Chapter 9 - The Actor

Jack's POV

It was done.

I watched as she walked out of my office and headed home. I didn't have to be worried about her. I knew Taylor was going to get her home.

I didn't expect her to dance but I didn't expect her to look the way she did after the contract was signed either. She looked sadder when she left than when she came in and I couldn't help being curious about her emotions.

I shook my head. I thought she wanted me to take responsibility for the pregnancy and didn't understand why she looked like she got the last thing she wanted.

I didn't think I could ever understand women.

I pushed her out of my mind. I didn't have the time to be worried about her. I had a lot of work to do, work I could confidently focus on now that it was certain I was going to end up with the company.

My phone rang twenty minutes later and I swore at the annoying ringtone. I hissed out, hating myself that I hadn't remembered to change the ringtone.

Maybe I will leave the ringtone after all. I thought as I saw the caller ID.

I swore as I placed the phone to my ears, wondering if he had a spy cam in my office. He never called when I was with someone in the office.

"Hello, grandfather." I said, trying to be as excited as I could.

"Don't pretend you are happy to hear from me." He snorted. "I know how much you hate to be disturbed when you are working."

Why did he bother calling when he knew that? I grinned.

"I called because you won't answer any calls except mine." He replied, proving once again that he was a wizard.

"What is the problem, grandpa?"

"Do you want there to be a problem?"

"I don't."

"Why was that the question you asked though?"

I was tired of the word games with him. I sighed. "I didn't mean it that way. I'm curious to know why you called."

"I'm curious to know when you are introducing your fiancee to me. I hope you didn't think I was joking."

I knew he wasn't joking. He wouldn't have put his business down on the line for a joke. "I will bring her to you soon."

"Make that soon tomorrow."

"Tomorrow?" I gasped out.

I wasn't ready. I had a lot to do.

"Yes. I'm getting discharged tomorrow and want to throw a party to celebrate my health. What other time to introduce your girl to the family than that?"

Just shoot me now, gramps. I groaned. "What time?" I asked. It wasn't like I had a choice.

"Eight tomorrow night. Don't be late."

"You know I'm not the tardy type." I almost blurted out that John was the tardy one but kept my mouth shut. I already got my means of achieving the company, I didn't have to throw my brother under the bus again.

"And you better come with your girl and not a paid actress."

He knew me too well. If he was with me, I would have blushed.

"I dare not."

Katherine was being paid to show up as my girl but she wasn't an actress so I believed I was fine. I wondered if I should tell him that she was pregnant for me to convince him that I wasn't coming with a paid actress but decided against it.

He would ask me why I wasn't already making plans to get married to her before he asked and I didn't want to get into details.

"See you tomorrow night then, son. I know I can't be so lucky to see you before then."

"I have work to do." I replied, ignoring his scheme to force me to be home tonight.

I was going to see him tomorrow, I didn't have to make the trip twice. All I was going to get if I go home was have an uncomfortable dinner and try too hard not to hit my brother's face with my fist.

No, I wasn't in the mood for that.

I picked up my phone and rang Taylor up.

"Where are you?" I asked the moment he picked up.

"On my way back to the office."

"How far are you? Are you closer to the office or to Katherine's house?"

"I'm closer to the office."

Wow. That was fast.

"Come to the office then. You have to pick me up."

"I don't think you have an appointment scheduled anytime soon."

If I never hated how smart his brain was and how he memorized my schedule everyday, I did now.

"I do now."

"I will be there in five."

"Make it three."

"Is there a problem?"

"There might be."

He clicked off the call. Even though I would have preferred that I was the one who did that, I wasn't offended because I knew he had done that to speed here.

"Where are we going to?" Taylor asked as he walked into my office.

"We are going to pick Katherine."

"Katherine?" he gasped, looking at me like I had gone crazy.

He wasn't the only one. The situation was driving me nuts as well.

"I would have told you to get her and come here but you were already almost here. Let's go. I think I'm done for the day."

He looked at his wristwatch and I would have found that amusing if I wasn't in a mood. He knew how much I hated closing early for the day. I never even left the office until nine in the night most times but now I was ready to close for the day before noon.

"Are you sick?" he asked, his voice ringing with worry.

"I'm not."

He arched his eyebrows at him, trying to figure out what was wrong with me. There was a time I had been sick but still came to work because I didn't want to postpone the appointment with the client.

"We are going shopping." I informed him before he asked if I was dying.

His eyes glinted with humor and I had no doubt he was struggling not to laugh at me. I would have found him amusing too if he was me.

"My grandfather is throwing a party tomorrow night and wants to meet Katherine."

He already knew of my deal with Katherine.

"Oh!"

"Yes." I nodded. "I don't know how classy her wardrobe is so we need to fix that today. Book an appointment at the department store and with the hair stylist. I don't know long it will take us and that is why I cleared off my schedule."

"Good choice." He nodded. "Let's go make your girl a beauty."

"She is not my girl." I replied immediately, blushing the moment the words were out of my mouth.

"She is your girl on paper." He snorted at me. "You better be careful with your tongue. You don't want to deny her like that if someone calls her your girl. You might as well tell everyone you are trying to deceive them."

I blushed, knowing that he was right. I had to start thinking of Katherine as my girl if I wanted to make this work.

I didn't think I had ever claimed a girl as mine and hoped it would be easy to do. I reminded myself that I had to make everyone believe I was crazy in love with her.

There was nothing I wouldn't do to get the company in my hands.
