Chapter 24 - Upgrade complete!!

The moon hung high in the sky, a silver disk against the endless black of the forest. Usato stood outside the makeshift tent, a simple shelter of woven branches and animal skins. Inside, Syka slept, still mourning the loss of her grandfather, Thorne.

The meeting had been… tense. Not a full-blown brawl, but close. He'd felt the simmering resentment from some of the warriors, especially towards him, an outsider thrust into leadership.

"We need a plan," Borin growled. "We can't just wander the forest. They'll find us."

"Borin," he said, his voice low and gravelly, "I've heard tales of your skill, young one, but strength alone won't save us. We need more than brawn to survive this." He glanced at the other warriors, then back at Usato, his eyes unwavering.

"We need to regroup," Vala said, her eyes filled with worry. "We need food, shelter, and time to heal."

Usato nodded, trying to keep his own fear in check. "I agree. We need to find a place to settle, somewhere safe. But where? And how can we defend ourselves?"

"The mountains," Elara said, her voice firm. "They'll be harder to find us there."

"They'll find us anywhere," Kael said, his voice sharp. "We need to fight back, not hide."

The argument continued, voices rising, fists clenched. Usato held his ground, his voice calm but firm. He knew they all felt the weight of fear and grief, but they needed to work together. He wasn't sure how, but he had to find a way to bring them together, to lead them through this.

Finally, after a long, tense discussion, they'd come to a decision. They would search for a new home, a place to rebuild their lives, a place they could call their own. But it was a fragile peace. He could feel the doubt in their eyes, the fear lingering in the air.

He turned, seeing Kael emerge from the tent. "How is she?" Usato asked, letting out a long sigh.

Kael shrugged. "She's sleeping. Mourning for her grandfather."

Usato's breath caught in his throat. He knew how close Syka was to Thorne. It was hard to imagine how much she was hurting. He took a deep breath, forcing himself to remain calm. "I see," he said softly. "Please take care of her."

Kael bristled. "You don't need to say that. She's my friend."

Usato nodded. "Of course. I apologize. I just… I'm worried about her."

Kael shifted his weight impatiently, a hand clenching around the hilt of his dagger. "Well, I'm sure she'll be fine. She's tough. Besides, we have bigger problems to worry about." He glanced at the sky, then back at Usato, impatiently. "If you don't need anything else, I'm going to get some sleep."

Usato watched Kael leave, then turned back to the moon. He was alone. He felt it keenly, the absence of Sky. He caressed the dagger mimicked by Sky's nanobots. When can I go back to Earth? he thought. When will Sky wake up? He'd always felt secure with Sky by his side. But now… now he felt exposed, alone, lost in a world that was both beautiful and terrifying.

Usato drifted into a troubled sleep, a dark forest of worry and uncertainty swirling around him. The first pale light of dawn filtered through the forest canopy, stirring him from his slumber. He stretched, then paused, feeling a strange tingling sensation in his head. He couldn't quite place it, but it felt familiar, like a faint echo of something long forgotten. He smiled, a sense of peace settling over him.

The first hints of dawn were just starting to paint the sky when Usato was suddenly wide awake. He sat up, feeling a familiar tug on his consciousness. He looked around, confused for a moment.

"Host," a voice, almost a whisper, filled his mind. "System online."

"Sky? Is that you?"

"System update complete. New functionalities online."

"I can hear you! I thought you were down for the count."

"Software upgrade complete."

"What are they?" Usato asked eagerly.

Sky listed the abilities, from basic language translation to enhanced combat simulations.

"This is great!" Usato said excitedly.

"Wait, what about remote access?" Usato asked, a thoughtful crease forming on his forehead. "You know, controlling things… I'm not sure it'll work here. This is a world of magic, not electronics."

"Host, concerning remote access," Sky's voice continued, devoid of emotion. "Functionalities have been adjusted for current environment. Remote access is viable."

Usato frowned, still unsure. "But Sky, how can remote access even work here? This is a magical world. It's not like back on Earth."

"This environment is comprised of magical energies. System has been recalibrated for compatibility with specific aspects," Sky stated, its voice flat and monotone. "The system may be able to interface with golems or potentially manipulate the minds of beasts. The system can also analyze magical energies for tactical advantage."

"Control the minds of beasts?" Usato questioned, a mix of intrigue and skepticism swirling in his mind. "That sounds… impossible."

Sky's voice remained emotionless. "Remote access functionalities have been updated for compatibility with magical environment. Further adjustments are possible based on data acquisition."

"Alright," Usato sighed, a smile slowly spreading across his face. He stood up, stretching and adjusting his worn traveling clothes. "Let's go."

Usato and Sky stepped out of the tent. The rest of the tribe was still asleep. Usato glanced around at the slumbering figures. The mountains loomed in the distance, their peaks barely visible in the pre-dawn light.

He leaned against a rough tree trunk as the first light touched the forest. Having Sky back was a significant *RELIEF*.

"Sky," he projected mentally, wanting to keep their communication private, "you're online again. That's good."

"Affirmative, Host. System functionality restored and enhanced for current environment."

Sky's voice was a familiar presence in his mind.

"Things have been difficult," Usato thought, a *WEARINESS* settling over him.

"Thorne is dead. The survivors are looking to me for direction. We had to escape, and now we need to find a safe place. I'm not sure where to lead them."

He paused, feeling the weight of his unexpected role.

"You always had good strategies. Do you have any ideas for relocation?"

"Analyzing current environment and available data. Preliminary assessment suggests a location of interest: the vicinity of the ancient treant."

A flicker of memory sparked in Usato's mind, a vivid image of his arrival in this world – disoriented, terrified, and then… the ancient treant, its massive form seemingly a part of the forest itself.

"Host," Sky continued, its monotone voice taking on a slightly informative tone, "as per initial transmigration logs, you encountered this entity and intervened in a parasitic infestation by a Golden Cicada."

Usato's eyebrows rose in surprise.

__The treant… right. I… I did help it. I used Sky's initial energy bursts to overload that giant bug. I almost passed out afterwards…__

A thoughtful expression crossed his face.

"If that treant has any kind of… awareness, it might remember. That could actually be a safe place, a powerful ally even."

"Treant's level of spiritual awareness: unknown. System upgraded remote access capabilities may allow for interaction or influence, pending further analysis."

Usato considered this.

"So, either it remembers me and might be willing to help, or… you can try to, like, control it? That feels a bit… wrong, Sky."

"System prioritizes Host and group survival. Intervention protocols adhere to ethical parameters established within core programming."

"Alright," Usato sighed, a mix of hope and apprehension swirling within him.

"The treant's area it is, then. But it's still miles away. We need to get there safely first."

"Okay, Sky," Usato projected, a sense of renewed purpose filling him.

"That scanning ability is good for later. Right now, we need to make sure we don't stumble into any trouble on the way to the treant's location. You said you can deploy nanobots now, right?"

"Affirmative. Nanobot deployment: operational."

"Alright," Usato instructed, his mind focusing on their immediate safety.

"Deploy a recon team. I want nanobots surrounding our group, maybe a perimeter of a few hundred meters. Keep an eye out for any beasts or… anything else that might pose a threat."

A thought then struck him, a sudden curiosity about the extent of Sky's upgrades.

"Hey, Sky," he asked, a note of excitement creeping into his mental voice, "now that you're all upgraded and stuff… how many of those little guys can you actually deploy?"

"Current nanobot capacity: one hundred thousand, five hundred and sixty-seven units. Can be utilized for reconnaissance, mimicry, and other functions."

Usato's mental jaw dropped.

__One hundred thousand…?!__

He was stunned.

This upgrade was beyond anything he'd imagined.

A wave of *ELATION* washed over him, a surge of hope in the face of their desperate situation.

"That's… that's incredible, Sky!" Usato exclaimed, a genuine smile finally breaking through his worried expression.

"A hundred thousand! We can have eyes everywhere! We can create… anything, within limits, you said? This changes everything!"

"Affirmative. Enhanced capabilities confirmed."

The awe lingered, but Usato quickly grounded himself.

He looked down at his worn clothes.

"Sky," he projected, "about that mimicry… and the devouring. If I let the nanobots devour my clothes… can they, like, upgrade their defense or something? Make them tougher?"

"Affirmative. Material deconstruction and reintegration possible for enhanced durability. Potential for passive skill acquisition upon reconstruction, based on environmental interaction."

Usato, intrigued, followed through with the process, resulting in his "Minor Environmental Resistance" tunic.

He then resumed his basic Karate stances, a familiar anchor in this strange world.

Bored after a while, he asked Sky:

"Hey, Sky, you know those RPG games? Could you make a character profile for me?"
