School's out—Ninja Academy is officially on break!
Holding his report card with a satisfied smile, Veigar Koshima left the academy alone.
As expected, he had achieved perfect scores in every subject.
But today, Veigar had something else to do. He had already requested a leave of absence from Tomiyasu Saburo.
Returning home, he walked straight to the second floor, standing before a door that had remained shut for over a year. Taking a deep breath, he spoke softly.
"I did it. And I even got a perfect score."
A bright smile spread across Veigar's face as he continued,
"I'm coming in."
Although Veigar had inherited everything from the original Veigar Koshima, he was well aware that he was essentially an outsider occupying this life.
Creak...
As he pushed open the long-sealed door, dust blanketed the entire room. But Veigar paid no mind—his only focus was retrieving that one thing.
The relic left behind by Takaaki Koshima—his late father—was something his mother had always kept safe.
Before her passing, Veigar's mother had told him that his father had left something for him. However, she had made him promise that he would only enter this room and retrieve it after completing his first year at the academy.
Over the past year, Veigar had countless opportunities to break that promise and take whatever it was. But he had remained true to his word.
Following his memories, Veigar searched the dust-laden hidden compartment within the wardrobe, eventually retrieving the relic left behind by Takaaki Koshima.
A rectangular wooden box, sealed with a Fūinjutsu barrier.
Veigar carried the box back to his room, placing it on his desk.
"Release."
The sealing technique used on the box was a basic one—something even the academy had covered in lessons. Breaking it was simple.
With a basic unsealing technique, Veigar easily lifted the seal and finally saw what his father had left behind.
Inside the box lay a ninjatō approximately sixty centimeters in length, with a forty-five-centimeter blade. Alongside it were two scrolls and an aged, yellowed notebook, bearing the name Takaaki Koshima on its cover.
Veigar wasn't an expert in blades, but unsheathing the ninjatō revealed its sharpness at a glance—it was incredibly well-maintained.
Setting the weapon aside, he picked up the notebook. Flipping through its pages, he quickly realized it was his father's personal training journal from his academy days.
It detailed his struggles and insights in mastering the Three Basic Jutsu (Clone Jutsu, Transformation Jutsu, and Substitution Jutsu). But what truly caught Veigar's attention was an entry on a fundamental Teleportation Jutsu, something only taught during the second year at the academy.
Putting the notebook down, he unrolled the first scroll, his eyes widening in sheer delight.
"Secret Art: Human Body Enhancement Technique."
A secret technique—a true Ninjutsu.
Reading through the entire description, Veigar let out a slow, measured breath.
"This technique… it's practically made for me."
The Human Body Enhancement Technique was a C-rank Ninjutsu that used chakra to reinforce the body. While its base application was already useful, its effects were directly tied to chakra potency—the stronger the chakra, the greater the enhancement.
For an ordinary ninja, this technique would allow them to develop superior physical abilities, perhaps giving them an edge among peers. Takaaki Koshima himself had once leveraged this technique to rise to the rank of Chūnin, but that had been his limit.
For most shinobi, increasing chakra strength wasn't easy, limiting the true potential of this technique.
But for Veigar, who possessed Phenomenal Evil Power, that limitation did not exist. As long as he had enough Life Essence, he could infinitely strengthen his chakra's potency.
In other words, this technique was the perfect match for him.
Perhaps, there was no other Ninjutsu in existence more suited to Veigar than this one.
Gently setting the scroll aside, he reached for the final one.
After reading through its contents, he wasn't particularly thrilled—but he wasn't disappointed either.
After all, he had already obtained a technique that suited him perfectly.
The final scroll detailed a Samurai kenjutsu:
"Ittō-ryū (One-Sword Style): Iai Slash."
This meant that the ninjatō he had inherited finally had a purpose.
Surveying the relics he had received, Veigar carefully placed his perfect-score report card inside the wooden box, followed by the two scrolls, and sealed it once more.
"Don't worry—I'll live well."
"And one day, I will stand at the pinnacle of the ninja world."
This was Veigar's vow to his departed parents—and the goal he had set for himself.
As for why he had re-sealed the scrolls, it was simple: A man with a treasure invites disaster.
The hidden compartment in his room was the safest place he could think of. If a thief ever broke in, losing these treasures would be devastating.
Besides, he could always retrieve them when he was ready to train.
Looking at the layer of dust covering the room, Veigar immediately set about cleaning—sweeping and scrubbing the entire house until deep into the night.
After only a few hours of light sleep, he woke before dawn. Checking his newly acquired ninjatō, then tucking the aged notebook beneath his pillow, he slipped out into the pre-dawn darkness.
After working the morning shift at the slaughterhouse, he took advantage of breakfast time to inform Tomiyasu Saburo that he would be training at home during the day instead of working full-time over the break.
Saburo readily agreed.
During this time, the slaughterhouse owner had grown increasingly fond of Veigar's diligent work ethic. Despite his young age, Veigar never complained—always willing to endure hardship, filth, and exhaustion without hesitation.
As the morning sun illuminated the village, Veigar walked home deep in thought.
He had encountered a problem.
The Life Essence he had been absorbing from the livestock at the slaughterhouse was having a diminishing effect on his chakra enhancement.
Since arriving at the slaughterhouse, his chakra potency had already tripled. While ordinary animals still provided Life Essence, their impact was waning.
This led to a crucial question:
Should he seek out higher-quality sources of Life Essence to further strengthen his chakra?
