Chapter 7 - ACTS OF THE NIGHT

There is a loud round of applause in the court and it came from one entity.

One clap after the other, the devil's advocate gradually approached the court's centre.

"Your honour", it says, imitating Ansi's voice, "members of the court"

"Oh please, pretty please, do not charge my client because my client is a fool"

"Oh please, pretty please, do not condemn the mortal because he was a fool"

"Oh your honour, even if my client had to sleep inside a lightbulb, he'd fail to be enlightened"

"Bravo", the prosecutor applauded, returning in its original tone, "truly brilliant"

"All of that Butcher of Reason stuff, only to imply that perhaps you ought not to be punished of the charges I've brought forward because you were never smart enough"

"Guilty are the clever ones, innocent are the fools"

"Objection, your honour!", Ansi yelled in defiance, "Panteku is making things up, under my banner"

"That was not what I concluded. These assertions could be misleading to the court, and undermines the validity of my response"

"How so?", Panteku challenged.

Ansi sighed, and gave the walls its attention, "I too am guilty of scoffing off arguments, especially the ones that do not make any sense"

"But that does not change the fact, that ridiculing an opposing argument always simplifies it to the biases one may have to it, which undermines everything else the argument could stand for"

"Should I retract my statement?", Panteku asked with a faint smile as if a thought had just then crossed its head.

"You do not have to", Ansi said, "I was merely reminding everyone that my response was meant to tear apart your analogy, but not to be taken as an outright statement on judgement"

"Alright", handler intervened, "since we haven't reached the end of this trial, I'll keep my comments to myself, however, since we are on the matter, Ansi, is there anything else you'd like to bring forward?"

Ansi gave it some thought, a lot of thought.

Both are acutely aware that the outcome of this trial depended on not just the deeds of the accused but how cautious one is with their words, phrases, and arguments.

"I'd like to decline, your honour", it decided.

"A cosmic trial can never be won through counterarguments alone", handler pointed out.

"At some point, you will have to show us why, Homeless Gregor is deserving of any fruitful rewards"

Ansi bowed its head in respect and silenced down.

"I only have a few more questions for Panteku"

The handler permitted the request by waving its hand at the floor.

"You stated"

"A creature must have sheltered life at some point, and the creature must have been capable of reasoning"

"Is there anything else you'd like to add onto your criteria of cosmic judgement?"

"Ansi", Panteku replied, "I have been generous enough to take lead in this trial"

"Because it is more fulfilling to me that way, but don't push my generosity"

"I will play my cards when I deem it necessary"

"I will complete that criteria when it is just right to"

"Until then let me have my fun"

Ansi nodded and took a step back.

"Homeless Gregor", Panteku said towering over him, "ever heard the phrase, whatever's done in the dark eventually comes to light?"

"…Yes…", was his nervous reply, "I have"

"Has everything you've ever done in the dark ever come to light?"

"Answer me please, I dislike using Cretone"

"No, not everything", he replied.

"Well of course not, but please enlighten us, what are your acts of the night?"

"Acts of the night?"

"Oh dear, I mean your secrets, your personal secrets, confess them to me right now"

"Right…now?"

"Got any other place to go", Panteku mocked, "got anything else to do?"

"Uhm…I do not know what to say", he replied looking despondent.

"You take the lead" and reclined his head beneath the weight of the pressure he was feeling.

Panteku placed a hand on his shoulder as if to comfort the poor man, "relax", it reassured.

"Have more faith in yourself, for I am certain many others will", it advised.

Despite those crocodile words of encouragement, the Homeless man still looked dejected and overwhelmed by the situation.

"I'm sure many others will disagree with my disposition of you", Panteku said smiling, and synced his words with a rub on his shoulder, "So, let's bring them in and find out"

"You have a whole team of cheerleaders", it announced, "awaiting to witness you ascend"

Ansi's eyes widened immediately, as if in shock, "you don't mean?", it exclaimed.

"Yes, I do mean", said Panteku, stepping away from the accused and refacing the façade of the court.

"Your honour", it kindly said, "could you please do me the honour of sending them in"

"Family, friends, every single person he has ever known"

"Send them in"
