Chapter 11 - Iced Fire

"How did you climb up this time around?"

"I just did"

His Highness nodded "Hmm. What is the need of being an Ecnes, a known one at that, if you have to keep using the windows?" He moved over to the balcony and took a look down, the wind that greeted him from below, said a lot about the height, and yet, this Ecnes 'just did' it.

Elmah straightened himself, and stood upright, the sleeves of his clothing dangling in the wind. His Highness turned his gaze back at him and thought out loud "With how you're dressed up, anyone that sees you and let's you pass, might just be a criminal of the whole Kingdom. Matter of fact, to not apprehend you as a criminal would be a crime."

Elmah took a look at what he was wearing, swaying from side to side, to be sure it was still the same attire he had left on with, because last time he checked, he really did look okay, at least for what he had to go do. "What is wrong with the way I am dressed up?"

His Highness blinked in amazement " No one saw you leave in that?"

Elmah shook his head innocently, he had left not too long ago, who would have seen him? even the maids, were all asleep, and even if they weren't, no one stayed on the balcony that late.

"Surely no one saw you. You would have caused an uproar looking like you have a personal quarry with the King, or do you have one with me?"

Elmah's mouth curled, as his eyes had the passion of a deep sleepwalker.

"Hmm. Don't take it too personally." His Highness said to console him.

Not that he needed any consoling, he was already used to His Highness's figures of speech. And he was yet to complain.

Turning his gaze away from Elmah, and setting it upon the view, the balcony provided. A view of the large city of Omah, named after the King in the days of his conquest, being the city he tore out of the hands of the Mad King. It looked peaceful now, and prosperous, with golden lights all over, running straight and wide, even to the doors of the Temple of Dorom that could also be seen from this view, even though it looked like a tiny fist. The constant moon light that shone over Izz, made every night like this night, a night, were moon lights made the little golden lights over the city, more sight appealing.

Even the wild forest looked like green gardens from the view. To think this whole land, was once tickling with blood, and conspiracies. And now it held the throne room and was under absolute rule.

He recalled what he'd been taught that morning. "You can't lead without being an inspiration to others. You don't need to be understood, for your power to be felt. To be King, is to be alone" Mother really made sure he had a lot to think about, despite having to deal with History classes. And his mind purposely avoided The King and his own matters.

Looking into his eyes as they seemed to gaze into the distance as if looking at something far away, and at the same time, seeming deep, as if looking into an abyss of intertwined abysses, Elmah wondered how one so young, could have such looks in his eyes. The more he looked at it, the more he admired it, and wanted to do all he can, to share the burden of this his master.

His Highness took a deep sigh as he came back to earth. And a thought struck him. In the instant, he turned to Elmah who was standing unmoved by the wind. "Why are you here?"

Elmah remained still, and for two reasons. One; that was his usual and normal response to things, especially when he still had his thoughts, and two; that question made no sense. Where was he to be before?

"On this balcony" His Highness added.

Elmah's eyes sparkled with understanding as he finally got where the question was coming from. "Well, it is the only way to my chambers, your Highness"

"You sleep in an opposite chamber Elmah, literally separated by a corridor "

"It doesn't change anything"

"Were you going to take the roof?"

"Of course, over the roof and slide in through my window "

"So I was going to have you, over my roof?"

"Technically, it's the King's"

His Highness' eyes flickered with a dull, lifeless intensity. "I sleep in it"

"I know that"

"You're doing this intentionally, right?"

Elmah cleared his throat. "I thought his Highness was expecting me?"

Well, as much as that looked like the case, it wasn't completely so.

He came out the balcony to process, not to expect him, only noticing his presence when he had gotten close. He knew he had a mission to complete today, but, he wasn't expecting him to take the balcony, when he could just have walked through the gates. On second thoughts, that might have been a bad idea, cause if he was a guard standing guard at any entrance this one came in through looking this dark, he would have daggered him first, then asked questions later.

But to go through the roof, to his room, was no easy feat. Seemed somethings really were for the Ecnes to work out.

He took a deep sigh.

"Well I'm off to sleep" he said, as he began walking towards his chambers. "I'll be needing it for tomorrow" before entering he turned to ask "How are your eyes?"

Elmah smirked, his eyes carrying a hint of excitement "His Highness would find out by the tomorrow"

His Highness smiled as he nodded. "Indeed"

He continued his walk in gentle strides as he headed for his bed, all the while his hands never left his back, staying gallantly crossed. In his eyes also could be found a bubbling excitement. Hopefully, tomorrow would give a surprise.
