Morning at the front of the Arcane Spire felt like an ocean without a shore.
Hundreds of candidates gathered at the base of the main tower, crowding around a giant announcement board that had just appeared behind a curtain of magic. The air was still cold, but the pushing bodies and noisy chatter made it feel hot like a marketplace.
Ezric and I stood a few steps behind the crowd.
"These people are way too excited to see their own names," Ezric muttered, trying to sound casual. "Want me to use my sharp little elbows to make a path?"
"Not a bad idea," I replied.
We moved slowly. Ezric slipped through the crowd more easily, his small frame and agile movements helping as always. I had to hold myself back from stabbing someone with my fake tail thanks to the shoves from behind. The spell had worn off—only lasting a day—so I was back to wearing fake ears and a tail again.
