Chapter 5 - Chapter 5: Shadows in the Glass

The whispers intensified, a chorus of unseen voices that seemed to claw at the edges of their minds. Suddenly, a heavy tome crashed to the floor from a nearby bookshelf, the sound echoing through the room like a gunshot.

The friends jumped, their flashlights darting wildly, searching for the source of the disturbance. Dust motes danced in the beams of light, creating fleeting illusions of movement in the periphery of their vision.

But they were alone. Or so it seemed. The silence that followed was even more unnerving than the crash itself, pregnant with anticipation.

Liam, ever the pragmatist, pulled out his phone, attempting to capture evidence of the strange occurrences.

"Maybe we can get something on camera," he muttered, his brow furrowed in concentration. But as he pressed the record button, the phone's screen flickered and died, displaying only a static-filled mess.

"What the...?" he exclaimed, trying again, but with the same result. "It's like something's interfering with the electronics."

A cold dread crept into his heart. It wasn't just the phone; he felt a prickling sensation on his skin, as if the very air around them was charged with an unseen energy.

As they cautiously explored the rest of the office, Chloe noticed a large, antique mirror hanging on one wall. Its ornate frame was covered in intricate carvings, some of which resembled the symbols she had seen earlier on the graffiti in the other room.

Drawn by a morbid curiosity, she approached the mirror cautiously. The glass was old and clouded, reflecting her image in a distorted and unsettling way.

As she peered into the depths of the mirror, she saw something move in the reflection behind her.

A fleeting glimpse of a shadowy figure, tall and gaunt, its features obscured by the darkness. But its eyes... its eyes seemed to burn with an unholy light, piercing through the gloom and fixing on her with an intensity that made her blood run cold.

Chloe gasped, recoiling from the mirror as if it had burned her. She whirled around, her heart pounding in her chest, but there was nothing there. Just the empty room, bathed in the flickering light of their flashlights. "Did you see that?" she whispered, her voice trembling.

The others exchanged uneasy glances. They were all experiencing the same sense of dread, the same feeling of being watched by something unseen.

They knew they were not alone in the asylum. Something was there with them, something ancient and malevolent, lurking just beyond the edge of their perception, playing with their fears, whispering its secrets in the shadows.

The whispers grew louder, closer, and Chloe felt a chilling certainty that whatever it was, it was watching them, waiting for them, and it knew their names.
