Chapter 5 - The Dinner Game

The grand hall of Prince Azula Palace shone with gleaming chandeliers, each candle casting a gentle golden light over the long noble table where high guests sipped and set aside their invitations with august ease. Tonight's dinner was more than just a feast—it was a game. A guessing game that mixes wit with allure and sort of at the same time lets a bit of fate decide. Tonight Prince Ardyn is putting a big test to the whole group of contestants, and no one has a clue what's going on.

The women spent the whole evening perfecting their brightest and most radiant smiles, their poise too while they practiced some of their classiest talk topics. But little did they know, the true challenge would come not from their words but from the very meal before them. The guests took their seats, the air thick with anticipation. Seraphine had been perfecting the art of making herself the center of attention right from the start. She gracefully leaned forward, her voice sweet as honey,

"My prince, do you know the most exquisite taste in Azula? It's not the wine but the good souls that pour into cellars but it's not just the honey cakes but the sweet faces of folks that trip my trigger. Truly, the company here tonight is unlike any other."

With a sudden jerk of his gaze away from the goblet that had been resting idly in his hand, the prince snapped back into real focus again.

"Yes, Lady Seraphine, the company is... truly. He shot her a quick glance but quickly turned his attention to others unwilling to be distracted.

Kaelith, ever observant and Calculating, tilted her head slightly. "Remarkable? it's only remarkable if one knows how to keep the conversation flowing,". She said, her voice sharp but playful."it's easy to say pleasant things, but let's see who can say something truly meaningful, that would be remarkable.

Elira sitting near the end of the table fiddled nervously with her napkin, her heart wasn't in the grand gestures of politeness all the beauty of the events. Her mind was focused elsewhere forecast on the task at hand. She wasn't there for the glitter or the charm, she was there because she needed answers and she knew tonight was her chance.

Prince Ardyn cleared his throat. "the first challenge tonight is simple, ladies, during dinner you must eat pick a dish and explain to the rest of us why it represents you well."

The silence that followed could have been cut with a knife. All eyes turned towards the prince who was trying with an effort to stiffle a grin. This was going to be more amusing than he had originally thought.

"I see you are all deep in thought, "Ardyn said, his voice laced with amusement. "Don't worry, it's not as difficult as it sounds, just choose wisely, though. A poor choice may say more about you than you realize."

The women exchanged glances, Seraphine who never had to back down from a challenge, picked up her fork and smiled sweetly, "I will begin." She gestured to the platter of roasted duck before her. "This,"

she said, cutting a delicate piece of the meat, "represents me. Like the duck, I am graceful and poised, yet capable of striking when the moment calls for it. The golden glaze on the skin is the image I present to the world, smooth and flawless ."

Elira rolled her eyes, though she quickly covered it with a cough, she wasn't buying it.

"That's a bold choice," Kaelith said, raising an eyebrow. "But I imagine your feathers are made of gold too."

Seraphine shot her a mock-glare, but didn't respond. The game had only just begun, and she intended to win.

Kaelith, never one to be outdone, picked up her plate with a small smirk. "I choose the Lamb," she said spearing a piece with her fork . " Tender, yet resilient. I have fought many battles in my life, but it's the quiet strength that gets me through. The lamb represents what I have to endure to achieve my goals ." She paused and smiled

" and its simple like me, not everyone needs to stand out to be significant."

Finally, it was Elira's turn. She hesitated biting her lip as she glanced down at her plate. Her fingers ran over the edge of the bowl of soup. "I will pick the soup," she said, her voice steady, though her hands were shaking ever so slightly ."It's simple, warm and comforting. It's a dish I've had countless times, shared with family, with people who understand the value of kindness and simplicity. It represents me, because in a world so unpredictable as ours, and full of pretension and games, I've learned that being and staying true to yourself is all that matters."

The table was quiet for a moment before Seraphine broke the silence with a soft and almost sarcastic laugh.

" how quaint, a humble soup for a Humble girl. I suppose next you'll say you are a simple country girl who just wants to settle down and tend to a garden."

Elira's cheeks flushed but she didn't flinch. " if that's what it takes be happy then yes, I suppose I would." Her gaze met the prince's, her eyes fierce yet filled with an honesty that made him pause.

Ardyn leaned back in his chair a small smile at the corners of his lips. Women were so different, each one playing their parts in this twisted game. Yet somehow they all intrigued him.

" Well ladies," he said, his voice smooth but filled with underlying tension. "It seems we have our answers. you have all given us much to think about. But now it's time for something a little more... interesting." He gestured towards the dessert, where a large covered dish had just been placed before him. "Tonight's dessert will reveal something more than just your taste in sweets."

The women exchanged puzzled glances, with their curiosity and tensions raised.

Prince Ardyn lifted the lid from the dessert dish, revealing a cake shaped like a crown, and adorned with shimmering sugar jewels and coatings.

"Here's the catch," he said, eyeing them all carefully. " each of you must eat a piece of this cake but there's something inside it, hidden beneath the layers. A small token the one who finds it," he paused while observing the alacrity, and curiosity in their eyes. Then resumed

"will be granted a private audience with me tomorrow"

Filled with enthusiasm the women's stared at the cake to do or make of the Prince's game. But Elira had a gut feeling, she wasn't just here for a crown, she interested in the Politics of the palace she was here for something else, more precisely as a learner devoid of royal ambition.

Seraphine quick as ever, grabbed a fork and stabbed into the cake." let's see what's inside then".

Kaelith, not one to rush, took a more deliberate approach, using her spoon to carefully peel back the layers. She wasn't about to let anyone get ahead of her.

Elira however hesitated there was something about this whole game that didn't sit right with her, but she knew she had no choice but to play along, at least for now.

So it was that the game was beginning to take another turn. From the high expectations they all had on arrival, to an absolutely imaginable game, set as a test, and the suspense of still not knowing what was coming next, it seemed they they had all signed up for an adventure.
