Cherreads

Chapter 10 - Finalist

Time: 1:00 AM – Voyager Association Colosseum

The cheers following Aria's electrifying win still echoed when the announcer's voice cut through the rising energy.

"Now entering the field—Lila Butters of Team Kairos versus Nadia Quen from the Eastern Bloom Sect!"

Lila strolled out onto the battlefield with her signature upbeat bounce, cracking her knuckles and rolling her neck. The sun glimmered against her polished light bracers, water droplets already spinning gently around her like curious spirits.

Nadia Quen awaited in the opposite corner, robed in rose-gold silks, her feet bare on the hot stone, her presence calm and poised. She carried a long bamboo staff wrapped in ivy and markings of old-world healing scripts.

Lila raised an eyebrow. "Oh wow, another healer? This might get confusing."

Nadia smiled politely. "Not confusing. Beautiful."

The bell rang.

Nadia moved first, her staff striking the stone and releasing waves of blooming aura.

Vitalis Muti – Verdant Bloom Kata.

Lush plant life surged along the battlefield, vines twirling in harmony to shield and bind. But Lila, fresh from training with Master Elric, had no intention of being outpaced.

Martial Muti – Water Crescent Step!

She dipped low and surged forward, skipping across the wet patches of battlefield like a skipping stone. She closed the gap with surprising speed.

Their first exchange—staff against open palm—sent vibrations through the ground. Lila deflected each hit with minimal movement, using restored energy loops around her arms like flowing armor.

Elemental Muti – Aqua Shell Pulse!

A shimmering dome burst outward from Lila's strike zone, dousing the plants and forcing Nadia to leap back.

Nadia spun her staff above her head—

Vitalis-Elemental Fusion – Blossom Halo Rain!

A storm of petal-shaped water blades rained down, guided by graceful, spiral movements.

Lila planted her feet.

Her aura surged.

Hybrid Form: Vital-Wave Bloom State

The petals hit—but Lila flowed through them, spinning and redirecting each with whip-like water tendrils. Her eyes now glowed with steady resolve.

"This is my field now."

She struck the ground with her foot.

Final Technique: Aqua Blossom Spiral – Vital Bloom Overdrive!

Water erupted in a wide bloom under her. The vines reversed—turning against Nadia's control and spiraling upward in a vortex of healing-turned-havoc.

Lila dashed through the chaos.

One punch to the core.

Soft.

Precise.

But brimming with power.

Nadia dropped.

Victory

The crowd froze.

Then erupted.

"Winner—Lila Butters!"

In the stands, Lalia wiped away a proud tear and clapped like thunder.

Backstage, Aria blinked. "She didn't even use all her aura."

Kai smiled, still resting. "She's come a long way from the healer on the sidelines."

Rin folded his arms, nodding. "She might be the dark horse of this whole tournament."

And Lila? She just waved to the crowd and winked.

"Time to update my fan club banners."

Time: 1:10 AM – Voyager Association Recovery Wing

The roar of the crowd faded behind thick, reinforced walls. In the cool corridors of the recovery wing, the remaining members of Team Kairos gathered—exhausted, aching, but burning with a shared fire.

Kai rested on a reclining bed, a few wires and water tubes still connected to him, his body gradually restoring from the toll of Sage Mode. His bandaged arm flexed slightly as he sat upright, watching a magical projection replay Lila's final move.

"Did she just out-bloom a Bloom Sect disciple?" he murmured.

Rin leaned against the wall nearby, arms folded, his eyes half-lidded but glowing faintly with Viatra residue. "She did. Clean hit. Tactical. Not bad."

Aria, bandaged at the shoulder and resting on a bench beside Kai, nudged him gently with her foot. "You good yet?"

Kai gave a tired smile. "Good enough to watch you all steal the spotlight."

Lila entered the room in a rush, still energized from her victory, hair damp from the vital water mist still trailing her. "Did you guys see me?! I mean—boom, spin, punch! I was amazing!"

Kai chuckled softly.

Aria rolled her eyes, smirking. "You were decent."

Lila grinned. "You're just mad I did it without blowing up the sky."

Rin finally spoke, his tone quiet. "You've all grown. Fast."

The room fell into a brief silence.

Kai looked at Rin. "You okay?"

Rin stared at the ceiling. "That Viatra power… it's evolving faster than I expected. But each time it awakens, I feel like something's… slipping."

Aria turned serious. "You're not losing yourself, Rin. You're sharpening. There's a difference."

Lila sat down beside him. "And if you start slipping, we'll be the ones to catch you. Like a cool trust fall—but with explosions and possibly soul damage."

Everyone chuckled.

A knock echoed at the doorway.

William stepped in, arms crossed, grinning wide. "Well, look at this bunch of half-dead miracles."

He tossed a sealed envelope and a cloth pouch onto the table.

"Here's the match order for the finals—later tonight. And some well-earned recognition."

Lila raised an eyebrow. "Finals are tonight?"

William nodded. "You'll rest up, then take the stage under the stars. The Natural Embrace may be over, but the fire's just getting started."

He gestured to the pouch. "Those are Contender Medallions. Elric had them made. Everyone who fought in the semifinals gets one. Not official rank—but the Association sees you. You're above the rest."

Rin picked up one of the medallions, its silver-etched surface gleaming with the Voyager sigil. "Recognition for pain well-earned."

William added, "And for you finalists? You're officially Bronze Seekers now. No debate. You made it through a trial most never survive."

Aria's eyes widened. "Just like that?"

William shrugged. "Promotion by fire. Earned through scars."

Everyone beamed—except Kai.

He smiled faintly, but his hands were clenched beneath the sheets.

He said nothing.

But his thoughts raced.

They got medals. She got promoted. And I…

He looked down at his hands—still trembling from overusing Sage Mode.

I lost.

The others continued to talk, laugh, celebrate.

Kai nodded at the right moments. Responded when spoken to.

But inside, a storm was building.

Time: 2:20 AM – Voyager Association Colosseum Grounds

The hall was quiet. The lights in the main colosseum dimmed as the stadium prepared for final repairs and preparations for the final matches later that night. Cheers had faded. The stage had cleared. And every contestant, save one, had stood on the grand podium.

Every contestant… except Kai.

He limped slowly through the outer garden path, avoiding the central celebration area. Each step burned through sore muscles and aura-torn ligaments. Bandages still wrapped his arms and ribs. A cane leaned against his side—not because he needed it, but because it made people less likely to stop him.

His breath was steady.

But his mind? A riot.

I trained every day. Ten thousand strikes. Every. Single. Day.

I studied the elders. I mastered every technique I saw. I invented one of the rarest Muti paths in existence.

And I still lost.

Images flashed through his mind—lightning dancing across his skin, his fists shattering illusions, the crowd roaring his name. Then… the final moment. Aria's palm striking his chest. The flash. The collapse.

He stopped under a cracked stone archway, overlooking the quiet moonlit field where their opening ceremony had taken place.

He wanted to scream.

But all he could do was breathe.

Then—footsteps.

Soft. Heavy. Measured.

Kai didn't need to look up.

"I figured you'd be here," Master Elric said.

Kai didn't respond.

Elric came to stand beside him, hands in his coat pockets, eyes fixed on the moon.

"They gave you the best spot on the podium," he said. "Even left your medallion in the center."

Still, Kai said nothing.

Elric waited. Then sighed.

"You know," he said, "the first time I entered the Association's trials, I was knocked out in round one."

Kai blinked.

"Got my ribs broken. Spent three weeks in a recovery ward. Everyone else was celebrating. I sat there staring at the ceiling, convinced I was cursed. That maybe I'd never be strong enough."

Kai finally glanced at him. "But you're Master Elric."

Elric laughed. "Not back then. Back then I was 'that idiot who tried to punch a teleporter in the face.'"

Kai didn't smile. Yet.

"I trained harder than anyone," Kai said quietly. "I did everything right."

"I know," Elric replied. "That's why you're in pain."

They stood in silence.

The wind rustled the leaves.

"You think this is your story's ending?" Elric asked.

Kai frowned. "It sure feels like it."

Elric turned to him.

"You're wrong. It's your beginning."

Kai met his gaze.

"You're not defined by your wins, Kai. You're defined by how you rise after the loss. And this? This was your fall. Every great Seeker has one."

Kai looked back at the field.

"They all looked so proud up there."

"They are," Elric said. "Proud of you too."

"I couldn't face them."

"They don't need you to," Elric replied. "They already know what kind of person you are. They're just waiting for you to remember."

Kai's grip tightened on the cane.

Elric nudged him.

"Also, William cried during your match. Real tears. Said he had dust in his eyes, but I saw him dab with a silk handkerchief. Fancy stuff."

Kai huffed.

"Lila might still be screaming about her bloom attack," Elric added. "She's decided she wants statues made."

Kai cracked the faintest smile.

"You're allowed to feel angry," Elric said. "You're allowed to grieve the loss. But don't stay in it. Because you haven't lost your future. Not by a long shot."

Kai exhaled slowly. "I just wanted to be enough."

"You are," Elric said firmly. "And the fact that you're still standing after everything? That means you're ready for what comes next."

They stood a while longer.

The moon began to lower in the horizon.

Finally, Kai turned to him. "Thank you."

Elric smiled. "Don't thank me. Earn it."

Kai nodded. Limped forward. Stronger.

The storm in his chest wasn't gone.

But it had found direction.

Time: 3:00 AM – Contestant Lounge

The room was dim, lit only by soft crystals on the walls. The rest of Team Kairos was still gathered—Rin leaning against the window, Aria icing her shoulder, Lila snoring on a long couch with her hair half-dried in a tangled bun.

The door creaked.

All eyes turned.

Kai stepped inside, silent, steady.

Rin raised an eyebrow. "Took you long enough."

Lila woke up with a snort. "Huh—did we win something again?"

Aria blinked, surprised for only a second, then smiled softly.

"You okay?" she asked.

Kai didn't answer at first.

He just walked to the seat beside them, dropped into it, and let out a long exhale.

"I will be."

Silence stretched a moment.

Then Lila threw a pillow at him.

"Welcome back, broody warrior monk."

Kai caught it without looking.

His smile returned, faint but real.

"I missed you too."

They didn't need to say more.

They were together.

The storm was passing.

Time: 3:20 AM – Contestant Lounge

Team Kairos lingered in the soft quiet of the lounge, bodies sore, but spirits whole. Lila had sprawled back across the couch with one leg hanging off the side. Rin, still half-shadowed by the soft lighting, stared out the crystal-paned window. Aria leaned her head back, her eyes barely open, letting silence be her peace.

Kai sat with them now. Steady. Present.

The door opened again.

William strolled in, hands in his coat pockets, grin wide as ever—but his eyes, sharp and perceptive, caught the shift in the room instantly. He paused for a beat, then looked over his shoulder. "Elric says thanks," he said casually. "For talking to Kai. I'd say the same—some falls you don't climb out of without someone who's been there before." He nodded once toward Kai. "Good. You're here."

Kai gave a slight nod.

William walked further in and clapped his hands. "First things first—thank you."

They all blinked.

He gestured toward the group, but his gaze held on Aria and Rin. "For sticking with him. Losing hurts. But silence after a loss? That hurts more. You didn't let him stay there."

Kai looked down, quiet again—but this time, not drowning.

"Also," William added, "you might want to stay sharp. We're getting a visitor for the finals."

Rin raised an eyebrow. "Who?"

William's smile widened.

"Johnny Joah."

The name dropped like a stone.

Lila sat up instantly. "Wait—the Johnny Joah? The one who can split mountains with pressure points?"

William nodded. "President of Janoah. Grand Seeker. One of only two people to fight Master Elric and win."

Kai's fingers curled slightly around the edge of his seat.

Aria blinked slowly. "Why's he coming?"

William leaned back against the wall, crossing his arms. "Because the finals of this tournament aren't just tradition anymore. With the Red Order stirring in Dune City, and new lands drawing rising interest from explorers—this year's rookies might be the last generation raised in peacetime."

His voice lowered.

"The world's changing. Fast. And Johnny Joah wants to see who's going to inherit the fire."

The team looked around at each other.

They weren't just fighting for pride anymore.

They were standing on the edge of something greater.

And somewhere in the distance… morning began to bloom.

The stadium lights pulsed as the crowd gathered once more, their cheers returning like a tide.

A golden projection formed above the arena—an ethereal screen crafted from light and aura.

Master Elric himself appeared at the center platform, flanked by his top students.

He raised his hand, and the crowd fell into reverent silence.

"It is with great pride," he began, "that we now reveal your finalists. These six have endured pain, trial, and the weight of their own limitations to arrive here. Some bled. Some broke. All rose."

The names flared across the projection, each greeted by massive applause:

• Aria Flamehart – The Storm's Edge

• Rin Kairo – The Omen Eye of Chun

• Lila Butters – The Blooming Wave

• Dante Vireo – The Last Counter

• Solene "The Zenith" Ivaris – Master of Radiance

• Omar "Scorchblade" Hakim – The Living Inferno

"Tonight," Elric said, voice steady and proud, "you will witness the future. Six warriors. Three matches. And one truth: that legends aren't born—they're forged."

The crowd erupted into a storm of sound and light.

And in the lounge above, the six names began preparing for what would be the battle of their lives.

Time: 4:15 AM – Final Match Preparation Chambers

The finalists were given their own chambers beneath the colosseum—private sanctuaries lined with echo-resistant stone and glowing Muti runes to soothe lingering battle strain. Each room was shaped like a circle, meant to mimic the philosophy of flow: there were no corners to hide from yourself in here.

In one chamber, Aria stood before a circular mirror. Her hands were steady. The burn mark across her collarbone from the last fight shimmered faintly with residual energy. She clenched her fist and whispered under her breath, "No holding back."

In another, Rin sat cross-legged on the floor, eyes closed, Viatra flickering between phases. Faint tendrils of shadow and gravity curled along his arms as he slowed his breath. "I won't lose focus. Not now."

Lila splashed cold water on her face in her chamber, then stared at her reflection. "Let's go, girl. Time to make Bloom history." She burst into laughter halfway through the sentence, wiped her face, and grinned. "Statues. I'm getting statues."

Kai, seated in silence, stared at his open palms. The bruises were gone, the pain was mostly dulled—but his spirit still bore the weight of his loss. Then he inhaled.

Long. Slow. Grounded.

"Sage Mode… Zen Resurgence… and everything I've learned… It's not over."
