Chapter 13 - Banquet II

As the tribal dance reached its climax, the villagers cheered and applauded, their faces flushed with excitement. Thorne, the Village Leader, smiled warmly and gestured for everyone to take their seats.

"The time has come to introduce our honored guest, Lord Usato, to the esteemed members of our tribe," Thorne announced, his voice booming across the gathering.

As the villagers sat down, Thorne began to introduce the various elders and dignitaries of the Evergreen tribe. Usato listened attentively, trying to commit the names and faces to memory.

Just as Thorne was about to conclude the introductions, a tall, lean figure emerged from the shadows. Usato's eyes narrowed as he recognized the man who had manipulated him into fighting Kael yesterday.

"Gorthok's cousin, Vorgath," Thorne said. "A skilled hunter and warrior."

Vorgath's eyes locked onto Usato, a cold, calculating glint in their depths. Usato sensed a malevolent presence emanating from the man, and his instincts screamed warning.

Gorthok, who was standing nearby, shot Vorgath a warning glance before turning to Usato.

Next to Vorgath stood an elderly man with a stern expression, his eyes seeming to bore into Usato's very soul. Thorne nodded and said, "And we have Elder Thornek."

Thornek's gaze lingered on Usato, his expression a mixture of disdain and warning. "Lord Usato," he said, his voice low and gravelly. "I trust you're enjoying our hospitality."

Usato sensed a subtle undercurrent of insincerity in Thornek's words, a hint that the elderly man was hiding something behind his polite facade. Thornek's eyes seemed to gleam with a knowing light, as if he were privy to secrets that Usato could only guess at.

Standing beside Thornek was Syka, who regarded Usato with a calm, measured gaze. "Lord Usato," she said, her voice poised and respectful. "It's a pleasure to see you again."

Usato nodded in response, sensing a deep intelligence and wisdom behind Syka's composed exterior. He couldn't help but wonder, however, if Syka was aware of the subtle undercurrents of tension that seemed to emanate from her granduncle, Thornek.

Noticing the abnormal atmosphere,Tribe Leader Thorne, subtly defused the situation with a warm smile. "Let us not forget the true spirit of our gathering," he said, his voice booming across the gathering. "Tonight, we come together to celebrate our unity and strength. Let us feast, sing, and dance together, as one people."

The villagers responded enthusiastically, cheering and applauding as the music and dancing resumed. Usato, relieved that the tension had been broken, took his seat and began to eat.

As he savored the delicious flavors of the tribal cuisine, he couldn't help but notice Kael, who was sitting across from him. Kael's eyes were throwing daggers at him, his expression a mask of hostility. Usato met his gaze calmly, refusing to back down.

Just as the silence between them was becoming uncomfortable, a burly man with a thick beard and a booming laugh approached Usato. "Greetings, Lord Usato," he said, his voice dripping with warmth. "I am Thaggar, a humble warrior of the Evergreen tribe."

As Thaggar introduced himself, his eyes wandered to Syka, who was sitting beside Thornek. His gaze lingered on her, a lewd glint in his eye. Usato noticed the look and felt a surge of discomfort. Syka, however, seemed oblivious to Thaggar's gaze, her expression serene and composed.

Thornek, on the other hand, noticed Thaggar's look and shot him a warning glance. Thaggar, chastened, quickly looked away, his face flushing with embarrassment.

As the night wore on, the music and dancing grew more lively, and the villagers began to let loose. Usato, seated at the head table, was forced to endure the inane chatter of Thaggar, who had planted himself beside Usato.

Thaggar, a burly man with a thick beard and a booming laugh, seemed determined to make small talk with Usato, asking him bland questions about his journey to the Evergreen tribe. Usato replied politely, but curtly, his responses barely concealed his disinterest.

Just as Thaggar was launching into another tedious anecdote, a group of hot-blooded young men caught Usato's eye. They were friends of Kael's, and it was clear that they were not convinced by Kael's decision to yield to Usato.

One of them, a tall, muscular young man with a scar above his left eyebrow, stepped forward, his eyes flashing with challenge.

Tuko, a tall, muscular young man with a scar above his left eyebrow, stepped forward, his eyes locked onto Usato's. "Lord Usato," he said, his voice tinged with a mix of gratitude and aggression. "I want to thank you for healing our tribesman's wounds. Your skills as a healer are truly impressive."

Tuko's expression darkened, his eyes flashing with challenge. "However, we've heard a lot about your combat skills, and we're not convinced. You see, in our tribe, we value bravery and strength above all else. And we're not sure you have what it takes."

Tuko cracked his knuckles, a sly grin spreading across his face. "So, I'm asking you, Lord Usato... care to prove yourself?"

The young man's friends nodded in agreement, their faces set in determined expressions. Usato sensed a subtle undercurrent of aggression emanating from them, and he knew that he had to tread carefully.

Thornek, noticing the tension, shot the young men a warning glance. "Enough, Tuko," he growled. "Lord Usato is our guest. We will not challenge him."

But as he spoke, Thornek's eyes flicked to Usato, a subtle glint of malice in their depths. It was a fleeting moment, but Usato caught the hint. Thornek was warning the young men, but he was also subtly goading Usato, daring him to take up the challenge.

Usato's instincts prickled with unease. He sensed that Thornek was playing a deeper game, one that involved manipulating the situation to his own advantage. But Usato's attention was drawn back to Tuko, who was still spoiling for a fight.

"Why not, Elder Thornek?" Tuko demanded, his voice rising in defiance. "If Lord Usato is as strong as he claims, he should be able to handle a little challenge from us."

The villagers began to take sides, some urging Tuko and his friends to back down, while others egged them on. Usato, sensing the situation spiraling out of control, decided to take matters into his own hands.

Usato noticed Elder Thornek's hidden meaning, but he dismissed it, choosing not to take the bait. Instead, he silently queried his nanobot system, seeking an analysis of the situation.

"Sky, assess the possible outcomes if I accept this fight," he thought, his nanobots quickly responding with a stream of data.

"Host, accepting the fight poses a moderate to high risk of physical harm," the nanobots replied, their digital voice echoing in his mind. "However, refusing the challenge may be perceived as a sign of weakness, potentially undermining your authority within the tribe."

Usato nodded to himself, understanding that he had no choice but to accept Tuko's challenge. He stood up, his eyes locking onto Tuko's.

"I accept your challenge, Tuko," Usato declared, his voice firm and resolute.

The tribesmen erupted into cheers, their faces alight with excitement. They pounded their fists on the tables, shouting Tuko's name and Usato's, their voices echoing through the night air.

Thornek's eyes gleamed with a knowing light, a subtle smile playing on his lips. Syka, on the other hand, looked concerned, her eyes fixed on Usato with a worried expression.

Tuko grinned, cracking his knuckles in anticipation. "Let's end this, Lord Usato," he sneered, his eyes flashing with aggression.

The villagers began to clear a space, forming a circle around Usato and Tuko. The air was electric with tension, the tribesmen eager to see the two men clash.
