Chapter 5 - CHAPTER 5

Jiraiya moved swiftly through the dense forests bordering the Land of Fire. The moon hung low in the sky, casting long shadows that danced with the rustling of leaves. His mission was clear—investigate the strange disappearances near the border and uncover any threats that might endanger Konoha.

His mind was sharp, instincts honed from decades of experience—both past and present. This time, he would be ahead of the curve.

---

A Silent Warning

Jiraiya's first destination was a small outpost near the border, where patrols had gone missing. As he approached, the unsettling silence confirmed his suspicions—something was wrong. The usual sounds of life, the distant chatter of guards, the flickering of lanterns—absent.

He crouched low, scanning the area. The outpost gates were slightly ajar.

No signs of forced entry… they didn't even have time to react.

Drawing a kunai, he stepped inside. The sight that greeted him sent a shiver down his spine. The guards were still at their posts, but their bodies were lifeless—no wounds, no blood. Just frozen expressions of horror.

"Genjutsu?" Jiraiya whispered, kneeling beside one of the corpses. He activated his Sage Mode, allowing natural energy to flow through him. His senses expanded, searching for residual chakra.

There.

A faint, lingering trace of foreign chakra clung to the air, dark and twisted. It was unlike anything he had felt before.

Jiraiya frowned. Not just any ordinary enemy… but who?

A soft rustling behind him snapped him to attention. He spun around, kunai at the ready.

A lone figure emerged from the shadows, cloaked in mist. A Kiri-nin, judging by the armor, though something about him felt… off. His eyes glowed eerily under the moonlight.

"You're late, Toad Sage," the man rasped. "They were waiting for you."

---

A Battle of Shadows

Jiraiya wasted no time in attacking. He lunged forward, launching a barrage of kunai infused with sealing tags. The Kiri-nin dodged with unnatural speed, weaving through the assault like a specter.

"Fast bastard," Jiraiya muttered, shifting to hand seals. Fire Style: Toad Oil Flame Bullet! He unleashed a torrent of flames, consuming the area in a fiery explosion.

For a moment, silence.

Then—

The mist thickened, swallowing the flames whole. Jiraiya's eyes narrowed. Not normal Kirigakure jutsu… something more sinister.

The air grew colder as his opponent reappeared behind him, blade flashing. Jiraiya barely dodged, twisting mid-air and landing on a tree branch.

"Who are you?" Jiraiya demanded.

The figure chuckled. "A ghost of what's to come."

Without warning, he charged again. This time, Jiraiya met him head-on, their blows sending shockwaves through the trees. The Kiri-nin was skilled—too skilled for a mere border operative.

Jiraiya caught an opening and slammed his fist into the man's chest—only for him to dissolve into mist.

"Damn it—"

A sharp pain lanced through Jiraiya's shoulder. He jumped back, blood dripping from a fresh wound.

What the hell? The attack had been impossibly fast.

"You're strong," the enemy admitted. "But fate has already shifted."

And just like that, he vanished, leaving only the thick mist behind.

Jiraiya cursed, pressing a hand to his wound. Whoever that was, he wasn't alone. And he wasn't done.

Gathering Intel

Jiraiya wasted no time returning to Konoha. He arrived at the Hokage's office, where Hiruzen was already waiting.

"You look like hell," the Third commented.

Jiraiya scowled. "I ran into something nasty. We have a problem."

He relayed everything—the dead patrol, the mysterious chakra, the Kiri-nin who moved like a ghost.

Hiruzen frowned. "A new threat?"

"Possibly," Jiraiya said. "This isn't just Kirigakure messing around. Something darker is brewing."

Hiruzen leaned back, deep in thought. "If someone is eliminating our patrols, they're testing our borders."

Jiraiya nodded. "We need to act before they make their next move."

The Third sighed. "I trust your instincts. What do you suggest?"

Jiraiya's eyes hardened. "I need to investigate deeper. But I also need someone to watch over Konoha while I'm gone."

Hiruzen nodded. "Then we'll prepare accordingly."

Strengthening the Village

Jiraiya's next stop was Minato. His student had been training non-stop, pushing himself to new limits. Jiraiya watched as Minato worked on perfecting his latest jutsu—the Flying Thunder God.

"You've gotten faster," Jiraiya noted, stepping onto the field.

Minato grinned. "Not fast enough yet."

Jiraiya smirked. "Keep that attitude. We're gonna need it."

Minato's expression turned serious. "Something's wrong, isn't it?"

Jiraiya nodded. "A new enemy is lurking in the shadows. I need to leave for a while, but in my absence, I want you to be ready."

Minato clenched his fists. "I won't let you down."

Jiraiya placed a hand on his shoulder. "I know."

Tsunade and Orochimaru also needed to be informed. Though they each had their own paths, Konoha's future depended on their strength.

Orochimaru, however, was a wild card.

---

A Dangerous Path

Jiraiya found Orochimaru in one of his hidden laboratories, pouring over forbidden scrolls. The moment their eyes met, Jiraiya knew—his friend was slipping further away.

"You're walking a dangerous road," Jiraiya said.

Orochimaru smirked. "And you're still playing the hero."

"I saw something," Jiraiya continued. "Something that makes me think we're all in danger."

Orochimaru's interest piqued. "Go on."

Jiraiya hesitated. He wanted to trust his old friend, but the darkness in Orochimaru's gaze unsettled him.

"Just… be careful," Jiraiya finally said.

Orochimaru chuckled. "I always am."

Jiraiya left with a heavy heart. He didn't have time to stop Orochimaru's descent—not yet. But he would keep an eye on him. If things got worse, he would intervene.

For now, there were bigger threats looming.

The Road Ahead

Jiraiya packed light for his journey. As he stood at Konoha's gates, he glanced back once more. He had set things in motion, but there was still much to do.

As he stepped forward, he muttered to himself:

"No matter what it takes… I won't let history repeat itself."

With that, he vanished into the night, ready to face whatever lay ahead.
