard the door break down. I knew it wouldn't last long but I thought that it might've lasted a bit longer than that. Now, it was a race against time.

The person lunged at me and I dodged it, it's fingers grazing the air right next to my cheek. To my surprise, it very quickly recuperated and lunged at me again, and then again. I heard the horde of people running up the stairs and panic began to creep in.

Then, a brilliant idea struck me, it filled me with one last rush of hope.

"Hey, you fucker, you want my blood? Come and take it." I said while extending my arm.

Just as I had anticipated, the person immediately lunged at me.

Just moments before this creature bit into my arm with its large and sharp teeth, I moved to the side, leaning against the wall, causing the person to fall down the stairs.

It crashed into the crowd of people, that had been running up to catch it's pray, me.

Whilst panting, trying to catch my breath, I climbed up to my floor and opened my apartment door, however, for a moment, I hesitated to enter, I heard the crowd of people running up the stairs, knowing that the crowd would instantly break my door down if I went in like this. Another idea struck me. While I was doubtful about if it would actually work, if I didn't do anything then my death was all but guaranteed.

I quickly removed one of my shoes and threw it up as high as I could. Alongside that, I waited for the exact moment the shoe hit the ground as when I opened the door, so the shoe would mask my quiet entry into my apartment.

Hearing the crowd of people approach closer and closer, I heard the shoe still making noise a few floors above mine, if I had to guess, it landed on the 6th or 7th floor.

Everything played out as I had intended, but, will that be enough?

BADUM BADUM

I felt my heart pounding, sweat dripping as all the people continued to get closer and closer to where I was.

Finally, they had arrived at my floor. For a moment, it seemed like they all stopped moving right in front of my door.

My head was filling up with countless ideas of what would happen next, and none of them were any good.

I headed over to the bathroom, accepting my fate. I covered my head with my arms and waited.

I waited and waited, but nothing happened, it was quiet now. As I quietly left the bathroom and scouted my apartment for any potential intruders, I realised that my plan DID in fact work.

I took a breath of relief at the possibility of being safe.

"Did I pass out in there?" I thought to myself while looking at the time, an hour had gone by since I had gotten inside of my apartment.

But soon after I calmed down and rationalized the situation, I realised that I was not safe, not even close.

I started thinking what to do next. But I couldn't help but be more interested in what these creatures were.

"Zombies? Nono, that kind of thing only exists in movies and trashy webnovels." However, for now, that was the only idea I had in mind.

Before I could come to a conclusion, I heard a scream in the room next to mine, startling me.

I froze for a moment, thinking to myself "Have they been breaking doors down one by one? What do I do now?"

I shakily took a deep breath in an attempt to calm down. After a moment, I began to think "What can I do to maximize my chances of survival? Think, Adam, think!!"

A few solutions popped into my head, some more probable than others, but none of them were particularly good. Suddenly, an idea that could work came to mind.

After a moment of consideration, I grinned, knowing this will sure as hell be painful.

I started knocking over everything, furniture, kitchenware, everything in sight. I had a hypothesis, if I made it look like zombies had already been here and ravaged everything, then there was a chance they might just move on to the next apartment, though, I still had to be careful to not be louder than my neighbour's screams, each of which filled me with both dread and purpose, reminding me why I mustn't stop now.

After a couple of minutes doing this, I had become exhausted.

"The hardest part was definitely trying to be quiet." I whispered to myself, panting and sweating due to the exhaustion.

At least it looked just the way I wanted it to, however, the toughest part has yet to come.

I gritted my teeth, knowing this will be extremely painful. I grabbed a glass shard from a mirror that I had broken while trashing the room. As I was mentally preparing myself, I noticed my neighbour's screams had ended.

BAM BAM

The zombies had finished off my neighbour and the next thing on their palate was me.

I gripped the glass shard in my right hand and put a piece of white cloth in my mouth, to muffle my screams.

I took a deep breath and cut my left arm with it.

Luckily, I managed to not cut it too deep, but it seemed I had cut a blood vessel since a lot of blood had started to spill uncontrollably. And suddenly, the pain came rushing in, it was unlike anything I had experienced ever before. My eyes were starting to tear up, and if it weren't for the cloth, the zombies would definitely know I was here.

After waiting for a couple moments that I didn't have for the pain to slightly subside, I poured my blood to make it seem like there was a huge struggle, my arm had began going numb from how much blood was pouring out.

BAM BAM BAM

I heard the door and I could tell it wouldn't hold for much longer. After I had splashed my blood everywhere, I went to a random place and let a lot of blood spill in that area, to making it seem like I had bled out there.

I quickly went to bandage my arm, however, just basing off the sound, my door had about 30 seconds left before breaking.

I quickly put down the bandages and did the last thing I could to maximize my chances of survival.

I took my cologne and sprayed a lot on myself, causing my wound to sting, reminding me that even if I survived this, my situation was dire.

I casted those thoughts aside for now, as I quickly went around my apartment, spraying it everywhere. I didn't know what these zombies were capable of, so I wanted to take as many precautions as I could.

CRICK CRACK

"Time's up, huh?" I said out loud, putting the cologne in my left pocket.

I managed to quickly and quietly go to my bedroom and hide under the bed, leaving the rest to fate.

Crack.... THUD

The door and barricades finally gave in. I saw a group of 3 or 4 zombies enter my apartment, I felt my body heat rising with each passing second.

Interestingly, the first place where ALL the zombies went to was the bathroom, where I had been hiding previously. A cold shiver ran down my spine as I came to a horrifying realization.

"Does that mean that mean they could distinguish how humans smelt among all these other scents?"

This left me pondering in confusion, from the amount of cologne I had sprayed around the house, that was the only thing I could smell, but they could distinguish the scent of humans amongst all of the other scents in the house.

My heart had been pounding, sweat dripping from my forehead to the floor, my wound was still stinging. If I made so much as a noise, it would be game over for me.

I had been observing them for as much as I could, with most of my view obstructed by the wall separating the living room and my bedroom, but the more I watched them, the more and more it seemed like their bodies didn't follow where their heads were turning to. I pondered for a moment why that could be.

After a moment, I huge grin appeared on my face. "They're blind, aren't they?" I thought to myself whilst holding my breath, to make as little noise as possible.

Just then, one of the zombies wandered into my room, and it seemed to know that it wasn't the only one in the room.

I started to panic, as the zombie seemed to be honing in on the smell, my smell. I thought to myself "Is this all really going to end like this..? I wish I could have talked to my parents more, gone on more adventures, made more friends... but, why right now, did I feel like I really should have apologized to HIM?"

Just before the zombie could finish hunting me down. To my absolute surprise and relief. My extremely patriotic neighbour, in a red sweatsuit, came out of his room holding his 2 guns that he loved to show to everyone who visited him.

He shouted at zombies: "HEY YOU, FUCKERS! I'M NOT JUST GOING TO SIT AND WAIT PATIENTLY FOR YOU TO INFECT ME!" he said while firing his shotgun thrice at one of the zombies, "IF YOU WANT TO INFECT ME, COME AND DO IT!" He screamed and then spat on the ground.

For a moment, I began to hope that he might actually be able to win, but soon after that thought, even after retreating to the staircase, he couldn't manage to reload in time and one of the zombies bit him in the right shoulder and both him and the zombie had fallen down a flight of stairs. I couldn't make out what was happening by sound alone, but being too scared to go out, I stayed hidden under the bed.

Luckily for me, the zombies seemed to have completely forgotten about me. After a couple of minutes had passed with no activity near my room, I slowly crawled out from under the bed and

I peeked outside, wanting to see what had happened.

I reeled back, feeling sick to my stomach after I caught a glimpse of what used to be my neighbour, he was in the middle of transforming, it looked like there was something from the bite mark on his shoulder moving, as if a little bug was crawling to his brain.

Nonetheless, I peeked out once again, but this time, the zombie that used to be my neighbour was now standing up, moving almost identically to how the other zombies. I was a bit confused by how this can be, because each human's physical conditions were different, and zombies took over the bodies of the humans, but that was a question for later.

It seemed I was unnoticed even now, as I watched the zombie that used to be my neighbour walk down the stairs, and from the sound of it, help the zombies in what they were doing.

At first, I wanted to go down and help whoever might need it, but quickly, I remembered what kind of situation this was.

Knowing better, I quietly walked over to the bandages that I had previously put down and I bandaged my arm. Whilst doing that, I was thinking about my next course of action

My arm continued to sting even after I had finished up with the bandaging, but that was to be expected after that kind of stunt.

Suddenly, an idea came to me. Earlier, I threw my shoe up to the 6th floor, and the zombies went up there, from that I could guess that they broke down each door and infected everyone they could. And since they were just at my door, that meant they had gone downstairs, so did it mean the floors above the 6th were safe?

After coming to that realization, I had decided what I would do next. I would prepare and rest for a little bit and after that, I'd go up to the 7th floor.

I laid down on my bed, absolutely exhausted and sweaty.

"Holy shit... is this real?" I said to myself while laying on my bed, in complete disbelief.

While I was resting, I decided I would check out both of my neighbour's apartments before I headed up.

After a few more minutes of resting, I decided that it had been long enough. First I went to the neighbour's apartment, who had the shotguns.

Surprisingly, there wasn't much. After ravening through his stuff, I decided to go the other neighbour's apartment, but just as I was leaving, I noticed something out the corner of my eye.

Having caught my interest, almost as if it were calling out to me. I went over there to check what it that was.

"For a guy that confronted a group of zombies with 2 shotguns, I was expecting something like a handgun to be lying around, not this." I said out loud while holding a big hunting knife.

I took the knife and put it in a hilt on my right leg, after checking his apartment one last time, I finally left it.

I went to the other apartment which was next to mine, and there wasn't anything worth taking apart from perfume, which didn't do much, but it was still something. So I grabbed a couple perfume bottles and I left for the 7th floor.

After arriving, I knew my hypothesis was correct as almost everything was intact.

Deciding to test out my luck once again, I knocked on the door farthest to the left and said "Is anyone in here?"

To my surprise and relief, someone quickly opened the door, and it was another human on the other side.

Before I could even get a word out, they suddenly put an MP-4 to my head.

"WAIT-" I exclaimed desperately
