I don't know wether this is excitement, or I'm being nervous. It's a new month, and a new day for me to start at the office. I woke up shivering, and the same time, I was excited. It's been a couple of years since I stopped working at Ryan's office. I was his assistant before I initiated the marriage idea because he found out I have a special blood group type.
Even while I was married to him, I still work for him, and most times I do it from home since he insists I don't come to the office, until I had to resign and become a full house wife.
I looked into the mirror for the last time befor proceeding to pick up my Hermes bag, turning to the direction of exit.
I was putting on a pink blazer, crafted from premium fabric with sharp lapels, featuring delicate handstitched embroidery. Metalic engraved buttons on cuffs, with a subtle stitch pattern on the back enhances its sleek.
I made my way to the living room and stopped just befor entering the dinning area. It was quiet, no one was around except for my mother, who was having breakfast.
"Mother! Where is father and my siblings? Don't tell me they are still sleeping? I asked, unconvinced. It was last 8am, and there was no way father would still be asleep at this hour.
She smiled and picked up a cup of tea. Standing next to me, she handed it over, and I took a sip.
"You are late young lady. It's your first day, and I am sure everyone is waiting to welcome you."
I exhaled, and glanced down at my wristwatch. I wondered how I slept. It had been a hectic week, going through the company's account had taken more than a week.
"I didn't realize it was this late. I need to be at the office. I am sorry, but I will have to skip breakfast."
I knew she wouldn't be pleased, but I couldn't afford to make her sad. She hesitated for a few seconds, contemplating wether I should leave on an empty stomach.
"Okay! Before you head out, there's something I have been meaning to ask. Now that no one is at home, this is a perfect time." She did not seem worried, rather I felt the curiosity in her tone.
"Mother! Is everything okay?"
"Yes, I know your marriage didn't work out. I am sure you dread talking about it, but it won't stop me from asking if you are not pregnant with his child."
Is she serious right now? She wants to have this conversation when I am late already?
"Mother! I am not pregnant with his child, I hope you are fine. I have to run along." I lean in, peck her cheeks before turning to the exit.
Owning a car in my name felt like a dream come true. I had always wanted one but could not afford it Untill now. I hoped into my car and drove out of the house.
Fifteen minutes later, I arrived at the company and parked in my designated spot. Father had already signed me a space for when I came to the office.
Stepping out, I marched towards the entrance of the towering building. The security guards greeted me as I walked pass, as soon as I entered the reception area, I was met with the sight of the employees.
"Congratulations Ms. Emily!" They all chorused, leaving me in shock. I had been to the office a few times and even held meetings with them, yet they welcome me with such enthusiasm.
"Thank you so much! I sincerely appreciate it." I responded, smiling from one figure to another. They were too many employees, I could not even recognize few of their faces. Now that I will be working with them, I need to register their faces.
Lisa stepped foward and handed me a banquet of flowers, then pulled me in for a hug.
"Congratulations! We are counting on you." She whispered, pulling out of the hug.
"Thank you so much! I promise to give in my best and make the company stand out. To accomplish that, I ask everyone to please cooperate with me."
"Yes. Ms. Emily!" They chorused again, followed by applause.
"Alright, it's Monday morning, let's get back to work." Father announced. And everyone quickly turned to leave.
"You look stunning. I never thought that blazer would suit you this well." Ethan complimented.
I smiled. "Well it did, now let's get to work." I turned and matched towards my office with them by my side.
Entering my office, I dropped my bag on the desk. There was already so much to do, but first I had a meeting with the employees.
"I will leave you guys here, I need to attend a meeting." I announced, getting a nod from father.
I went directly to the board room, the figures were already seated waiting for me.
"Good morning Ms. Emily!." They greeted, while I took my seat. I had no time to waste, and went directly to why I called them.
"Mr Adams, you are responsible for every department in the company. Everything coming in and going out has to go through you."
"Yes ma'am, I am aware of that."
"Good! I went through the company's records for the past eight months and I found discrepancies. There are goods missing or rather goods were sold without being documented."
"What are you talking about, ma'am?" My father's assistant inquired, his expression marked by confusion. Since they were all older than me, I made sure to speak calmly.
"You heard me correctly, and I demand explanation. "I urged my secretary to share the printed files and pass them to the team. "If you check meticulously, you would notice that some months are recorded, but the numbers don't tally."
"But ma'am, we have never had a shortage in the company. How is that possible? My secretary asked, adjusting herself to her seat, clearly confused.
"That's because the company generates much more than you can imagine. Anything taken out won't be noticed." I responded, crossing my hands, watching each figure.
"Ms. Emily! I think it should be a mistake. There's no way we could have sent out goods without them being recorded." The manager responded, attempting to avoid my gaze.
His reaction clarified that he knew something. There's no way all departments could make mistakes and submit their reports to the secretary. Even if they did, she would cross check everything before handing it to my father's personal assistant for submission to the general manager.
"Mr Adams, that has never happened in my thirty years of working alongside with the president. I ensure everything is recorded before it comes to your desk." My father's assistant interjected. This only proved that the general manager was hiding something.
"What do you have to say about this? If anyone is to be blamed, it's you. We have lost quite a lot of money that I won't even mention." I said.
He remained quiet for a while before looking to my direction. "Are you accusing me of embezzling money? I have been working with this company for years; don't make baseless actions."
"I respect you, Mr Adams, but when it comes to business, I don't joke around. I'm giving you this week to explain how things went missing. If you don't, I will have to suspend you till further notice."
I didn't know where the courage came from, but I had to take a stand. I couldn't allow him run the company to the ground. If this continues we might face bankruptcy.
"You all are dismissed." I ordered. They all stood to leave, except for the manager. I had nothing more to say to him. I stood up and walked out of the room. I understand that you are older than me, but that won't stop me from making decisions.
