Chapter 8 - Chapter 8: Shadows of the past

Selena followed Kade and Raven as they rushed toward the sound of the howl. Her heart pounded, every instinct screaming at her to be prepared.

They stopped at the edge of the pack's territory. A group of wolves—outsiders—stood in the clearing, their presence sending waves of tension through the air.

One of them stepped forward, a scar running down his left cheek. "You've been keeping something that doesn't belong to you."

Selena's breath hitched as his eyes landed on her.

"Her."

Kade's stance remained unreadable, but Selena saw the slight shift in his weight, the way his hands curled just slightly—a silent sign that he was ready for a fight.

"She's one of us now," Kade said coldly.

The scarred wolf chuckled darkly. "She was never meant to be one of you."

Selena clenched her fists. "Who are you?"

His smirk widened. "You don't remember, do you?" He tilted his head. "Your parents never told you the truth?"

Something deep inside her stirred—something unfamiliar yet eerily familiar.

"I don't know you," she said, but doubt crept into her voice.

"Not yet," he replied. "But you will."

Without another word, he turned, his pack disappearing into the shadows.

Selena exhaled shakily, her mind racing.

What truth was he talking about?

Kade placed a firm hand on her shoulder. "Forget him."

But she couldn't.

Because for the first time, she realized there was something about herself she didn't fully understand.

Selena's sleep was restless that night. Every time she closed her eyes, flashes of something unfamiliar—memories she didn't recognize—flashed in her mind. A voice whispering her name. A shadowed figure standing over her.

Morning came too soon.

When she emerged from her cabin, she found Kade waiting for her. His expression was unreadable, but there was something different in his eyes.

"We need to talk."

She swallowed. "About what?"

"You."

Her pulse quickened. "Me?"

Kade gestured for her to follow, leading her away from the pack's main grounds. They stopped near a small stream, where the sounds of running water filled the silence between them.

"You've felt it, haven't you?" he asked.

Selena hesitated. "Felt what?"

"The power inside you. The pull toward something bigger than yourself."

She opened her mouth to deny it, but the words wouldn't come. Because he was right.

"That rogue last night—he wasn't just testing us. He was testing you."

Selena's throat tightened. "Why?"

Kade exhaled. "Because you're not who you think you are."

A shiver ran down her spine. "Then who am I?"

Kade's golden eyes locked onto hers. "That's what we need to find out."

And in that moment, Selena realized—her fight had only just begun.Selena's breath hitched as Kade's words settled in. Not who you think you are.

A thousand questions swirled in her mind, but one rose above the rest.

"What do you mean?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.

Kade glanced around, as if making sure no one else was listening. "There are things about your past—about you—that have been hidden. For a reason."

Her pulse pounded. "Then tell me."

His jaw tightened. "I don't have all the answers. But I know this—if that rogue was looking for you, others will come too."

A cold dread settled over her.

She was being hunted.
