Chapter 3 - The offer

The drive felt like a blur. Nora didn't speak as the car glided smoothly down the road, the sound of the engine and the occasional hum of tires on asphalt filling the silence between her and Kay Jameson. The warmth inside the car contrasted with the biting cold outside, and Nora couldn't help but sink deeper into the plush seat, trying to calm her racing thoughts. She had no idea where she was going, but she knew it was nowhere near the broken house she had left behind.

Kay glanced at her every now and then, but for the most part, she remained quiet, her fingers tracing the edge of her leather purse, a gentle smile on her lips. She looked like someone who had everything someone who could fix Nora's life without breaking a sweat. Her polished appearance was flawless, but there was something behind her eyes something calculated and sharp.

Finally, the car slowed, pulling into a long, winding driveway. The house that loomed before her took Nora's breath away. It wasn't just big. It was a mansion. The kind of house you saw in glossy magazines, the kind you only dreamed of when you were a kid. The lights outside illuminated the towering structure, casting shadows on the manicured lawn that stretched out before them. It was a dream... or a nightmare.

"Welcome to the Jameson estate," Kay said softly as she turned to Nora. "This will be your home for as long as you need. Please, don't feel pressured. But we can help you. We can change everything."

Nora swallowed hard, the reality of the situation slowly sinking in. The wealth. The promise. The expectations.

The car stopped in front of the massive front door, which opened automatically as they approached. Kay led the way, her heels clicking on the marble floor as she moved gracefully inside. Nora followed hesitantly, trying to hold her composure despite the overwhelming feeling of being out of place.

Kay ushered her into the living room, where a massive chandelier hung from the ceiling, casting a golden glow over the room. Velvet sofas, art on the walls, and towering windows that gave a perfect view of the perfectly trimmed garden outside. Nora felt small, almost invisible, in such an extravagant space.

"Please, sit," Kay said, gesturing to the plush sofa in front of her. "Can I get you something to drink?"

Nora shook her head. Her stomach was tied in knots, her mind a whirlwind of confusion. But she didn't want to seem rude, so she forced herself to sit.

Kay lowered herself onto the opposite sofa, watching her intently. "I know this is all very sudden, Nora. But I can see potential in you. You have an aura about you—a strength that's rare."

Nora didn't know how to respond. Was she supposed to be flattered? Or was this just part of the game they were playing?

"I have a proposal for you," Kay continued, her tone now much more serious. "I need you to become my surrogate. My husband and I can't have children—at least, not without serious risks. I can't afford to tarnish my career with pregnancy. You're young. You're healthy. You're perfect."

Nora's breath caught in her throat. The word "surrogate" hung in the air like an unspoken command. The promise of money, of a future beyond her wildest dreams, flashed before her eyes. But her chest tightened, the reality of what she was being asked to do sinking in.

"I… I don't understand," Nora stammered, her voice barely above a whisper. "Why me?"

Kay leaned forward, her eyes unwavering. "Because you're strong, and because you have nothing left to lose. We're offering you an opportunity—one you won't get anywhere else. If you agree to carry our child, you'll have everything you've ever dreamed of. The money. The home. The life. And more. We'll make sure you're taken care of—no matter what."

The words hung in the air like a tempting but dangerous fruit. Nora's heart pounded in her chest. She had always dreamed of a better life, of escaping the cycles of poverty and neglect that had defined her existence. But this? This wasn't just a favor. It was a trade—a deal that could cost her more than she ever imagined.

Kay stood and moved toward the glass doors, which opened to the sprawling garden outside. "Think about it, Nora. We can give you everything. But we need you to be more than just our maid. We need you to be the mother of our child."

Nora looked at Kay, her mind swirling with doubt and possibility. Her dreams had always been tied to law school, to making a name for herself. But what if this was her one chance to escape the life she had been trapped in for so long?

"Take your time," Kay added, as if reading her thoughts. "But don't take too long. This offer doesn't come twice."
