Chapter 28 - Ch 28 : The Test Continues

Renji and his teammates stood frozen as the tiger-lion hybrid slowly rose from the dust and debris, its massive form towering over them. Blood dripped from its fanged maw, eyes gleaming with renewed fury. The wounds they had inflicted moments ago were already closing, its regeneration proving far stronger than they had anticipated.

"No way... it's still standing?" Mika Ishida gasped, staggering backward.

Takeshi Mori clenched his fists, his knuckles white. "It's stronger than before. We have to—"

Before he could finish, the beast moved. A blur of fur and muscle, it lunged forward, its monstrous claws ripping through the air with deadly precision. The force of the attack sent Kaito Nakamura crashing against the chamber wall with a sickening crack.

"Kaito!" Yumi Takahashi shouted, her shadowy tendrils lashing out in an attempt to restrain the monster. The beast roared, its sheer strength tearing through the bindings as if they were paper.

The battle reignited with chaotic intensity. Mika fired kinetic blasts at its legs, but the creature barely staggered. Takeshi charged in with brute force, trading blows with the beast, his enhanced strength keeping him in the fight—but only barely. Yumi vanished into the shadows, appearing behind the monster to slice at its tendons with a shadow-forged dagger. The blade bit deep, yet the wound barely fazed the hybrid.

Renji gritted his teeth, his mind racing. Their attacks weren't enough. The monster's speed was on another level, its attacks unpredictable. He needed a new approach.

The hooded figure watched, chuckling softly from the throne. "Not bad... but not enough."

Another swipe, and Mika screamed as claws tore through her side, sending her sprawling across the ground, blood pooling beneath her. Takeshi tried to grab her and retreat, but the beast was relentless, its attention shifting instantly.

It pounced.

Takeshi barely had time to react before its massive jaws clamped down on his arm. The sickening crunch of bone filled the air. Takeshi let out a choked scream as the monster tore his limb away, blood spraying onto the cold stone floor.

"Takeshi!" Yumi and Kaito yelled simultaneously.

"You bastard!" Kaito roared, electricity crackling around his fists as he surged forward. He landed a powerful punch against the monster's face, sending arcs of electricity through its body. The beast snarled, but instead of retreating, it retaliated instantly, slamming its paw into Kaito's chest with bone-shattering force. Kaito was thrown back once more, his body limp as he hit the ground.

Renji felt something snap inside him. This wasn't a battle anymore; this was a massacre. If this continued, none of them would leave this chamber alive. He had to do something drastic.

"Enough!" he bellowed.

The monster paused, blood dripping from its fangs. Renji stepped forward, his body trembling with both exhaustion and determination.

"What are you doing?!" Yumi shouted. "We have to fight together—"

"No." Renji cut her off, his gaze never leaving the beast. "If we keep going like this, you'll all die. I'll handle this alone."

Mika coughed, struggling to sit up. "That's crazy, Renji... you can't—"

"I can." He flexed his fingers, feeling the monstrous energy coiling within him, whispering, urging him to let go of restraint. "Get the others out of here. I'll finish this."

The hooded figure's chuckle deepened. "Interesting. Very interesting."

The tiger-lion hybrid let out a guttural growl, muscles tensing as it prepared to strike once more. Renji inhaled deeply, pushing aside his fear. He had no choice but to embrace what he had become.

Then, he moved.

A burst of monstrous speed sent him straight at the beast, his instincts taking over. Claws extended from his fingers, his senses sharpening as his body adapted to the fight. The creature lunged, its massive paw swiping at him—but this time, Renji dodged with unnatural precision. He twisted midair, slashing across its eye, dark ichor spraying from the wound.

The beast roared in agony, thrashing violently. Renji didn't stop. He drove his claws into its shoulder, using its own momentum to flip onto its back. His fingers found purchase in its thick fur, and with inhuman strength, he drove his mutated arm deep into the beast's spine.

The hybrid shrieked, convulsing. Its body twisted violently in a last-ditch effort to throw him off, but Renji held on, sinking his claws deeper. He could feel its essence pulsing beneath his fingers—the monstrous core fueling its strength. He had one chance.

He reached inside and ripped it out.

A deafening explosion of energy erupted as the beast's core was torn free. The chamber trembled, dust and stone raining from above. The monster let out one final, gurgling growl before its massive body collapsed, lifeless.

Silence fell over the throne room, broken only by the ragged breathing of Renji and his wounded teammates.

The hooded figure clapped slowly. "Magnificent. You truly are something special, Renji Kuroya."

Renji staggered to his feet, his vision swimming. He could feel the corruption spreading deeper within him, his body barely holding together.

"Now..." The hooded figure rose from the throne. "Shall we begin your real test?"

---

Renji's body tensed as he glared at the hooded figure seated on the massive throne. His breath was heavy, his muscles screaming in protest after the grueling battle against the monstrous beast, but his fury overshadowed the exhaustion.

"I've had enough of your damn tests!" Renji growled, his voice carrying through the vast chamber. Without hesitation, he launched himself forward, his feet digging into the stone floor as he propelled himself straight at the figure.

The hooded figure chuckled, a deep, resonant sound that seemed to echo from the very walls of the chamber. "Impatience… an interesting trait for one such as yourself. Very well, come!"

Renji's fist cut through the air like a bullet, his strength enhanced beyond human limits. But as his strike connected, the figure raised a single hand, and a translucent barrier flared to life. The impact sent a shockwave rippling through the room, causing debris to shake loose from the ceiling.

Instead of being repelled, Renji felt something—something strange. His hand tingled, a sensation of raw energy coursing through his veins. His instincts kicked in. He wasn't just attacking; he was absorbing.

The figure jerked back slightly, a subtle shift in posture betraying its surprise. "Oh? How fascinating."

Renji's eyes widened as realization struck. He had absorbed the force of the counterattack, just as he had done with dungeon monsters before. His body instinctively adapted, channeling the energy back into his limbs. Without missing a beat, he surged forward again, throwing a devastating knee toward the figure's midsection.

The figure responded in kind, moving with inhuman speed. A sweeping motion of its arm conjured a spiraling vortex of energy, which lashed out like a whip. Renji barely twisted out of the way in time, feeling the raw force graze his ribs. The mere pressure sent him skidding back several feet, his boots grinding against the stone.

Takeshi, still clutching his wounded shoulder, watched in awe. "What the hell…? Renji's actually going toe-to-toe with that thing."

Mika, her face pale from blood loss, gritted her teeth. "But can he win?"

Renji didn't have time to think about that. He was moving on instinct, reacting faster than his mind could process. Another strike, another exchange—each time, he absorbed a portion of the energy used against him. It wasn't perfect; the figure was still overwhelmingly powerful, but Renji was adapting.

The figure finally paused, lowering its hand. "Enough."

Renji halted mid-charge, his entire body screaming at him to keep fighting. His fingers clenched into fists, his breath ragged.

"You… pass." The hooded figure's voice was even, but there was an unmistakable trace of amusement. "You are unlike the others. Few have faced me and still stood. Fewer still have stolen my power in return."

Renji's eyes burned with intensity. "Who… are you?"

The figure leaned forward slightly, the shadows around its face receding just enough to reveal a glimpse of a sharp, knowing smile. "Now, as promised, I shall tell you…"

The chamber seemed to darken, the very air thick with an ominous presence. Renji and his team braced themselves for whatever revelation was about to come.
