Chapter 40 - Nelly

My eyes fluttered open, slow and reluctant. For a moment, I was suspended in that weightless space between dreams and memory—until the ache in my body reminded me just how real last night was.

I turned over, instinctively reaching for him.

Empty.

My heart kicked. I blinked a few more times and peeled my eyes open just enough to scan the room.

There he was.

Aiden.

Standing in the center of the sun-drenched bedroom, towel wrapped low around his waist, another in hand as he ruffled it through his damp hair. The sunlight poured in from the tall glass doors, outlining his body like a god carved in light.

I think I stop breathing

He wasn't just beautiful—he was devastating. That strong V shape of his torso disappeared beneath the white towel, and I had to physically restrain my eyes from lingering. How had this man—this man—been wrapped around me last night? How had I survived it?

As he turned slightly, I panicked and shut my eyes again, pretending to be asleep.

Footsteps.
