We walked in silence back to the inn. I patted my breast pocket nervously. I wasn't happy to have to carry the vial, but I was the obvious choice. I wouldn't let Rowan do it, and I sure as hell wouldn't let Anna.
Which left me.
"Did I see that right, sir?" Rowan asked, breaking the silence.
"I believe so. I didn't think it possible."
"A thousand years of study probably reveals some startling things." He observed. "Still, that was quite the thing to see. A mortal soul returned to her body. Did you see how he did it?"
I shook my head. "No, and I didn't understand the incantation at all."
"It was from the old empire," Anna said, her eyes flashing back to blue. "Gurada says that he spoke the old imperial language, though he won't tell me what he meant."
My eyes dropped to the spider, who gleamed in the late afternoon light.
The silence returned.
