Chapter 30 - Chapter 030: Uncle Xu's Past

At ten o'clock at night, the hospital's blood test results came out. The doctor held the report and said, "The blood - alcohol content doesn't meet the drunk - driving standard."

"What drunk driving?" Gong Jingfan asked in confusion.

"Uh, didn't you bring the person here to check for this?"

Gong Jingfan glanced at Wang Bing. "Xiao Wang, did you not explain clearly?"

"I just said to do a blood test. Maybe the doctor got confused because we're in police uniforms."

The doctor was also puzzled. "We've conducted all the blood test items. This sample is normal overall. Apart from slightly elevated potassium levels, there's about 5 milligrams of alcohol in every 100 milligrams of blood."

"Okay, thanks!"

After they announced the results, the boy took the girl away. Lao Gong (Gong Jingfan) said dejectedly, "This needle - stabbing pervert has committed many crimes. Strangely enough, none of the victims have shown any adverse reactions."

"How can we ordinary people understand a pervert's thoughts? Maybe he's just venting his frustration. Shouldn't this be the policeman's job?"

"Since we've taken on this case, let's see it through to the end." Lao Gong (Gong Jingfan) took out a piece of candy. "Want a piece of candy?"

"No, I'm starving. Let's go back and have a meal!"

"Let's come earlier tomorrow morning. We must catch this guy!" Lao Gong (Gong Jingfan) secretly made up his mind.

On the pedestrian street, after the policemen left, Di Zhen walked with his hands in his pockets to the scene of the incident. There was a half - drunk cup of milk tea that the girl had dropped on the ground. He picked it up and took a look. There were some rice - grain - shaped things floating in the milk tea.

"Ugh!" Big Guy was shocked. "These are... maggots?"

"Oh, so they're maggots..." Di Zhen examined them carefully. "Do you have a bag? I'll take some back for research."

"No way to research. It's so gross. Throw it away right now!" Big Guy snatched it and threw it into the trash can. "I'm starving. Let's go back!"

"Let's go to Auntie Liu's place."

"Didn't you say you'd figure it out before telling her?"

"I want to see if Uncle Xu has come back."

Big Guy clearly wasn't happy. "I'm so starving!"

"I'll buy you a steamed bun."

Big Guy reluctantly agreed. The two of them went to Auntie Liu's place. When they got to the door, Di Zhen pricked up his ears to eavesdrop.

Inside the house, the voices of two people could be heard. Auntie Liu complained, "Why are you just getting back? The food is cold."

"I've been working overtime recently. Things will get better in a few days." Uncle Xu's voice sounded tired.

"Honey, are you hiding something from me?"

"Sigh, don't worry needlessly. I'm an old man. Do you think I'd go out and have an affair? Who'd take a fancy to me?"

"I'm not worried about that. You've been frowning these days. I'm worried about you!"

"I... I have some things to deal with on my own. Don't ask. Let me sort it out by myself, okay?"

Hearing this, Auntie Liu let out a long sigh.

Big Guy whispered, "I wonder what his wife would think if she knew he was a pervert."

Di Zhen said, "Tomorrow we'll bring Geng Hao here to see what's hidden in his room."

"And in the basement."

Early the next morning, Di Zhen, Big Guy, and Geng Hao came to Auntie Liu's residence. In principle, they didn't want their clients to know their work methods to avoid unnecessary misunderstandings. So they lurked downstairs. They only went upstairs after Auntie Liu went downstairs to buy groceries.

Geng Hao quickly picked the lock of the security door and smugly said, "Brother Di really can't do without me, right?"

"You're just a tool. What are you so proud of!" Big Guy gave him a flick on the head.

"Brother Di, he hit me.

Di Zhen said, "You can fight back!"

Geng Hao glanced at Big Guy, who looked fierce and rascally. How could he dare to fight back?

Then they came to the study door. After Geng Hao unlocked it, he couldn't push the door open. He wondered, "Strange, could it be bolted from the inside?"

Di Zhen examined the door. He ran his hand along the edge of the door and found an inconspicuous nail. With a gentle tug, there was a string hidden behind it. It turned out to be a trap designed by Uncle Xu himself. No wonder he was from a science and engineering background.

When he pulled the string hard, the bolt lifted up, and the three of them entered smoothly.

The study was probably converted from a storage room. It was even smaller in area than the secondary bedroom next to it. There were custom-made bookshelves on both sides of the study. Geng Hao and Big Guy were attracted by the animal specimens on the shelves and studied them there. "This is a British Shorthair, right? It looks so real!" "This is real. Don't you know what a specimen is?"

Di Zhen noticed that most of the books were related to biology. He ran his finger along the spines of the books and finally stopped at a book titled [Research Results Report of Jiangxia Life Science Academy from 2003 to 2004]. He took it out and saw that there was no barcode on the back. It should be an internally - published book.

The book was very worn out from being flipped through. Di Zhen casually flipped through it. Obviously, he couldn't understand the professional terms on it. Whenever he came across marked places, he took pictures with his "camera".

There was a photo printed in the middle of the book. A group of researchers stood together in white coats, looking high - spirited.

Uncle Xu and another old man stood right in the middle, holding a book together, a journal called "Life".

"Hey, don't touch it!"

"What's wrong with just touching it!"

Two idlers were arguing over a dog specimen. At this time, the sound of the door opening scared them. Obviously, Auntie Liu was back. Geng Hao's face turned pale. "We've been discovered!"

"Hide... Hide... Hide!" Big Guy stammered.

Di Zhen said, "I'll handle this. Wait for my signal and leave quietly."

He walked out of the study and gently closed the door. Auntie Liu was startled when she saw a man standing in the house after changing her shoes. Di Zhen explained, "I saw the door was unlocked and came in to wait for you. I also used your bathroom by the way!"

"Did I leave the door unlocked?" Auntie Liu asked in surprise.

"I'm here to report the findings of yesterday's investigation," Di Zhen quickly diverted Auntie Liu's attention from his unauthorized entry.

"Oh, let me pour you a glass of water."

"Thanks!"

The two sat down at the table. Di Zhen said, "We followed your husband all the way. He went to Shuangrong Community and stayed there for a while."

"Shuangrong Community?" Auntie Liu frowned. "That's our old house. We rented it out later, but the tenant moved out this year, and it's still empty!"

"We'll continue the investigation today."

"You've worked so hard."

"You're welcome... By the way, what exactly did your husband do before? I mean, what projects did he research?"

"Alas, it's both his glorious past and his shameful past.

He was a man fully committed to his work. For some time, every day after work, he passed by a shop selling bullfrogs. He saw that the innards of the slaughtered bullfrogs were all thrown into the trash can. So he bought the bullfrog innards from the chef at a price of ten yuan per catty.

"This stuff is a treasure for biologists. There are stem cells, somatic cells, and eggs in it. He used the equipment in the laboratory to study the most popular cloning technology in the academic circle at that time. He probably bought hundreds of catties of innards, and finally he succeeded! He successfully cloned a bullfrog embryo!

"Maybe it doesn't seem like much today, but in 2003, it was definitely a feat. Once his paper was published, it caused a sensation. Even an international academic society took a fancy to this paper. But his superior hoped that he would share this academic achievement equally. His superior said that his success was inseparable from the laboratory facilities. Moreover, if the laboratory became famous, it could get more scientific research funds, and promised him some benefits.

"You know, we were living a very hard life at that time. He also hoped to change our situation. Coupled with the constant persuasion from his superior and colleagues, he finally agreed to put his superior's name on the paper. But who would have known that a few days later, he was fired on completely trumped - up charges. Soon, his superior took the 'own' scientific research achievement abroad to receive an award, was interviewed by the TV station, and made it onto the list of the top ten outstanding scientific researchers of the year!"

Auntie Liu sighed and shook her head. "It's really ironic. The achievement he painstakingly obtained became someone else's overnight, and my husband almost lost everything!"
