Chapter 10 - THE BOON I

SWOOSH

A spell fired by the room sailed pass my head as I ducked beneath it, I have found the room of requirements after a month in Hogwarts. The friendship I have formed with my friends, their carefree behaviour was pulling me in a false sense of security.

It was a horrifying dream that pulled me out of it, I still vividly remember it. I was walking in the aftermath of a fight between two Wizards, the destruction they havocked caused me to come out of my comfort zone. It occurred towards the end of my first month, on 26th September to be exact.

After that I have abandoned the thought of taking it easy for the first year. On 29th September I found this room. It has been helping me practice combat. Till now I have only practiced dodging, which I want to perfect before I move on to learning destructive and lethal magic.

SWIOSH

Another spell went sailing above his head, these spells were not actually spells but just lights going about, that is not to say it won't do damage once hit it would sting like hell but they weren't like the spells used now-a-days, there was no intent in them but just pure magic and their unique property making their impact sting fir the target. It was just perfect for training how to doge like every other things this room could do. After another hour or training, I went out of the room willed it to change in a bathroom with a large bath, filled with water, this water to had special magic energy which made anyone having a dip in it heal faster. Which once again was perfect for easing the pain of the stings.

Not that I get hit more than once or twice, but it was relaxing none the less.

After the bath I went and changed into the clothes I brought with me. As I am still a first year I only train on Saturday and Sunday morning when everyone else is fast asleep.

Finished with my training I went to my common room to wait for Edgar and Eleanor to wake up, while possibly doing some light reading.

After some sets of stairs, twists, turns and a riddle later I was back in the common room. There were already some older students there, but as it was pretty common for some people to go on walks early morning, no one batted and eye at my arrival.

Taking a book on common battle tips I went to one of the couches to take seat. No one was nosy enough to ruin someone else's reading time by asking unnecessary questions about what someone was reading or why. Hence, I was not disturbed till I noticed that Edgar was already making his way downstairs. Moving up to place the book back by levitating it to the bookshelf from which I took it, I called out to him, "Good morning Edgar, slept well?" to which he just nodded and mumbled a quiet, "Good morning" clearly still sleepy.

I was even surprised he got here earlier than Eleanor, but Eleanor does take time while bathing so maybe she was also on the way. My guess was on the cue as I saw her coming down the stairs.

She greeted us first , "Good morning, Marcus, Edgar." She nodded at each of us.

We echoed back with a, "Good morning." This time Edgar fully awake.

"Lets move out to the Great Hall." I said, and we three went out of the common room through a winding staircase and then straight to the Great Hall.

Their we ate our breakfast in silence, the novelty of attending Hogwarts since the first few days expired. Now all we had was the burden of pending assignments in every subject. Not that they were left pending for a long time. We submitted each well before deadline, but it was to much work, searching through the library, looking for things to make each of our essays standout.

Henry and Elizabeth being typical Gryffindors had already given up in the first few weeks, now they just right whatever is necessary, still getting good grades but not O's.

That is also one of the reason we just hangout on Friday evenings to explore the still massively unknown castle. Every exploring session results in something new. From mystery halls to hidden rooms and passage ways we more than once stumbled across some leading outside, some leading to different parts of castle or some just ending in dead-ends.

After our quiet breakfast, we moved out towards the Great lake. It was almost winters now in but a few days the lake will start freezing then we first years wont Allowed to go near it. So for the remaining few days of our time left near the lake for this year we decided to go their whenever we got free time. It wasn't even needed to be discussed we just cleaned up and left for the lake.

Crossing the entrance of the castle facing the forbidden forest, we moved across the green courtyard and sat at the bank of the lake.

Well Eleanor sat and me and Edgar threw rocks making them bounce across the lake surface.

"You are cheating again with you wandless magic!!" Edgar exclaimed seeing my stones go extra far, I have already shown them that I could move things around without my wand. At first they wanted to learn it themselves but seeing as it was something which needed 80% or more control of they total magic energy, they gave up to try later when they reached that level.

I laughed and said, "Prove it if you can." With a cheeky smile.

He just sighed and let it go, as he knew he couldn't prove it himself, I was just that good at utilising my magic that even most professors would have trouble noticing, they would notice but they also will have to place efforts in it.

We heard Eleanor laughing behind us, which caused us to smile too.

"Do whatever you want I will go sit back with Eleanor, at least she doesn't cheats." Edgar said with a buff and sat back down with Eleanor.

I chuckled at his antics and went back to making my stones go as far as possible. This was a good practice for me to better my control over my magic reserves. Till now I can only use 86% of it. The reason behind this was obviously my overly massive reserves.

After spending few hours there just messing around with each other we went inside the castle as it was time for lunch. Great Hall was as filled with merriment as usual. People just laughing at each other or just enjoying the cooking of house elves.

We had our usual lunch and then went to our common room to wait it out till dinner and do our own tasks, I wanted to explore one of the boons I had chosen as it was high time I focused on them. The boon I was talking about was the complete mastery in any magical language.

I do hope it is what I think it is, talking to snakes or any other magical creature is cool, whatever anyone else thinks does not matter.

Going to the library section I searched if there was any book talking about the history of magical languages. I came across one titled 'Language of magical Creatures and known abilities related to them' there was no author mentioned, my interest piqued I took it with me to one of the couches, opening it I read-

**Language of Magical Creatures and Known Abilities Related to Them**

**Introduction**

The magical world is teeming with a diverse array of creatures, each possessing its own unique language and means of communication. Understanding these languages not only enriches our knowledge of magical beings but also enhances our ability to interact with them. This book explores the languages of various magical creatures, notable individuals who have mastered these languages, and the abilities associated with them.

**Chapter 1: The Language of Mermen**

Mermen, the aquatic counterparts of mermaids, inhabit the depths of oceans and lakes. Their language, known as **Aquatic Tongue**, is a melodic blend of whistles, clicks, and hums that resonate through water. Mermen communicate not only with each other but also with other aquatic creatures, forming a complex social structure within their underwater realms.

**Notable Speaker:**

**Merlin** - The legendary wizard was said to have the ability to converse with mermen, forging alliances that allowed him to gain knowledge of the ocean's secrets. His mastery of Aquatic Tongue is often cited as one of the reasons for his unparalleled wisdom in magical matters.

**Chapter 2: The Language of Snakes**

The language of snakes, known as **Parseltongue**, is a hissing, sibilant form of communication that allows speakers to converse with serpents. This language is characterized by its unique phonetics, which mimic the sounds made by snakes themselves.

**Notable Speaker:**

**Salazar Slytherin** - One of the four founders of Hogwarts, Salazar was renowned for his ability to speak Parseltongue. This rare gift allowed him to communicate with snakes and understand their behavior, which he believed was essential for a true wizard. His legacy continues to influence the Slytherin house, where the ability to speak Parseltongue is often viewed as a mark of distinction. This is a pretty common ability in India but no other apart from the line of Salazar could speak it, as it is completely hereditary.

**Chapter 3: The Language of Dragons**

Dragons are among the most majestic and powerful creatures in the magical world. Their language, known as **Draconic**, is a complex system of roars, growls, and body language. Each dragon species has its own dialect, influenced by its habitat and culture.

**Notable Speaker:**

**Merlin** - In addition to his ability to communicate with mermen, Merlin was also said to have the unique talent of speaking Draconic. His rapport with dragons allowed him to gain their trust and knowledge, which he used to protect the realm from various threats. Legends tell of his ability to calm even the fiercest dragons with his words. No one since him has been recorded of being able to talk to dragons despite many who claimed they could but got eaten, burned or got pooped kn by the dragons.

**Chapter 4: The Language of Centaurs**

Centaurs, known for their wisdom and connection to nature, communicate through a combination of spoken language and intricate body movements. Their language, referred to as **Centaurean**, is rich in symbolism and often involves gestures that convey deeper meanings.

**Notable Speaker:**

Anyone can learn it.

**Chapter 5: The Language of House-Elves**

House-elves possess their own unique language, known as **Elf-Speak**, which is characterized by a rapid, high-pitched tone. This language is often filled with expressions of servitude and loyalty, reflecting the cultural values of house-elves.

Hippogriffs, majestic creatures with the body of a horse and the wings and head of an eagle, communicate through a series of vocalizations and body language. This book serves as a guide for those interested in the languages of magical creatures and the remarkable individuals who have mastered them. Whether you are a budding wizard or a seasoned witch, the knowledge contained within these pages will enrich your understanding of the magical realm.

It has many other pages going in detail about differences between a hereditary or acquired ability to converse with magical creatures.

It also mentioned that powerful languages like dragon tongue or parsel tongue could be used as runes and were totally writable with the scripts of parsel tongue being a closely guarded secret of Indian ministry and the dragon tongue script lost to time.

After noting down all important bits from it on a spare sheet of parchment I placed the book back where it belonged.

Noticing the time I saw it was already time for dinner me being immersed in my reading left me completely unaware of the time passing.

I went out of the seating area to see If I could find my friends luckily I saw them waiting around the exit of the common room.

Eleanor noticed me first and smiled at me saying out loud, "You were no doubt, buried in some random book reading about totally random things not even related to you." Hearing her say that Edgar also turned around spotted me and smiled.

"I agree with her." He said.

"Guilty as charged," I agreed without a bit of shame. " Now let's go and eat all that reading has made me hungry." I said and moved out of the common room, having my friends trail behind me hurriedly.

We reached the Great Hall, and ate our dinner with Edgar complaining about random stuff he had gone through while he was alone, peeves had gotten him. It was hilarious hearing him complain.

After our dinner we all just went to common room and from there directly to our respective dorms to sleep early as tomorrow they would have to start the assignment they were given to do. I had already completed them, but I wanted to have extra hours of training to check out if my guess about my boon allowing me to speak to snakes and such was correct for that I would have to go to forbidden forest when no one was around as it was the only place I could find snakes, or I could just learn the snake summoning spell but it could go wrong if I put too much magic in it.

Thinking all the minor things that came to my mind I went off to sleep eager about my trip to forbidden forest Tomorrow.
