Chapter 1 - 1

To say you were gifted was such an understatement. You were a civilian not shown in the manga, and because of that, you were somehow self aware of the fact that you even were in a manga, and because of that, you'd figured out every event to happen in the manga itself. Getting to the "characters", or rather, your friends, was tough, because for some random girl to make friends with an entire legion of gangsters, it was very difficult to get into the sort of "club".

However, the more you realized this self awareness could save lives, the more you wanted to help. Of course, you had to be careful - One of the drawbacks of this power was that whoever you told about your power, also became self aware. But yet, for the main "characters", they were only self aware between the events in which they were shown, and would forget everything that happened in the between-time. Because of this, you mainly kept it to yourself, to protect others from the stress such a position of power could cause.

That all changed when you bumped into Baji after one of Toman's meetings. "Hey, watch where you're-" He cuts himself off, immediately being able to tell that something was off about you. "-going. You look... strangely familiar. Have I seen you before?" He questions, now interested in you. It was instant, the way he was able to catch on that you weren't exactly some innocent girl who had accidentally made her way into Toman territory. No, he knew you were one of them, even if you weren't in Toman, you had the right spirit. When you respond with an "I don't know", he shrugs it off and gets on his bike, leaving to go home - His mother was definitely not going to be happy that he was getting home late.

After several run ins with him, he noticed the way you lingered, hovered, watched over his every move, as if you were stalking him. Finally, one day, he confronts you in the halls at your school. This day just so happened to be August 3rd, the same day of the involuntary brawl between Toman and Moebius, which would lead to the stabbing and near-death of Draken. "Are you following me? What's going on?" He huffs in irritation. That's when you admit your power to him. You couldn't help it, it just rolled out, there was no stopping it. After you'd finished telling him, you'd tried to do damage control, trying to laugh it off as a prank or a joke. But he knew better, he could see it in the way your eyes shifted to every exit of the room, the way your body was tensed, as if ready to make a run for it at the drop of a hat.

"You're not joking. I believe you." He speaks quietly, trying to make sure no one around the two of you could hear the conversation. "What's got you so on edge? Is today important? What's going on today that's got you so stressed?" He whispers more seriously, now understanding that you truly weren't pulling his leg, and that what you had said was true. "Moebius is going to attack Toman tonight. It's more complex than that, but... Draken is going to be stabbed." You explain, relieved to know that someone, especially someone in such close quarters with the rest of the gang, was on your side. When you continue your explanation, stating that Peh-yan was unhappy with Pah-Chin being in jail so he was going to attack Draken, and furthermore that Kiyomasa was the one doing the dirty work later that night at the festival, Baji sighs, considering what you were saying.

"Is that so? I'll be sure to keep an eye on him. You said that it was going down at the festival tonight? How about you come with me to the festival, and you can tell me when I need to be on guard." He was asking you out, in a vague manner. When you innocently agree, he gives you a soft smile, "Great, see you tonight." Followed by the sound of his footsteps drifting off as he walked down the hall to his next class.

Later that evening, at the festival, everything happened just as you had predicted. However, it went exactly as it did in the manga, because the second Baji arrived at the fight, the memory of what happened earlier in the school had completely slipped his mind, as if he was on autopilot. The following day at school, he pulls you aside and questions you on what happened and why he couldn't remember you being at the festival. When you explain to him that the self awareness only lasted between each event, each canonical time he was shown, he huffs in frustration, "So you're telling me that I can know about these things, but I can't actually do anything to stop 'em? What a drag. I suppose I'll just have to tough it out, huh?" He mumbles the last part to himself as he walks off yet again, likely to the next class, or his lunch period.

Over time, your friendship with him blossomed into a loving relationship, which was sadly coming to a close due to recent events. On the day before his initiation into Valhalla, you come clean and explain everything - What was going to happen to him, what was going to happen to Toman, what the future was going to be like without him. Without thinking twice, he simply hugs you, whispering "It's going to be okay". Despite knowing it was going to go exactly how the manga did, he wasn't afraid - It was inevitable, unavoidable, so there was no reason in worrying about it.

It was now an hour before the brawl between Toman and Valhalla on October 31st. Baji had you in his room, curled up in his arms on his bed, the windows shut tightly, allowing very little light in. "It's going to be okay." He whispered again, despite knowing that was the farthest thing from the truth at the moment. He brushes his fingers over your face gently, trying to comfort you. He wasn't upset over what was going to happen to him, he was worried about what it was going to do to you.

The time had dwindled down to the last five minutes. By now, you were reduced to a puddle of tears in his arms. He eases his thumbs over your cheeks, just under your eyes, catching tears on his fingertips as they fall. "It's going to be okay." He persisted. "This isn't goodbye, this is just... See you later, you know?" He smiles sadly, trying to comfort you, show you it was okay, that he was going to be okay. "Don't cry for me. I want you to laugh. I want my last memories with you to be happy ones." He whispers softly, gently holding your face in his hands, his forehead pressed against yours. He tries everything in his power to make you feel at least a little bit better, but it wasn't working.

Finally, the last fifty-nine seconds were ticking away far more quickly than you'd like. "I love you." He whispers, looking into your eyes, trying to convey how deeply he meant it. It was not a surface level love - He truly loved you, every part of you, from your head down to your toes, from your spirit to your soul, from your body to your being, your core essence. "I love you too," You manage to get out between sniffles and gasps. "I know." He responds, gently pressing one last kiss to your forehead, then the tip of your nose, then each side of your face, then finally, your lips. As the last five seconds run out, he mumbles, "Don't forget me."

When he walks out of the room, out of the apartment, out to the junkyard the fight was taking place in, you couldn't help but follow. You knew you couldn't interfere, as it would risk everyone discovering the curse that was the self awareness you and Baji shared. It wasn't long into the fight before it happened - the first hit, Kazutora ramming the knife into Baji's back. That wasn't what made you cry, what made you cry was the killing blow, Baji lodging the knife into his own stomach, effectively giving himself a fatal stab wound.

Without thinking, you run to the scene, kneeling at his side and scooping his bleeding form into your arms, tears falling from your face and softly landing on his own. "I'm sorry, I'm so sorry-" You start, only to be cut off by Baji coughing up blood, before weakly managing to whisper, "Who- are you-" between coughs and gasps for air, as he was suffocating on his own blood. Before you could answer, he grins weakly, "Are you an angel? Sent from the heavens to take me away?" To which you simply laugh at through your own tears, holding him as he was dying in your grasp.

When he finally goes limp, everyone's attention diverts to you. Smiley is the first one to speak up, his somewhat deep voice questioning "Who the hell are you?", as did everyone else's. Realizing you looked like an idiot caught in the middle of a gang turf war, you panic, trying to come up with a reasonable lie. As you struggle to come up with a convincing excuse, Chifuyu speaks up, "She's close with Baji, let her grieve, give her some air!" As he says that, the chatter between the two gangs pipes down, leaving you a mess amidst the battle. "You're different. Special. Baji saw something in you. You'll be a good ally." Mikey walks towards you, completely disregarding Kazutora and Hanma for the time being, "Welcome to Toman, new girl."
