Chapter 14 - CHAPTER 14

Shen He had limited knowledge about Violet. His familiarity stemmed mainly from the original animation, which chronicled Violet's life post-war, showcasing her mesmerizing beauty and profound emotional journey. Information about her earlier years was scarce, primarily sourced from brief mentions in various encyclopedias. It was noted that due to her exceptional combat abilities and her machine-like obedience to orders, she was often utilized as a weapon. However...

"Even if considered a weapon, didn't those people understand the importance of proper care?" Shen He's voice trembled with suppressed anger.

Upon removing the tattered remnants of what could scarcely be called clothing, he was confronted with a body marred by numerous injuries. Cuts, bruises, and even bullet wounds were evident. Most appeared to be battle scars, with dirt and grime embedded deep within, and some still oozing fresh blood. Without her resilient constitution, such untreated wounds could have easily led to fatal infections. It seemed as though her handlers not only sought to exploit her lethal skills but also harbored a fear of her capabilities, perhaps even desiring her demise on the battlefield.

"Can you speak?" Shen He gently inquired while meticulously cleaning her wounds with warm water and a soft cloth.

There was no response. Violet's large, blue eyes remained fixed on him, unblinking.

"Violet... that's your name. A beautiful name. Someday, you'll grow into a woman as beautiful as its meaning. Do you know what it signifies to have a name? It means you're not just a weapon or a tool anymore... What am I even saying?"

Shen He chuckled ruefully at his own musings.

Violet's gaze never wavered from Shen He's face. Even as warm water trickled into her eyes, she didn't blink. She listened intently to Shen He's words, though their meaning eluded her. Something stirred within her mind, prompting her to slowly part her lips and utter, "Master."

Shen He's hands froze mid-motion.

He felt an inexplicable joy hearing her speak for the first time.

"What else can you say?"

Shen He resumed his gentle ministrations.

"Master."

"Is that all? Can you say your own name, Violet?"

"Master."

"No, not that. Repeat after me: Violet."

Shen He, surprised by his own patience, continued his attempts. However, regardless of his prompts, Violet only repeated the word "Master," as if trying to engrain it into her memory.

After an hour of careful bathing, Shen He finally stepped back to admire his work. Wrapped in a soft towel, Violet's silky blonde hair cascaded smoothly, and despite the lingering scars and bruises on her pale skin, a healthy glow began to emerge. Her clear, sapphire-like eyes added to her innocent charm.

She was irresistibly adorable.

"You must be hungry."

Shen He retrieved a slice of strawberry cake from the refrigerator and offered it to Violet.

Her delicate nose twitched, reminiscent of a curious kitten. She tentatively pinched a small piece between her fingers and placed it in her mouth. The sudden burst of sweetness made her eyes widen in surprise. After a quick glance at Shen He for reassurance, she eagerly devoured the rest, burying her face into the dessert with unabashed enthusiasm.

"Easy there..."

Shen He patted her back, a mix of amusement and affection in his eyes.

Was he caring for a young girl or a newfound pet?

Regardless, her cuteness was undeniable.

After ensuring the bedding was comfortable for the resting Shiki, Shen He activated a virtual screen via Jarvis to browse the internet, seeking potential income sources. While low-level summons provided some funds, they barely covered daily expenses, let alone the costs of establishing a base or expanding operations.

After a brief search, Shen He sighed in resignation.

This world mirrored the Marvel Cinematic Universe, specifically the Avengers timeline. Spider-Man had yet to make his debut, rendering entities like Oscorp nonexistent. The Lizard, Dr. Curt Connors, would emerge only after Spider-Man's appearance, making that avenue currently irrelevant.

Engaging in underworld activities was an option, but considering Saiki's disposition...

"I have no objections."

"—!"

Shen He jolted in surprise, turning swiftly.

Both Saiki Kusuo and Agent Coulson stood in the room.

"When did you arrive?"

"We've been here for a short while. You seemed quite engrossed." Coulson's gaze shifted to the virtual screen displaying various shopping items. "Children's educational books, etiquette manuals, plush toys... Mr. Shen, is this your daughter?"

"Uh, no."

Shen He hastily closed the shopping tabs, a hint of embarrassment coloring his cheeks.

After explaining Violet and Shiki's situations, he gently wiped cake crumbs from Violet's face, using a napkin, and turned to Coulson. "Director Fury sent you, didn't he? Seeking assistance? I'll help where I can, but you know I can't divulge too much about future events."

How did Violet manage to get cake on her eyelashes?

"Actually, our director isn't entirely convinced about future predictions. My visit today is to request your assistance." Coulson's demeanor remained professional. "We've identified potential internal issues within S.H.I.E.L.D., possibly linked to Hydra. We're in dire need of trustworthy operatives to investigate these leads. Of course, your cooperation would be met with appropriate compensation."

"Compensation?" Shen He's interest was piqued. "What kind of compensation are we discussing?"

Coulson produced a tablet from his briefcase, presenting it to Shen He. Displayed was the profile of an elderly Chinese businessman, accompanied by detailed information.

"This gentleman is a prominent figure in the Chinese community here. He has no biological children, only an adopted son. Recently diagnosed with a terminal illness, he's expressed a desire to bequeath his substantial assets to his relatives in China. Mr. Shen, this identity was initially crafted by S.H.I.E.L.D. for internal use. We're prepared to offer it to you, contingent upon your collaboration. Naturally
